The people arguing against it have never experienced a violent mechanical failure on an older lift. Holy fuck put the bar down.

I was at Breck last year and there's one lift that takes you over 5 stories high above the snow and skiers below. Well at one point the lift stopped for a good 10-15 minutes and we were swinging back and forth, in -2 degree (f) weather, with the wind blowing.
That bar was reeeeaaaal nice that day.
Also the leg rests are the shit, they always give me a few more runs at the end of the day.

It pisses me off a little when someone refuses to have the bar down on a lift, it pisses me off a lot when said bar has a footrest.
This guy has the best argument in this entire thread.

The guy that slipped on the chairlift in Vail a couple years ago, got hit pants caught and dangled upside down with his pants at his knees and butt exposed did not have the bar down. Case and point.

Nice find.
I think the existence of bars on the lift depends massively on where you are skiing. The new express lifts here don't have them. But it certainly doesn't hurt to lower 'em if you've got 'em (and for people like me who get scared of heights, it can be a mite more comforting).
