[S05E19] - 'Dangerous Liaisons' Post Episode Discussion
551
u/sirhippieangel Apr 27 '17
"what'd I say about calling me 'Hoss'?"
"uhh, don't?"
"...yeah."
Lance and Wild Dog interactions are beautiful.
130
136
u/Sonia341 Apr 27 '17
Rene is like I will still call you Hoss to annoy you.
By the way Oliver-John friendship just found itself a competition in the Lance-Rene friendship department.
46
u/ZenChampion Apr 27 '17
Here's hoping that they don't kill off Wild Dog this season. He has become my third favorite character in the entire show.
15
u/Elendel Apr 27 '17
If he's getting his daughter back, he might be out though. Being a vigilante while raising your kid? Not the best way to parent.

And Paul Blackthorne's acting in the scene where Rene is meeting with his daughter... goddamn beautiful.
9
5
u/peon47 Apr 27 '17
Watch it again...
"What have I told you about calling me Hoss?"
"Don't."
"Right. Sit down."
"Are you firing me?"
Makes a horse noise.4
u/davidinopeople Apr 27 '17
The best part of that scene was that lance said yeah knowing it wasn't going to stop and the way the purpose of that exchange was totally lost on Rene.

u/Choco316 Apr 27 '17
What's funny is Hoss is actually a sign of respect, granted Renee is using it sarcastic half the time

It was nice to have a month off from Curtis's talking.
444
u/rocknotroll Apr 27 '17
"what's your vector, Victor? Huehue." A man died, Curtis. Jeez.
340
u/blackfireproduction1 Apr 27 '17
Curtis showed more sympathy for the destroyed arcade game than the ARGUS agents that were gunned down
114
10
u/freakincampers Apr 27 '17
Well duh, those arcade machines are vintage. Some of those parts are extremely hard to find. Other parts are simply not made anymore, and can't be replaced.
ARGUS agents on the other hand, are a dime a dozen.
6
u/LexGonGiveItToYa Apr 27 '17
To be fair, I think most of us did. That was an awesome arcade cabinet damn it!
2
89
u/Swqnky Apr 27 '17
Sigh. And also when they got back from the Argus v Helix mission. Just stop talking please lol
55
u/BaggyOz Apr 27 '17
I don't think I'd mind if they leaned into that. Just make him a total socioopath who doesn't understand people. A nerdy Amos-like character.

That's my main problem with Curtis and Felicity. People die and they just crack jokes about it.

u/Nansai Apr 27 '17
So i'm new to Arrow, I caught up during the break Flash was having. I have to ask, has he always been this annoying? He just rambles on and on and on. I skipped season 4 because everyone said it was awful so I never got to see him be introduced to the team.
82
u/Swqnky Apr 27 '17
In my personal opinion, he's gotten worse with season 5. This could be me repressing season 4 memories but I feel like they're really pushing Curtis to do the "quirky nerd that says quirky things accidentally all of the time" thing they had Felicity doing in the earlier seasons. It was generally received well with her but it's just missing the mark with him. Even in season 4 he was kind of outspoken in a textbook quirky way but they seem to be doubling down this season.
→ More replies (8)5
u/SawRub Apr 27 '17
They're trying too hard with him. When he was first introduced he wasn't that bad. In fact, people here were hoping he'd replace Felicity.

You know a show has done a good job of making you care about a character when you root for their personal redemption instead of the main villain going down.
49
u/NeoStorm247 Apr 27 '17
I think it's gonna go 1 of 2 ways:
1 - He's successful and gets his daughter back, but has to retire from being Wild Dog because he's a single parent. This writes him out of the series.
2 - Something goes wrong and he doesn't gain custody
14
u/Graffers Apr 27 '17
If he's out fighting crime, he won't be home to drink and forget shit on the oven. I guess he could still leave shit on the oven. I'm just assuming he doesn't drink before vigilanting.
→ More replies (2)7
u/superbabe69 Apr 27 '17
Only problem is his actor is signed on for next season as a regular, so he has to stay somehow
3
u/screenwriterjohn Apr 27 '17
In real life, a vigilante probably shouldn't be the sole guardian of a kid though.

It's a good arc, but it seemed really weird to cut between that and the stuff that was going down this episode action-wise. Complete tonal shifts.

u/MeatTornado25 Apr 27 '17
well then i guess we didn't need to go through all this trouble to get the magic device to find him
157
Apr 27 '17
I hope this means they don't use that ever again. It makes zero sense on how it works
126
u/NeoStorm247 Apr 27 '17
If it has anything remotely to do with Felicity it actually can't make sense.
5
62
u/muhash14 Apr 27 '17
Maybe that was the point. The device was so retarded in theory and yet Felicity still bought it because she's so hell bent on finding Chase.
6
2
u/BCON_MaliceCorp Apr 30 '17
I agree, Felicity pretty much crossed the line because she believed it was the only way to get Chase. Just to find that it is useless technology because Chase is freaking 10 steps ahead.
7
u/Summer_solestice Apr 27 '17
It doesn't make zero sense.
From the CEO of the company that's behind heartbeat authentication
Bionym claims it has initial performance data, which it will release later this year, showing that its ECG system outperformed face recognition technologies, but that ECG was still not as accurate as the very top-of-the-line fingerprint systems. But for those concerned about identity theft, Martin points out that a three-tier system protects them: a person would have to steal the Nymi, replicate a user's unique heart rhythm and have access to their device. "In practical situations, the false positive rate of the system is effectively zero," he says.
If a user is stressed or exercises, the band should continue to function, Martin says. Although if you had just run a marathon, then immediately put the band on, the Nymi may struggle for a few minutes to get an accurate reading, he admits. "The system tolerates regular variation. It doesn't require your heartbeat to be exactly the same every time."
In the DC world, every existing thechnology is almost perfected.
If heartbeats aren't unique enough, at least they should provide a list of people with the matching heartbeat template. But other than that, it makes perfect sense.

Are you dumb? The magic device WAS the bomb
Edit: upon further browsing of the sub it seems what I thought was known may not have been. I apologize, you are, in fact, not dumb
25
u/iwishiwasamoose Apr 27 '17
Whether the magic tracking device was really a tracker or a bomb, the concept of the tracker was horrible. That may have been u/gameofsnowcones's point. A tracker that scans the world to find a specific person's heartbeat? What? How does that make any sense? For one, everyone's heartbeat constantly changes. Go for a jog, get your heart pumping and suddenly you're undetectable. Meditating, going to sleep, watching a scary movie, being aroused, walking up a flight of stares, sooo many ways that your heartbeat changes. Second, what's it scanning? Sound? Does it control every microphone in the world? If your average mic could pick up a heartbeat, surely we could all hear everyone's heartbeat at all times, audibly, but we don't. Maybe some mics are sensitive enough to pick up a heartbeat, but not most, certainly not unless you hold the mic right to your chest. Or does the device increase use cameras to see everyone's pulse? Then you could foil the tracker with long sleeves and a high collar. What does it use? The whole idea is silly. Anyone should have recognized it was silly.

Probably the worst episode of the season. That said, I'm still optimistic. This season has been strong. 16 good episodes and 3 bad? Solid streak. This was likely a fluke, if we're being honest. This was just setup for next episode, which will be setup for the back half of the season that's promptly forgotten.
That said, those last lines from Felicity? COME ON. She betrayed the team OVERTLY and compromised them, even endangering Diggle and putting Oliver in a laser trap, and she comes galavanting into the cave. She makes no apologies and even SAYS THAT OLIVER WAS IN THE WRONG FOR TRYING TO STOP HER. She makes her betrayal of the team ABOUT HER and tries to blame Ollie for HER actions, then accuses him of LYING TO HER.
WHY does she have any appeal to anybody? She's pretty, sure; EBR is an immensely attractive woman, but HER CHARACTER IS SO ILLOGICAL, SELFISH, HYPOCRITICAL, AND INSUFFERABLE THAT IT ACTUALLY ANGERS ME WHEN SHE REACHES PEAK SELFISHNESS! She's got the potential to be a funny, selfless, heroic, upstanding heroine and she just... she just... fails, SO HARD. This had the potential to be a great episode and it just failed.
Enjoyed 2 or 3 scenes though. Next week looks pretty decent actually (minus flashbacks).
209
u/Megadog3 Apr 27 '17
She even had the audacity to tell Oliver "I thought we are done lying to each other" like bitch, you lied about the whole HELIX thing for weeks to Ollie and the team
139
u/iwishiwasamoose Apr 27 '17
Your comment made me go back and re-watch the final scene. Her exact words to Oliver were "I thought you were never going to lie to me again." She didn't say she wouldn't lie to him. It's just him who isn't supposed to lie to her.

14

She's pretty, sure; EBR is an immensely attractive woman
I know this is way outside of your actual point, but I thought she was cute when I first saw her flirting with Barry on Flash, but then her being annoying or part of forced romance made me not even really able to see or appreciate it.
Anyway, the scene in her apartment when she's not multicolored and bedazzled with enormous glasses, and just has the monotone dressed down utilitarian look? Stunning. She looked older but in the good, mature, woman/lady way, not geeky hacker sprite pixie way. Also some of her better acting I've seen in a while (in my opinion).

And the worst part about it all is that she actually gets an apology because they didn't support her plan that A) was actual treason B) she didn't even know all of the details of and C) didn't even work in the end and was pointless because Chase was in the base the entire time. People died so that she could accomplish nothing and feel good about it.
294
u/TheMegaWhopper Apr 27 '17
"You killed someone" - the girl who literally nuked a city.
102
96
u/iwishiwasamoose Apr 27 '17
In her defense, though I hate to defend her, Felicity's decision to nuke a city was made with a clock ticking with only moments to spare and was considered the lesser of two evils. She figuratively had a gun to her head. Helix Hacker Lady's decision to kill a guy with an elevator was a real choice. Nothing was forcing her to make a decision against a clock. She wanted the key and decided to send a guy zooming straight up and crashing straight down. She claimed it was an accident, but surely she knew death was a strong possibility when treating a human being like a bean in a maraca. Felicity made a tough choice, like the classic Trolley problem. Hacker Lady made an easy choice, like assaulting someone for their wallet.
40
Apr 27 '17
I don't think that's where she's being hypocritical - we all know the nuke was an impossible decision. But she's lied again and again, and no character is written well enough to call her out on it convincingly.

Helix Hacker Lady's
Diggle didn't know it either. I know I don't. Seriously, did they tell us? Especially if she's going to say stuff like, "I have a name!"
I always forgot Artemis, too, since she seemed bland and like she added nothing and (I always feel bad for saying this because I'm not saying I could do any better) couldn't really act to save her life. Like I've genuinely seen more captivating and engaging soap opera acting.
2
24
u/Demian_Dillers Apr 27 '17
She didn't nuke it, Dhark did, she chose the only place she could with the lesser number of casualties. I hate Felicity too but not let that blind us to the facts.

Literally wouldn't bother me if ANYBODY would call her out and be like "you know you are the most hypocritical bitch on the planet right?"
62
u/SockPenguin Apr 27 '17
Literally the first thing she did when officially working with Oliver and Dig out of Verdant's basement was try to stop Oliver going after someone on the list because he gave money to charity.
50
u/batty3108 Apr 27 '17
Literally every time Ollie wanted to do anything vaguely grey, it was "No, there has to be another way and if you don't find one it's because you're not trying hard enough because you're a bastard".
Why the hell hasn't Oliver called her on her shit? She has forfeited any right she ever had to judge him for the morally questionable things he did in the name of Saving His City.
7
u/greatness101 Apr 27 '17

This season alone has basically been, Oliver has a plan, and everyone else disagrees. Hell the Black Siren play was literally Oliver tell her don't fucking shoot, and she went behind...ohhhhhh.
Never mind. She has always been behind him because she was always doing things behind his back despite explicit instructions not to. SUPER GENIUS!!!
Holy shit, Felicity went from decent character to terrible ever since they made her a love interest. I like it when TV shows make original characters. Diggle has been a treat. But by god, it feels like Felicity went from quirky IT chick to a goddamn bitch.

No matter what we always will say Marc Guggenhaim with a taste of bitterness after season 4 and the whole Olicity fiasco

He's Adrian Chasing us. he made an amazing season only to turn it back into Olicity in the final few episodes. He's 10 steps ahead!

Imagine how many more lives would've been saved if the team didn't stop the Bratva from killing Chase in the limo

Okay , my only beef with using the Bratva is why not use ARGUS to do the same thing?

God Felicity was once again unbearable with the hypocrisy
"You didn't back my play" much like you didn't with Black siren
"You don't trust me" like you didn't with your cringey tech nerds.
God please Prometheus be the hero the city needs and kill her

Far from the greatest episodes of the season, but the Lance/Wildog story was the highlight. Can we please finish up this shitty Felicity stuff and get on with Prometheus' plot though?
Edit: Actually, this episode fucking sucked except for Lance and Rene.

Y'all saying Chase wasnt in the episode?? That mother fucker put himself in an arcade lol
The episode wasn't that bad. I'm cool with Felicity just leaving the show at this point.

So I didn't hate the episode or anything, and I guess it had a purpose, but maybe Felicity shouldn't be the center of episodes anymore. She just can't carry things.

Let me just plug this thing into our computers made by some infamous superhacker. There's no way he'll have bamboozled us!
Oh no, bamboozled again!
