Discussion Here and Now - 1x01 "Eleven Eleven" - Episode Discussion

Season 1 Episode 1: Eleven Eleven

Aired: February 11, 2018

Synopsis: As Audrey Bayer puts the finishing touches on her husband Greg’s 60th birthday party – a milestone Greg is loath to celebrate – cracks begin to emerge in their progressive, multiracial family. Ramon, the couple’s Colombian-born son, who’s just starting a relationship with Henry, a barista, is having unexplained, recurring encounters with the numbers “11:11.” Duc, adopted from Vietnam, enjoys the fruits of a lucrative career as a “motivational architect,” but his celibacy troubles Audrey. Liberian-born Ashley, a successful fashion-industry exec, is finding more and more reason to shake up her marriage with her husband, Malcolm. And 17-year-old Kristen, the couple’s youngest child, chafes at her banal life, especially compared to her more exotic siblings. After a troubling incident at the birthday party, Audrey and Greg take Ramon to a therapist, Dr. Farid Shokrani, who has an unlikely and unexplainable connection to the young man.

Great opener for the series. Going in I had no clue what this was going to be about and I'm left wanting more. Kristen losing her V while wearing a horse head was hilarious! And Ramon's story is already compelling! Well done, HBO.

I loved it. I think the critics are too focused on show like This is Us, but let be honest, the kind of family of this is us is a dream. Probably they didn't expect either that the show with a multiethnic cast shows how people can be progressive in a bad way, should have been safer and easier for them to show discrimination as exclusion, but they chose the other way round

I worry sometimes with these metaphysical type shows that it will end up being like a John from Cincinnati where it doesn't coalesce quickly enough, remaining effusive elusive to maintain suspense about what is really happening. Obviously Here and Now is one episode in, so it's early to start discussing long range, and Alan Ball has some chops (I can tear up just thinking about the last episode of Six Feet Under) so I have some faith that this will not languish like a show such as John from Cincinnati.

And I just went to check the lock on the front door and noticed that the clock below the TV showed 11:11.... ;-)

Was anyone else disturbed by the deflowering of a 17 year old by a coked up model?

I came because my favorite band, Portugal. The Man, opened the show with their song Live In The Moment and I stayed for the great show!
