DC or Marvel? Let the debates begin

So he took a fairly serious question, comparing the body of work of these two major companies, and just flippantly tossed it aside.
He acts like they asked Goldblum about which side of the abortion debate he falls on and Goldblum was like, "eh who gives a fuck."
It's comicbooks. Move on. And this is coming from a guy with a huge Marvel Avengers tattoo.

u/kasutori_Jack Aug 07 '17
fairly serious question
...

u/OldBiffFromTheFuture Aug 07 '17
In no world is "Do you like ham or turkey sandwiches better" and this is the same type of thing. Only on stereotypical online communities is this anything close to a hard-hitting question.
19
u/dethb0y Aug 08 '17
Here's a real serious question: When superman had the xenomorph in him and it was about to bust out of his chest, would that xenomorph (empowered as it was by his kryptonian anatomy) have been a more engaging and interesting hero than superman?
I think it would be.
12
u/arsitrouke Aug 08 '17
But superman is often interesting because of how his humanity and morals interact with his incredible power. A super powerful, amoral, unstoppable xenomorph would be pretty boring imo

u/KlausFenrir Aug 07 '17
These are the same guys who get upset that people cheered and whooped at the Infinity War trailer in Comic Con. They don't understand that most people don't really give a fuck about the seriousness of comic books.
16
Aug 08 '17
There's a lot of comic books that are genuine works of art.
Most superhero comics are not those comics, let's be real
15
u/kralben Aug 08 '17
Most superhero comics are not those comics, let's be real
And what a lot of people don't get is that "not being art" is totally fine. A lot of comic fans would get upset at what you wrote, but a good chunk of every medium is not super artistically significant. In the same way the there are loud blockbuster movies, or trashy TV shows, they can be part of comics as well. Sometimes you just want to look at a sweet fight.
8
u/Amelaclya1 Aug 08 '17
Why do people get so offended if someone doesn't like the things that they like?
I don't like comic books, and don't know the differences in the two major publishers. But that doesn't mean I have a negative opinion of those that do, or their artists and authors. It's just not my thing.
So even if Goldblum was being dismissive, who cares? I don't get why fans take this shit so personally.
(But for movies, Marvel >> DC. Let's get another fight started)

(But for movies, Marvel >> DC. Let's get another fight started)
With who, exactly?

u/kralben Aug 08 '17
Yeah, people take this shit way too seriously. I spend a good chunk of money every week on comics, but they are entertainment in the same way that anything else is. I really dont understand how some people can get so worked up over other peoples opinions on their entertainment.

You are getting undeserved downvotes from Goldblum fans
Those exist on Reddit?
57
Aug 07 '17
Goldblumites walk amongst you in every facet of your life, unseen, hiding in plain sight. You'll never know when one is near until they strike, and then?
Well, there it is.

u/TitusVandronicus Aug 07 '17
Every time someone downvotes you on Reddit it's because they are part of a secret cabal trying to silence your correct opinion. Clearly.

Well I wouldn't call myself a passionate fan of his the way I am about Kurt Russell, but I think he's quite a good actor.

u/mygawd Aug 08 '17
Well who else would downvote them? It's not like their comment was completely ridiculous

u/BonyIver Aug 07 '17
Comic book content varies from simple to complex just like regular fiction.
And yet I don't often see people passionately debating whether Penguin Books or Viking Press is better
81
u/H37man Aug 07 '17
Penguin Books are far superior.
38
u/itsactuallyobama Aug 07 '17
I'm glad you said something. I thought OP was trying to start some real shit. It's nice to see some logic in here.

Quick Google shows that Penguin owns Viking, and is also merged with Random House.

I used to be really passionate about Barnes and Noble vs Borders Books (I have no idea why; it was a strange teen phase.), but it looks like I was right, because Borders is gone now.

Excuse me I believe you have forgotten the name of our lord and savior Tor?
10
u/dahud Aug 08 '17 edited Aug 08 '17
I was gonna say, Tor and Baen are two publishers that I've seen people really go to bat for, and I don't think it's a coincidence that those are two of the biggest names in genre fiction. Even then, they're not really pitched against each other.
5
u/Amelaclya1 Aug 08 '17
This. Tor master race.
Every time I am in the used book store and don't have anything in particular in mind that I am looking for, I always find myself scanning spines for the Tor logo.

Why can't a person like both DC and Marvel? Especially when they are being done well.
I like Star Wars and Star Trek. Even Battlestar Galactica and Babylon Five. And Firefly and Dune. I can like both Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones. Doctor Who too.
Sure, I don't care for some things as well. Harry Potter and Stargate aren't something I enjoy. I tried to get into them at various times, but never could. But unless I'm joking a bit and making fun of my fellow geeks, I don't really care if somebody else likes them. I have friends who like them both. Good for them finding something they enjoy.
Star Wars is the holiest of the trilogies to me. But I was eight or nine when it originally came out. So it's always going to be best to me, because it came out right at the time when I was forming that opinion.
Just as I am sure some kid today is sure Game of Thrones is never going to be bettered by anything else in the history of man. He is 100% correct for him personally.

This sounds like a Dr.Seuss poem for nerds. I like it.

I always thought it was a stupid argument. I like Marvel's characters and universe better, but that really doesn't mean anything. I've read DC comics that are great and I've read shit from Image and Vertigo that make both look like crap.
Brand loyalty is fucking stupid
7
Aug 08 '17
I don't get it especially with the comics where it should be clear that the creative team is more important than the publisher.
3
u/B_Rhino Aug 08 '17
It's all about who can beat up who.
Batman can beat up iron man so DC is better, duh.

Upvote for mentioning Babylon 5!
Just rewatched it this month and it was a wonderful experience. Thanks for reminding me tho that it's just my pride (far less than time constraints) preventing me from diving into Trek DS9 and other big name shows

Wait, so which one is which?
21
u/C0rnSyrup Aug 08 '17
Only DC fans talk like this.
Also, the best part of saying "Have you seen the new Spiderman?" is you can ask every couple of years, and it still works! Same with "Will they ever make a good Fantastic Four movie?
6
u/Cthonic Aug 08 '17
"Will they ever make a good Fantastic Four movie?
The Roger Corman version already exists, so why would they keep trying to outdo a masterpiece?
3
u/YesThisIsDrake Aug 09 '17
the roger corman fantastic four is unironically the best fantastic four movie that's been made and that should make everyone very sad.

Ah, the RC Cola in the comic version do the Coke/Pepsi debate.

u/Redhotlipstik Aug 08 '17
I thought D.C. owned Dark Horse?
9
1
u/Knife7 Aug 08 '17
D.C. Use to own Dark horse but Dark horse broke off and became its own seperate, independent company due to executive meddling.
4
u/davidreiss666 Aug 08 '17
There was a time when I was young when my father bought nothing but RC Cola. It was one of the few good things about him. Now I can't find it on the self of any of the local supermarkets. I tend to buy store-brand pop here too. It's bottled at the local Coke bottling plant so it's Coke without the markup.
And I tend to prefer Coke to Pepsi, but if Pepsi is a penny cheaper I will happily buy it instead. I'm in favor of cheap.
Of course, when I moved around country when I was younger, I noticed that in most other areas around the country, the local store brand pop was always shit. I think it's just a fluke that it's one of the majors in disguise around here.
2
u/AntiLuke Aug 08 '17
Store brand being name brand sounds like a lucky break. RC is easy to find in Oregon, but I think it's had kind of random luck as to where it can find a foothold.

Image comics was where it was at, but Dark Horse did those amazing Star Wars comics - Dark Empire.
2
u/kralben Aug 08 '17
Controversial opinion time: The Marvel Star Wars comics are way better than anything Dark Horse published. I have read a good chunk fo the Dark Horse stuff (not all of it, so I could have missed some gems), but it comes across as fan fiction-y far too often. Maybe if I had been reading as it came out, it would have been better, but some of the new Marvel stuff has been legitimately great (the Han Solo mini, the Chewbacca mini, and the first Darth Vader run).
That said, I might have crap taste

Someone just compared JK Rowling and William Shakespeare.
Lmfao.
18
u/Nimonic Aug 08 '17
I mean... I'm not actually a fan of Harry Potter at all, but nor do I think Shakespeare was some unassailable, unmatched talent either. He was great.
41
u/delta_baryon Aug 07 '17
Yeah they're nothing alike. One is incredibly derivative, is hugely popular despite being looked down on by contemporary intellectuals, and wrote far too many sequels.
The other is JK Rowling.

By the time Richard III came back in the fourth clone body I was ready to walk out of the theatre.

Listen, there's just no way for me to understand who you really are as a person until we discuss your feelings about these rival mass-market entertainment companies. For example, which of these two money factories is the more shameless whore in their merchandising?

This isn't a Marvel vs DC thing, it's just SLJ is a whore.

Hey, DC's trying. Dan Jurgens may be making an even bigger continuity mess in trying to "fix" everything but at least... actually I don't know what he's doing.

tbf, they certainly are sticking to their guns with all the changes going on. At least last I checked.
Its like they took all the complaints people had, backlogged it and then just UNLEASHED IT all at once.
Or people who grew up in those times were people who finally joined up.
That or they finally got the courage to look at their social networks.
