Oatmeal Toppings and Additions v2.0
A few years ago, I asked the community what they did to help boost the staple food of oatmeal. As we all know, oats are quiet inexpensive, shelf-stable for quite some time (when properly stored), and highly adaptable as a staple ingredient. Oatmeal is well balanced from a caloric standpoint, neither being low on energy nor too high in energy. It has soluble fiber which is not only incredibly important in digestion, but provides one with the feeling of being full for longer through the day. Oatmeal also has thiamin, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, manganese, selenium, vitamin B6, vitamin A, calcium, omega-3 fatty acids, and iron.
Some of the top comments from last time include brown sugar and crunchy peanut butter, savory oatmeal with carmelized onions, Parmeasn cheese, and a fried egg, and a fruit and nut version with warm winter spices.
So, both in order to show off your oatmeal prowess and also to expand your knowledge of how to make this wonderful food, what do you do to fancy up that oatmeal?

A dollop of canned pumpkin and a dash of pumpkin pie spice. Add sugar to taste.
Squeeze of lime juice (bottled is fine) and stir in coconut cream.
Maraschino cherries and the juice from a jar. I much prefer this one cold, like overnight oats.
Bacon crumbles. Savory oatmeal is something I just got into!
Chocolate milk powder or syrup and sliced bananas.
Honestly? A small scoop of ice cream. It cools down hot oatmeal and it takes on the flavor really well. Strawberry is a good one.

Ice cream! What an interesting idea, that never occurred to me. I've done oat-based granola on ice cream, but never just ice cream in the oatmeal. I'll have to give that a try the next time I pick up lactase.

My favorite is peanut butter and honey. My second favorite is dried berries (I get them at ALDI) and semi-sweet chocolate chips. Classic maple syrup and brown sugar, of course. Bananas with PB is another personal favorite (especially if it is in overnight oat form.)

Dried berries and chocolate chips is one I've not heard. That sounds delicious. Maybe made with a little cream, that could practically pass as a dessert!

I love oatmeal. My additions brain dump: canned or fresh fruit, cottage cheese, almonds, protein powder of all flavors, rocky road themed with chocolate chips and a few marshmallows and walnuts... I also used really dry cooked oatmeal like rice for leftovers. I use it like bread crumbs in my recipes (blender to make it more choppy). Bears eat oats and goats eat oats, and little lambs eat ivy. A kid would eat ivy too, would nt you?

I used to make carrot cake oatmeal because it was the only way I could get myself to eat carrots. It was oatmeal plus a cup of grated carrots, raisins, nutmeg, cinnamon, and some granola for sweetness

Carmelized chopped onions, pepper, a dash of miso, and a soft boiled egg for savory oatmeal.

I just started adding egg whites to mine. Also bananas and I found a honey-cinnamon peanut butter

Right this second I’m eating oatmeal (old fashioned) mixed with apple sauce and topped with two Tablespoons of caramel coffee creamer. I call it caramel apple oatmeal and it’s delicious.
