A Writer's Diary by Virginia Woolf
Excerpts from Woolf's diaries, on her writing process, relationships with other writers, responses to criticism and literary life more broadly. I'm not that familiar with English literature, only read a couple of Woolf's short stories, nevertheless find it interesting enough.
Klimasmutek, by Jitka Holasová
Finished. An overview of psychotherapeutic methods for dealing with "environmental distress", aimed mostly at laypeople. My impressions are mixed.
Firstly, this actually isn't a book about addressing the "climate grief" in the title and blurb on the cover. Instead, the focus is on alienation—from ones own body and the environment. The longest chapter discusses social-media addiction while never even touching topics specific to environmental issues such as industry-sponsored disinformation campaigns.
I was initially thrilled to see references to the big names in eco-philosophy such as Arne Næss, David Abram or Joanna Macy. The book does showcase multiple eco-therapeutic methods, e.g., Sirpa Arvonen's Forest Mind. It also points out various caveats: the need for systemic solutions to systemic problems like climate change, the individualist self-improvement trap, esoteric/spiritual fraudsters etc. Alas, I'd appreciate more such warnings, for example when presenting unfalsifiable "theories" in psychology.
