Fight in /r/pics when a "smug skeptic" says "we, as Americans are joke to the world."

The rest of the world has progressed to new and better things.

UK here. I wouldn't say "better".

My only consolation with the events of the past year is that you guys fucked up too so we aren't the only dumb ones this time round.

The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

Our only consolation is that we haven't fucked up as hard as the States yet. I feel like we're in some sort of arms race of stupid and I'm worried what our next Trump (ha!) card will be.

according to cons on reddit the only countries in the world are the US, bastion of freedom and rights, and those in the middle east of which most of europe falls under as well that stones anyone who speaks their mind

Don't forget that Australia is apparently a myth purported by the US government

I mean...our president sucks, but it's not like we're a third-world nation. Some countries are better in some areas and worse in others.

I mean...our president sucks, but it's not like we're a third-world nation.

Exactly. I live in Turkey and it's like, imagine if the deal in the US was that if you (journalist, politician, celebrity, sportsman, citizen, literally no one is safe from this threat) said something bad about the president you could very possibly go to jail. So you're stuck in a feedback loop where no one dares criticize the president and no one dares stand up to him because basically anyone who did/does is in jail right now. And everyone is miserable and no one can do anything. Even when you know no one around you can understand what you're saying, you whisper his name or use a euphemism or simply a pronoun, lest someone report you. The paranoia is deep and unsettling.

And as an American living here, it's really disheartening because shit here is all fucked up and all I hear from my Turkish friends is "yep. Been there, done that, still doing it, you'll get used to it, America is still better than anywhere else, what are you complaining about, you'll be rid of him in 4 years, it's not so bad, what's the worst he can do, etc, etc, ad infinitum."

I've ended up with some seriously mixed feelings because Trump is fucking awful and like 'murica and shit and it's scary and disgusting and, and, and... But I'm living in a place where there's a guy who Trump seems to have modeled his administration on in office and no one can do a goddamned thing about it. And that is, objectively speaking, far worse. No matter how bleak things in the US seem/feel/are, Americans can do something about it. And must. I live the repercussions of past complacency and it sucks.

Forreals. The US is 10th in the Human Development Index, yet people act like it's an underdeveloped country

Is the CCTV thing pretty much everywhere? I've seen it mentioned in books and such. Also, do you feel like it's intrusive, or genuinely helpful?

I feel like there is a huge misconception about CCTV in the UK. Almost all of it is privately owned and old as fuck so impossible to access through the internet. No-one at GCHQ can access it and even Government-owned CCTV is owned by local authority so central government can't look at it with ease. There was a small spate of robberies near where I live so lots of people near me bought CCTV. Does that constitute a societal problem? In my opinion, no.

Snoopers' Charter is also a bit overplayed as the Government cannot look at anyone's internet history on demand, they have to get a warrant and even then it is the ISPs that hold the data. I know you didn't mention it but they are normally brought up in the same discussion.

We, as SRDines are joke to Reddit. The rest of Reddit has progressed to new content and effort posts. We are drowning in out [sic] own smugness.

You don't deserve to call yourself a subredditdramacan. You're lucky you have the posts you have.

Downvote away everyone I just want you that do downvote me to take a second and think about how fortunate you are to have been subscribed to a society where no one shit posts or reposts. I'm glad I'm not from say another subreddit where they ban people for speaking their minds.

no one shit posts

I'm gonna have to call you out on that. I shitpost on here daily.

Uses freedom of speech to criticize government and current global reputation

"OMG, why don't you understand how lucky you are to have American freedoms!?"

2

u/[deleted] Aug 27 '17

You don't deserve to call yourself American. You're lucky you have the freedoms you have.

We were lucky, we're not going to have them for long at this rate.

Incoming irony-

Part of Trump's appeal to conservatives was, and I stress that I'm not making this up, "restoring America's image abroad".

On the bright side the next guy will be able to reuse the "Make America Great Again" slogan
