Redditor submits a post stereotyping /pol/ to /r/justneckbeardthings that gets upvoted but many users disagree with it
/r/justneckbeardthings/comments/6uogg2/pol_in_a_nutshell/dlua9st199

justneckbeardthings used to be funny, then it became just neckbeard things.
125
Aug 19 '17
It seems like the vibe changes day-to-day. Sometimes it's just making fun of fat dudes, sometimes it's just making fun of "nice guys" regardless of their appearance, but then there's times like this where the neckbeard comes from inside the sub.
72
Aug 19 '17
There was a post telling users not to use "Autistic" as shorthand for neckbeard, and every other comment was "Lolno FREE SPEECH"
24
u/Imthejuggernautbitch Aug 19 '17
People are using it to further their own political causes which has destroyed it. The mods could fix it but won't.

It's annoying when people argue that /pol/ is just ironically racist. Saying racist things makes you racist, expecially in a medium like the internet.
People claim that they say racist stuff about Jews and PoC just to get a rise out of people, but like, what do they think racist people in real life do? Exactly that. That's why they marched at Charlottesville, to agitate. It's the same shit.
"We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be."
37
u/jitterscaffeine Aug 20 '17
"I only traveled 500 miles to participate in a white power rally IRONICALLY. I'm not a real racist."
17
u/Plazmatic Aug 20 '17
I think the issue is that 4chan used to make ironic racist posts, posts that were meant to be so racist and edgy that you simply couldn't take it seriously (or you couldn't tell if they were being serious). That ambiguity hasn't been there for 5 years at least, but people still remember when it was like that (and likely haven't actually been to the board for years). At a glance it looks the same to them (racist comments from /pol/? par for the course). Now obviously this doesn't change the fact that /pol/ not only has actual racists, but members affiliated with known racist organizations, and I cannot even remember the last time I saw something that wasn't racist come out of /pol/, but conceding the fact that it wasn't always this way but is now might go a long way to stopping these people from acting like /pol/ is just kidding around (provided they aren't rampant TD posters or something).
11
u/Kilahti Aug 20 '17
It's a mix of a) "Any community that gets its laughs by pretending to be idiots will eventually be flooded by actual idiots who mistakenly believe that they're in good company."
and b) says something horrible "But that's horrible." "LOL! I was only pretending to be a Nazi" defense.

u/agareo Aug 23 '17
Good quote that by Descartes

The only people who think being a nazi in public is acceptable are assholes or real nazis.
73
u/IslandSparkz Aug 19 '17
If /pol/ is considered a containment. What are the rest of the boards called?
73
Aug 19 '17
Most of the rest are hobby boards, but god help you if any of those hobbies end up tangentially related to something that triggers /pol/
Want to talk about spiderman on /co/? Nothing but people bitching about M.J. casting. I don't even watch or care about rick & morty but jesus you'd think they'd killed someone with how much that board complains about a FEMALE WRITER RREEEEEEE
/tg/ seems to be the only one immune to it.
Also that image in the thread is absolutely 100% accurate and anyone who disagrees is just trying to hide their powerlevel.

u/Saviordd1 Aug 20 '17
I don't think it's that bad? They tend to drop "faggot" a lot but that's about it. No mentions of a jewish conspiracy or anything. And I'm pretty sure half the website is bitching about the lack of Sisters of Battle support so there's that.

Aug 20 '17
A while back I turned on NPR as I was getting into the car and some garden show was on. Normally I'd turn it off as I don't garden, but for some reason I kept listening. They were talking about beetle traps for your rose garden. Someone had called in saying they didn't work. They places the traps and their beetle problem was worse than ever. The host asked a few questions and quickly diagnosed the problem: they were putting the traps inside the garden. The traps were doing their jobs and attracting the beetles. As the beetles were moving through the garden to get to the traps, however, they ate everything along their path. The traps are far more effective when placed outside the garden so the beetles encounter them before ever seeing a rose.
We see the same issue with so-called containment boards. They don't contain the assholes, but they attract them. Assholes come to the site looking for a community of like minded people, and end up shitting on everything else once they get here.

Is there a recap or a "best of" somewhere that I could entertain myself with?
6
u/stormtrooper1701 Aug 20 '17
Only because the mods actually give enough of a shit to enforce that rule elsewhere. Unfortunately, they don't seem to care enough to crack down on racism and bigotry as much as they do to a cartoon horse show.

Let me tell you this-- r/Drama is one of the most malevolent, cruel, coldhearted online communities you'll ever find, and even as a supporter of free speech it appalls me that Reddit would allow such a vile, festering hub of bigotry and sadism to exist. You think [slur]town was bad? That subreddit, if you pick up on the dog-whistles (and many don't even bother with that-- say want you want about Stormfront, at least it bans "n[slur]"), will reveal itself to you as Reddit's number one hub for the web's most hardened Nazis, Klansmen, Fascists, and Gamergaters. You'll notice on the sidebar that it encourages members to be as dramatic as possible. That's intentional. They encourage arguments in the comments section. That's intentional. You know the Three Minute Hate (it's from this underrated book 1985, give it a read, it's scary how much it parallels our society)? It's like that, they want to stoke the flames of reactionary rage so they continue to dogpile every progressive and minority who enters the subreddit, normalizing these evil feelings. They brigade from subreddit to subreddit, having an entire cabal of mods spanning hundreds of communities, gaslighting lived experiences of the oppressed and unashamedly bolstering Reddit's homegrown white supremacy movement. They've kink-shamed hundreds of people too, some even... to death. I fear that r/drama may be producing an entire army of Dylann Roofs and Elliot Rogers, and I highly suggest that nobody dares visit that horrible subreddit, lest you potentially fall victim to its corruptive aura.

As Satre says, bigots have all the time in the world to pursue their passion, but people who are against the bigots have more demands on their daily life
Never believe that anti-Semites are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know that their remarks are frivolous, open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly, since he believes in words. The anti-Semites have the right to play. They even like to play with discourse for, by giving ridiculous reasons, they discredit the seriousness of their interlocutors. They delight in acting in bad faith, since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert. If you press them too closely, they will abruptly fall silent, loftily indicating by some phrase that the time for argument is past. It is not that they are afraid of being convinced. They fear only to appear ridiculous or to prejudice by their embarrassment their hope of winning over some third person to their side.

It would be very difficult to get Tumblr to organize together and do anything, because of its format and not really having communities where anyone can post and have anyone following a specific community see it, like reddit's subreddits or 4chan's threads. You have to follow individuals, so the only way to organize something effectively is for a very very popular blog to make or share a post and hope enough people share it.
The last time a group of Tumblr users came together to organize anything they created Dashcon. If you don't know, please please google it for an hour's worth of good drama reads.
11
3
u/BloomEPU Aug 20 '17
Dashcon wasn't really anything to do with "tumblr users", it was just an inexperienced bunch of students who didn't know how to organise a con. There actually are smaller cons that are organisedby tumblr users and they've all gone fine.
2
u/hederah Aug 20 '17
I used to live near where dashcon took place and god am I glad I wasn't stupid enough to go.
3
u/PostNuclearTaco Aug 20 '17
To be honest, there is a lot of speculation that the Tumblr raid was organized by another 4chan board for the sake of stirring up drama between Tumblr and 4chan. If I remember correctly, it resulted in Tumblr being flooded with gore and porn in all tags in retaliation for getting raided.

u/TossMeAwayToTheMount Aug 19 '17

In the VICE Charlottesville documentary, the camera shows a young kid, probably like 19, shouting homophobic slurs with the neo-nazis, and then he flashes the "OK sign" that /pol/ circlejerked about tricking the media into thinking was a white power symbol. If you're doing that alongside actual nazis, while you chant slurs, it's not ironic anymore.
There's also that other video of the guy that took off his neo-nazi stuff and claimed he just liked being offensive.
And either way, all you're doing is giving actual racists plausible deniability and acting as a propaganda vector.

Mother Night is such a relevant book these days.

u/PrincessKindness Aug 20 '17
Yes! Around the time that it was announced that Bannon would have a role in the White House, and people were trying to say that him running Breitbart didn't mean that he shared the website's views, I would always tell them to read that book.
“Say what you will about the sweet miracle of unquestioning faith, I consider a capacity for it terrifying and absolutely vile.”
“There are plenty of good reasons for fighting...but no good reason to ever hate without reservation, to imagine that God Almighty hates with you, too. Where's evil? It's that large part of every man that wants to hate without limit, that wants to hate with God on its side. It's that part of every man that finds all kinds of ugliness so attractive....it's that part of an imbecile that punishes and vilifies and makes war gladly.”
“...this is a hard world to be ludicrous in, with so many human beings so reluctant to laugh, so incapable of thought, so eager to believe and snarl and hate.”
Also, if you haven't read it yet, also check out Hocus Pocus, which was also written by Vonnegut, and isn't talked about as much as it deserves to be.
“They had managed to convert their wealth, which had originally been in the form of factories or stores or other demanding enterprises, into a form so liquid and abstract, negotiable representations of money on paper, that there were few reminders coming from anywhere that they might be responsible for anyone outside their own circle of friends and relatives.”
“So what indeed! The lesson I myself learned over and over again when teaching at the college and then the prison was the uselessness of information to most people, except as entertainment. If facts weren't funny or scary, or couldn't make you rich, the heck with them.”
"[Freedom of speech] isn't something somebody else gives you. That's something you give to yourself."
"...profanity and obscenity entitle people who don't want unpleasant information to close their ears and eyes to you."

126

I mean even back then, the racism wasn't completely "ironic". It's not like they called everyone n-words because they were trying to disrupt language or some shit. It was always just edgy bullshit stemming from lack of empathy.
42
u/madcuttlefishdisplay Aug 20 '17
The racism being ironic at first really doesn't change my low opinion of 4chan much, if I'm being honest. When you decide you want to feel superior and exclusionary on the internet, and your go-to is "I know, I'll pretend to be a horrible, hateful bag of shit, isn't that funny!" it kind of says something.
I mean, we here at SRD have proved pretty conclusively that you can totally feel smugly superior to people while still condemning racism.

I haven't been to pol in years, but when I posted on the board, it was always about extremist ideologies and taking them as far as they'd go. Everyone was being edgy for edgy's sake and it was depressing. Commies, Nazis, anarchists, conspiracy theorists, they were all posting ridiculous shit to the point it stopped being funny. The funniest board to me was fit. Their autism when it came to working out got to the point where they'd post pictures of themselves eating pocket eggs, hard boiled eggs they kept in their pockets for when they got hungry. The funniest one to me was the one of a guy eating a pocket egg in front of a group of chicks he was chatting up at the bar. Their faces were ones of pure disgust.

/pol/ is a confusing place. It's some mixture of true believers and trolls and no one knows who is who and how many of each there are.

my issue with that post is that pol is a very diverse set of extremists. There's fascists, alt-righters, ancaps, ancoms, black nationalists, white nationalists, Zionists, hard socialists, leftypol etc. It's a cesspool of extreme views that are about half real and half trolls baiting others. to only say pol is alt-righters is to misrepresent. To be clear, extremism is bad, racism is bad, but misrepresentation is also bad.
-37
u/freet0 Aug 19 '17 edited Aug 19 '17
I mean, that is clearly written by someone who has never been on /pol/ because that's not how they think at all. If anything posters try to over represent their ideological unity to make it look like they have everyone behind them.
There are political compass threads there like every day and while there's definitely a bias towards upper right, there are always people all over it.
And the "not one person" "not an argument" type shit is far more redditty. Again, if you want to see how /pol/ reacts to something just go there and look. There are threads by dissenters all the time. They get 'edgy' responses not 'smug'(reddit) responses. Telling people they'll be gassed or to kill themselves or they're race traitors or whatever. They don't try to look good on their forum because they don't think they need to. They view their righteousness as a self evident.
While its up you can see them discuss this meme right here. Just look at their replies to the guy with the anarchist flag (red and black). http://boards.4chan.org/pol/thread/138220450
