Speaking as an Elehani shipper, Chidi’s criticism of his relationship “I’m too boring for her,” is pretty dead-on for why I’m meh on the ship.
I mean, it’s fine, it’s obviously endgame, and it makes 90% of the fans happy. But I prefer Eleanor with Tahani because they do have that tension and challenge and excitement. They complement each other while still having to work for it, whereas Cheleanor (esp in this episode) is too Hallmark for me. Too much sweet.
5
u/ChipmunkNamMoi Jan 18 '20 edited Jan 18 '20
I feel the same way about Cheleanor. I loved them in Season 1, they were the couple I was rooting for, but after that it felt forced. Like they were designated to be together when the only season they felt organic was season 1.
Maybe because Eleanor's forced "You have to love me because we were in love in one reboot!" in Season 3 left a bad taste in my mouth, but I've soured on their scenes. They have some good moments, like reboot 119 and the memories Michael shows them, but aside from that I'm just bored of their romance. The couple has potential, but I personally don't like the execution.
5
u/WandersFar Jan 18 '20
Exactly.
I was into it in S1, there was tension and uncertainty, but in later seasons it’s just felt like a foregone conclusion so their scenes bore me, frankly.
Plus they’ve turned into the Ross & Rachel of the series. Practically every season has ended in a “Will they or won’t they?” Meh. Hard pass.
The relationships I think work best are the ones that are rooted in strong, unlikely contrasts.
“Angel” and “Demon” (Janet & Michael)
“Genius” and “Dumbash” (Chidi & Jason)
“High Society” and “Arizona Trashbag” (Tahani & Eleanor)
Because they’re so fundamentally opposite, there will always be some tension there, and that’s the challenge the characters need to move beyond their archetypes and grow into more interesting people.
With Chidi & Eleanor, the tension was largely external. Oh no, she doesn’t belong here, we have to keep her hidden and teach her ethics. But once that threat was revealed to be a lie, and Eleanor actually began to enjoy learning philosophy… where is the tension? On Chidi’s end, his struggle has always been his indecision, which has been totally done away with now. They’ve become so much like each other that there’s nowhere for the drama to go.
3
u/ChipmunkNamMoi Jan 18 '20
I'd also throw in Michael and Eleanor as best friend soulmates. Their bond is more interesting to me because while they are similar in personality, they have an unlikely friendship--ones a demon charged with torturing the other, the others constantly thwarting and challenging the demon. And their relationship has continued to have these weird ups and downs where they recognize the flaws in each other that helps get them through their issues.
Chidi and Eleanor kind of had that in season 1, when their personalities and differences were more stark, but its getting boring in the later seasons.
Also, it's really really forked up that Eleanor basically coerces him into a relationship when they are Janet's. "Say you love me or Janet's void will collapse!" That's not cute it's manipulative. The whole subplot could've been handled so much better.
19
u/Redd2d Jan 17 '20
Maybe if it developed earlier on. The hints weren't enough to actually build a foundation for them, if they do it now just anti fan service, and some people might view it as pandering.
5
u/lookoutnorthamerica Jan 17 '20
Knowing how the show seems to be actually willing to surprise us, I would absolutely LOVE Schur if he decides to end Chidi and Eleanor as friends (even though that definitely wouldn't happen)
80
u/daynewmah Jan 17 '20
Performative Wokeness Department. Love it.
36
u/WandersFar Jan 17 '20
I think this was the most underrated joke of the episode.
I really appreciate the writers throwing that in, too. Like this season has been particularly heavy on the SJW bandwagon, I’m glad they’re pointing out that virtue signalling and self-aggrandizing of all kinds is a total Bad Place move.
It reminds me of the pilot, where being vegan earns you some points, but more importantly shutting up about it unless specifically asked earns you even more points than being vegan in the first place.
13
3
u/Jealous_Water Jan 23 '20
Yesss. I came here looking for this comment specifically! I can’t believe I had to scroll this far to see it. Best joke in the series in while.
“C’mon buddy! I personally chose you based on your innovative work in the Performative Wokeness Department.”
“Wow. Way to mansplain my own department to me. Aaaand I’m triggered.”

u/WandersFar Jan 17 '20
Whoa, whoa, whoa, wasn’t Vicky gooified? Am I remembering that wrong?

u/overchargext Jan 17 '20
I think Michael said the demon regeneration process takes a few months. It's probably been long enough by now.

Michael: Pushing the rock up the hill gave me purpose. Who am I if the rock’s gone?
Tahani: Ironically, that’s exactly what Vin Diesel asked me when Dwayne Johnson refused to appear in The Fast and the Furious 9.
Michael: ...
Tahani: Not helpful? Copy that.
387
u/RonSpawnsonTP Jan 17 '20
I burst out laughing at that one, the timing was spot on
304
u/Shiny_and_ChromeOS Jan 17 '20
Not just the timing, but her furtive side-eye glances right after. Jameela's physical comedy is brilliant, considering she'd never acted before this show.
276
u/poisoneyevory Jan 17 '20
Michael's "Who am I if the rock's gone?" was vaguely reminiscent of Shawn's "Who are we without twisting?"
Both of them were holding on to something they loved and were upset at the thought of losing it.
Then I started thinking about losing TGP and now I'm sad :(
23
u/TheSpongetastic Jan 17 '20
This was funny but I can't help but feel it doesn't make sense. Tahani died well before Fast and Furious 9 would have been in production.
I know it's a joke and obviously it's a fictional character talking about fictional events, just feels forced.
48
Jan 17 '20 edited Jan 17 '20
Maybe that happened during her time on Earth in s3? The Rock stated he was unsure he'll appear in F&F9 back in April 2018, and season 3 happened in October of that year.

Michael:
Pushing the rock up the hill gave me purpose. Who am I if the rock’s gone?
A lot of people are left with that question upon retirement or job loss. They have to find new meaning in their lives after the thing they felt gave them purpose is no longer there.

u/TheNerdChaplain Jan 17 '20 edited Jan 18 '20
They really leaned hard on that joke this episode, but it worked out.
Plus, I think it would have been really easy to make Vicky in control of the project Michael's Bad Place, but they didn't go that route.
Jason was uncharacteristically smart this episode, but I don't care. When Chidi said that he only needed that to be true to stay with Janet, I shouted "Oh, fuck you, Chidi!" I admit I got played.
Now I just want to know why happens to Shawn. Is he over Vicky, or what is he going to do? His ick reaction to working together was gold.
Also, Bad Janet calling the black guy Skin Check was way edgier than I expected. More so than "blowing beefeaters" from Trevor in S3. (Edit: she said skin tags, not skin check.)

u/lostleader Jan 17 '20
Jason has always been good with interpersonal relationships, so I don't think it was uncharacteristic, he just sounded slightly smarter.

I don't think it's so much a "secret" genius as having a different area of genius. He's good with emotions: understanding them, understanding why people have them, understanding how to make a bad emotion a good emotion. He's done the "getting the gist of the situation and boiling it all down into easily understood, emotion-fueled fundamentals" thing more than once.
Also -- Romeo and Juliet? Very emotions-focused story. It fits.

It does seem fishy, but also this show hasn't made residents of The Good Place seem fun. It may be boring, annoying, unnerving or something like that. Or just what's the point if there aren't any challenges. Like Shawn being bored with his butthole spiders after feeling content intially.

So next weeks episode recap on Comcast is basically describing the plot of The Good Place, which I've totally seen happen before except the next one says "Various conversations occur, between various groups of people.". Which makes me wonder if the shows description also works for next episode.
The full thing says: "When Eleanor Shellstrop finds herself in the afterlife, shes both relieved and surprised that shes made it into the Good Place. But it doesnt take long for Eleanor to realize shes there by mistake -- and she'll have to change her ways to stay"
Which at first kinda made me wonder if she'll (and possibly the whole group) just feel like The Good Place is too perfect and be bored and realize if they're going to stay they need to find a purpose or something. But then I realized that them getting into "The Good Place" without taking a test was to throw them off that they were starting their own test. Especially because they made a point this episode to point out that the humans wont know they're taking a test and since our 4 helped create the system that's pretty hard to do without mind wiping them. So the description might be a hint that were getting a throw back to the original point. And maybe that was Michael's new thing, making the OG 4's test.

Mama was a high school teacher. She loved Baz Luhrmann’s film of R+J because it gave a new, fun way to teach Shakespeare. She liked to use it as a reward - cap off the unit on R+J by watching the new film, after starting it with the old Zafarelli men in tights stage play (Not my favourite strategy, but ... you do you Ma.)
Not all of the kids she taught were destined for great things. As Terry Pratchett would describe it in a Susan book, she had some Jasons. (Not TGP Jason. A different, but also similar Jason.) This particular Jason asked her halfway through the film “When are they gonna get on the big boat Miss?”
“Sorry... what?”
“You know. The big boat wot sinks.”
“.... UM. We’ve been studying this play for about 5 weeks. We’ve watched a film version of the stage play. Did you see a big boat that sinks in that?”
“No. But this guy. He’s in the film with the big boat wot sinks. So ... when they gonna sink?”
This was more or less the point where Mama decided “Oh fuck this, I’m retiring....”

So maybe this is a lie and Michael knows and feels bad because he's sick of running these four humans through tests they're not allowed to pass?
Or maybe they are going to the Good Place, but Michael -- as a demon, even if he's a reformed one -- isn't sure of how he'll be received when he gets there. Oh no! What if this is like a suicide mission for Michael, seeing his humans finally make it into the Good Place as his last act before being Retired by Good Place personnel?!

They’re the first people to go to The Good Place in hundreds of years. They’ll have nothing in common with anyone there. They’re going to hate it. Tahani will be judged by everyone, everyone will be better than Eleanor, everyone will think Jason’s an idiot. And then Chidi...ooohhhh Chidi. Look at the committee, something as simple as saying “here, here” or being stern forces them to resign. Imagine what that kind of pressure on every decision will do to Chidi’s digestive track.

That was honestly one of the funniest parts of the episode to me. It reminded me of the episode of Family Matters where Laura has to play a Steve-like character in their version of It's a Wonderful Life, and the actress nails it. You're like, "Oh, you're around this guy and his performance every day, you probably picked up a few things."
With these two obviously there's less face time but she is definitely skilled because it felt completely accurate without being overly simple (despite depicting something that's simple and archetypal on the surface)

Chidi: Alright listen—maybe on paper you and Janet don’t make total sense, but who cares? The relationship you have built is wonderful. She knows you and loves you and that’s all that matters.
Jason: Do you really believe that?
Chidi: Of course I do.
Jason: Ahaha sucka!
Chidi: ...sorry?
Jason: I got you so bad. Dude, pretend what you just said is what you said to you instead of to me. And you have to listen to yourself, because it was already in your own head and then it came out! But just like, put it back in your head and realize that it was you talking about you and Eleanor!
Chidi: Against all odds, I know what you mean and I’ve got to give it up. That was— that was good?
Jason: Yeah it was! Chess. Mate.
Jason managing to successfully employ reverse psychology without knowing what either of those words means in context (probably) is so classic him. Or as he said to Chidi later on “classic us!”

That makes sense, but it also begs the question of when the testing will end.
They've been tested, over 800 variations of testing. Michael's right in that they worked hard to save all of humanity, including almost trading their own souls if it meant getting Shawn to agree to the re-evaluation of the afterlife. Eleanor alone passed the first test delivered by Judge Gen, but she's still going with the others.
If the humans have to fear that every promise of the Good Place is a test, that's a torture in itself.

Yeah I feel like him and his long term “friend” and “ roommate” being called "Miss Nancy" and "Aunt Fancy" may be a bit more than maybe

They're going to be unhappy in the good place for some reason. Either guilt about not having to take the test or the straight up boredom of living with only good people.

"First of all, you know, uh, shut up. A-and, second of all, just shut up." Ted delivered this so amazingly.

Skipping to the “fears and phobias” section neglects so much material with which to torture people with.

I love that there was no punchline there. Jason's just actually read, and retained information from, Romeo and Juliet.

He definitely should be in the first run of the test. Get Mr. Rogers out of the Bad Place as soon as possible!

I’m kinda curious how this will turn out with three episodes to go. I’m torn between the story’s smooth landing so far and the penchant for plot twists.
Even if things go south, I doubt it’ll be an unhappy or bad ending.

My prediction is that they will be faced with a dilemma once they arrive. Obviously they know The Good Place can’t be in a good condition given the fact that the members of the committee were ineffectual pushovers, but I think they could be told that should they accept their eternity in The Good Place they can’t oversee the new afterlife program, something they’re reticent to agree to given all of the suspicious shirt they had to uncover in order to get it back on track in the first place.

Prediction: just like being in the Good Place made people better, being tortured in the Bad Place with no hope or end in sight made people much worse. It’s gonna be a lot harder to find easy test subjects that become better than they think

I really love that they are talking about how romance isn't likely to last for literal eternity because people will eventually become bored/grossed out with each other.
But Chidi and Eleanor will still work on their relationship.

Shallow comment, but I am loving Vicky’s hair in this episode. Like possibly best hair of the whole series‽
