"- What cops? Where do you think we are?!"

The least believable thing about the beginning of season 2 was that Jason figured it out at all, let alone before Eleanor.
80
Jan 09 '18
I don’t know if he figured it out so much as had a random thought that by chance turned out to be correct.

u/Seedy88 Jan 05 '18
Michael loves them! He really, really loves them!

Calm down, this could still be part of his torture plan! There will be a season finale twist, and this might very well be it.
55
Jan 07 '18
Then the twist would basically be the same as last season's twist.
I'm all for a twist but it has to be different.

24
u/hollaback_girl Jan 08 '18
I'm pretty sure Michael is genuine but Shawn has known for a while that the experiment is failing so he's now torturing Michael and the rest. "You've got everything you've ever wanted" has come up multiple times; too many to be a coincidence.

Kinda teared up at that part though still guarded in case Michael is deceiving them

Post episode thoughts:
-
MINDY GOT HER COKE...plus a sex robot.
-
I cannot begin to say how much I love that Michael literally said "Something something something Vicki something something" and then Janet repeated it verbatim.
-
The clues seemed a bit contrived at first, but the fact that there were actually 1200 thrown out there pointing them in that direction but humans aren't smart enough to catch them all sort of makes up for it.
-
Speaking of that, it might be fun on rewatch to search for other clues. Things like look for the first letter of each word.
-
One last related thought---given how random they seemed, it's also totally possible that Michael really didn't leave the clues and they just lucked out, and the Janet play was just to get rid of Vicki...though I hope things are as they seemed.

It really is the Medium Place - get a sex robot buuuut no genitals.

i mean, wind chimes are long and hard, so I think she can make it work
118
u/RaeADropOfGoldenSun Jan 05 '18
That’s what I thought! That he was like “yes. Those clues that I left. I left them very purposefully. The clues. That I left.”
105
u/marsalien4 Jan 05 '18
But he too quickly knew about Kierkegaard and all that. I believe him.

That is NOT how I expected that opening conversation to go
237
u/gay-chordata Jan 05 '18
yeah honestly i'm in disbelief that shawn still thinks this is the second attempt
283
u/poktanju Jan 05 '18
Shawn is betraying Michael while Michael is betraying Shawn. Calling it.
2
u/martianinahumansbody Jan 05 '18
Not totally sure on that. I had the feeling, but feel like more likely Vicki gets out of the gooey place, tells Shawn.
Or he finds Micheal's audio recordings of his failed attempt logs

We were put in Michael's point of view during season 2 so it was established he had fucked up.

being put in another bad place sounds like the end of the road to me - if you can't get Good Janet to call trains and you're (presumably) locked in a cell there's little you can do to escape

I feel like they’re going to stay in the neighborhood instead of going to the good place. Michael said during Elenor’s roast that “this is exactly the place you deserve”
52
u/Ahuva Jan 05 '18
It felt as if Shaun was leading Michael on, just like Michael told Elinor in the first episode that she reached the good place.
10
7
u/Grembert Jan 07 '18
But why would he?
He's his boss and has no reason to put on some kind of show for Michael and as far as we know is very opposed to this kind of punishment.
Unless they just change Shauns personality for a twist he's not the type for these kind of schemes and would just retire Michael.
6
u/Ahuva Jan 07 '18
I am seeing this as a possible clue to a coming twist. Maybe, they are all in a Different Place. A Place where people and demons get a chance to find redemption through learning to support each other. Then, Shaun would be playing a role to help Michael in his journey towards redemption.

u/imfallinfree Jan 05 '18
*"I figured out the first clue!" "No, I did."
"I was there, though!"*
One day, Jason. One day.
225
u/TheUltimateTeaCup Jan 05 '18
Hey, he did figure out they're in the bad place once.

57
u/leoex Jan 06 '18
actual twice. One in season 1 when he tell Elanor that "this is a prank show"

He was the one who noticed that Michael used the wrong name. He brought Elanor's attention to it. He should get some credit.

I'm fine with just the Derek. I've got someone who can rob any bank in the world, drugs are useless to me

u/Seedy88 Jan 05 '18
Where does Jason think they are?
217
u/finally_not_lurking Jan 05 '18
They’re obviously on a prank show.

For the first time since the last episode of Season 1, we can all love Michael again with no reservations. Bask in it, friends.

You mean Drink it in Maaaaannnn

u/rydan Jan 05 '18
I actually don't like this side of him. I preferred the completely pure version that thinks the fire snakes ate everything or the purely evil person that likes to torture people.
5
5
Jan 05 '18
I dunno, his expressions at the end of the episode make me doubt him. He looked guilty/uncertain.
20
u/marsalien4 Jan 06 '18
That was when Tahani mentioned going to the real good place. He's feeling guilty because that is probably impossible, even though he mentioned it as a possibility to them.
6
5
u/MathTeachinFool Jan 07 '18
Agreed. Although, if the show had to end, turning one of the the Bad Place's architects into a moral person would definitely get you points to go to the actual Good Place!
1
u/KittenTablecloth Jan 08 '18
I think the catch is that they all have to stay in the neighborhood. He said during the roast of Elenor that “this is exactly the place you belongs”.
It’s not being tortured forever so it’s still helping them out, but it’s not the good place either. Which is why he looked guilty when Tahani said that
2
u/WritingPromptPenman Jan 11 '18
That was just one of the “clues.”
Derek Bortles = Get Derek Crying during the last song = wait until the last song This is where you belong = don’t actually go to the medium place Underneath the trolley = hide under the train

u/GrinningDentrassi Jan 05 '18 edited Jan 05 '18
"I was so scared for you! " /me melts
91
u/mujie123 Jan 05 '18
That seemed... Really weird for Michael... Even if he has changed.
131
Jan 05 '18
I think he's not used to feeling some of the emotions he's dealing with now. They probably hit him in a very strong and unsettling way, and he's not equipped to handle it sometimes.

53
u/Thundershrimp Jan 06 '18
Loved their attempts to act casual.
8
u/sm0gs Jan 10 '18
I had to pause the episode because I was laughing so hard during that moment. So good
202
u/SunilClark Jan 05 '18
Michael’s expression during “We’ll finally be able to go to The Good Place” makes me suspicious, but thankfully not in the “he’s not on their side” way
145

u/KittenTablecloth Jan 08 '18
I said above, but I think he looks this way because the catch is that they all have to stay in the neighborhood. He said during the roast of Elenor that “this is exactly the place you belongs”.
It’s not being tortured forever so it’s still helping them out, but it’s not the good place either.
5
u/hitchopottimus Jan 08 '18
It kind of is, though. The Good Place runs through Janets, and they have a Good Place Janet, so as long as she can do her thing, they can have anything they want. That's a pretty good place to be.
2
u/pocket_galvanometer Jan 11 '18
Indeed. That was a very "there's something I'm not telling you" face when Tahani mentioned the Good Place. My guess is that, just like the demons can't go to the medium place, they also can't go to the Good Place. Or perhaps he never had a way to get them in. But then... why propose to go with them in the first place? Seems like an unnecessary detail to add to the proposal. Perhaps he always had an alternate destination in mind?
184
u/jbrav88 Jan 05 '18
Fucking Magenets, how do they work?
38
u/KidCoheed Jan 05 '18
I'm pretty sure ICP just put that one on God

Michael calling Bortles “Derrick” is a hint, right?
88
u/reginaomnis Jan 05 '18
And the Mindy St. Clair reference, I was thinking. I was trying to find a clue in each of the roasts, but didn’t catch any in Tahani’s or Chidi’s.
51
u/sinlad Jan 05 '18
Tahani's clue was the last song of the night (which is when Derek left for the Medium place), and Chidi's was laying on the train (trolley) tracks.
21
u/finally_not_lurking Jan 05 '18
I’m definitely going to have to rewatch it afterwards and see what clues there were.

ahh i get it... jason says "i can't believe michael betrayed us again. why is it always the ones you most expect?"
and that's exactly it... we'd most expect michael to betray them, but he DIDN'T because of the way this show is written
247
Jan 05 '18
Michael didn't smile genuinely at the end of the episode when they thought they were going to the real good place. Something isn't right...
243
u/grumblepup Jan 05 '18
I think he was lying before when he said he had a way to get them there (which was part of his spiel to convince them to help him). But I also think together, they'll all figure something out.
82
u/TheMasterLup Jan 05 '18
Yeah! That made me suspicious. Definitely didn't give off the right vibes.
59
u/GoodJanet Jan 05 '18
They still need to deal with the demons coming back oh boy here comes the pennies🤢
29
75
u/skiptothelew Jan 05 '18
They were all talking about how they'd gotten exactly what they all wanted, and earlier in the ep Michael seemed conflicted when he got the promotion bc that was, on some level, what he always thought he wanted. I think he was partially thinking back to that.

He would be kind of maddening to spend time with, though. Dude needs serious therapy.

And Bortles took me to the promised land in fantasy this year so their offense is doing something right. He's alright in my book.
As a side note, I hope the Jags win the super bowl this year and that works it's way into the show next season.
