Moderator Post [MODPOST] Five Year Birthday "Worldbuilding" Contest!

That's right, this subreddit is now five years old!

I've heard worse excuses to have a contest :) This one is a little different. The idea here is you take an existing short story you've previously written and write something else in the same world using the prompt below as a starting point for inspiration (doesn't need to be quoted).

Prompt:

"I've heard of that, but I never thought it was true."

Rules and Guidelines:

  • Do not enter unless you plan to read and vote on your assigned entries
  • Each entry must have two parts associated with it:
    • Original short story between 1,000 and 2,500 words (if you don't have one, you can write one)
    • Newly written story taking place in the same world between 1,000 and 2,500 words
  • New story must be written for this contest (not preexisting) and self-edited
  • Both parts must be your work
  • Keep it in the same world and have a new main character as opposed to continuing the story
  • One entry (including original and new stories) per person
  • Entries must be submitted by Saturday, August 5th, 2017 at 11:59 PM PST (http://www.worldtimebuddy.com/)

To Enter:

Submit a post to this sub by the deadline following the rules above and using the following as your title:

[PI] Title of Your Entry – Worldbuilding - #### Words

  • "Title of Your Story" is a title that ties together the two stories (you can also separate each part inside the post with their own titles)
  • Replace first #### with the total word count for the original story plus the new story

    https://capitalizemytitle.com if you need help

Prizes:

  • First Place: $50*
  • Second Place: $20*
  • Third Place: $10*

Prizes via PayPal, Amazon egift card, or as a donation to The Children’s Literacy Foundation

Next Steps:

  • A voting thread will be posted after the deadline where each participant will be placed into a group
  • Each group will read and vote on all entries from another group (using new 3-vote system)
  • Winners of each group will move to final voting round
  • Everyone who entered will be able to vote in final round
  • Random gold will be given to voters!
  • Winners will be announced, prizes awarded, and we'll all celebrate!

Questions? Feel free to ask below!

Hi Mods, I've submitted my entry here.

Very grateful if you could let me know if there are any formatting issues with the entry which I need to rectify! I've gone through the comments on this post to ensure I kept to the rules, but if I've missed anything out, I'll change it ASAP!

Thank you for organizing yet another great contest!

Quick question. I sometimes put a link to my subreddit at the bottom of my stories (if I remember that is). Is it okay to do that in the competition entry?

Sure, why not?

So what is the better winner? A story with amazing writing, but only decent worldbuilding or the story with decent writing, but amazing worldbuilding?

Only the voters know for sure!

Most of these fuckers are just looking for "the twist"

I really hope Hydrael enters this contest, he has such amazing worlds already built.

Hey, so I'm writing my stories together because nothing I had previously written felt right, but is it okay if I switch the order up because it works better? like, the first story is the prompted one, and the second story is different?

u/MajorParadox Aug 04 '17

Sure, no problem!

Is it in separate posts of in one?

u/Psuet Aug 03 '17

Never mind, I found my answer.

Glad I could help! :)

If anyone remembers the "Red Button Kills a person randomly every 1000 presses, the only way to not die is to press the button" prompt from a couple months ago, I would LOVE to see that

u/MajorParadox Aug 02 '17

Sounds cool! Why don't you write something for it? You can write both parts new if you don't have an existing one!

2

u/celloninja7 Aug 03 '17

Thanks! I'll definitely try.

Where can we read the submissions?

1

u/MajorParadox Aug 02 '17

You can search for [PI] posts and "Worldbuilding" for now, or wait until the deadline is reached. There will be a voting thread posted with links and instructions.

but it's only 500 words, can we expand that prompt to meet 1000?

Yep

Does it even have to be a prompt?

Nope! Just the new part is prompted by the contest.

This is such a unique and creative idea for the contest!! I just saw this for the first time, and I'll try to enter if I can get something done in time!

My question: Are we allowed to edit our original? I just read over one of mine that was I thinking about, and I found just a few words that I felt like should be cut or could be changed to be more clear. Changes made would not change the story or anything like that. It would only a "cleaning up" change.

My question: Are we allowed to edit our original?

Yes, no problem! We allow a new story written if you don't have an "original" story, so it'd be silly not to allow editing it :)
