Royal Rumble NASA "scientist" tries to sell invention to Reddit, gets iced

I think you are stretching the notion of "NASA scientist" a bit, professor, but I suppose if someone gives you a key to the Nabisco factory you're free to call yourself a Keebler Elf.
Fucking classic. I'm saving that.

I know this is completely unrelated but when I was a teen I worked within smelling distance of a nabisco factory where a disgruntled employee came back from break and opened up with a gun due to a lunch time argument. Luckily nobody was harmed but now I imagine all keebler elves are packing

Hmm, risking those kinds of credentials* to sell the latest fad diet device that will go nowhere. That's a bold strategy.

Does this even count as a fad diet device, since there's no actual diet? I mean, that might sound pedantic, but unhealthy and impossible to maintain fad diets usually return results in the first week or so that make people think that they failed the diet rather than the other way around. This is going to do nothing.

I think it's in the same category as those electrical stimulation machines that are supposed to exercise your abs without you having to get up off your fat lazy ass.
I would call it a "weight loss product." The conservative estimate for U.S. spending on weight loss is 40 billion dollars. We're a country of people looking for convenient, low-effort solutions.

You might want to fix the typos in "its literally science" and "get your's now." It leaves a bad impression.
Honestly, the typos seem the least of his worries.

I read his AMA sorted by Q&A. I expected a train wreck but he is not bad at all. Found his answers pretty interesting.

I'm trying to speed things up because the Reddit crowd is a smarter-than-average crowd.
Given that tens of millions of people use reddit, I'd say that the reddit crowd has about average intelligence. That's a huge sample size, so you're going to get a lot of people of varying intelligence on here; it should average out in the end.
That being said, this guy is most definitely not on the smart end of that scale.

For anyone curious, here's a manifesto written by a Redditor who took his class at UCI and has a lot to say.

I thought that username looked familiar! That 6B popcorn was pretty good. He gets called out in the AMA:
You are a computer science professor who can't even create a proper website. No wonder so many of your students claim you are the worst professor they've ever had.
It seems most of the low rating are from that one class, as others generally have favorable reviews. 🤔

So if I've been to Cape Canaveral and have seen the movie SpaceCamp...
Does that mean I can put "Have been involved with NASA since 1986" on the ads for my ice-water enema weight loss miracle cure?

Yes, but you might want to mention the water is ionized and come up with some magical woo-hoo device to make it seem like it's more alkaline so it can help improve health as well as shed that darn old belly fat.

They have been sent an email about this AMA, along with his department's personnel director at UC-Irvine. We'll see what they say.
I want to know what they say, but I'll forget all about this by Friday | Popcorn Problems

I'm a bot, bleep, bloop. Someone has linked to this thread from another place on reddit:

[r/uci] Wayne Hayes does an AMA, claiming to be a NASA "scientist" that hits the front page. Hordes of angry redditors chastise him for misconduct and stretching the truth.(x-post /r/SubredditDrama)
If you follow any of the above links, please respect the rules of reddit and don't vote in the other threads. (Info / ^Contact)

OK, here's my somewhat related story of a crazy person trying to sell me an anti-sexual-assault device. Yes; I said device.
I'm a dorm parent at a university and wore one of our Uni t-shirts to a local store. I was approached by a shy man and asked if I worked at the university, specifically in the dorms.
I'll spare you the blow by blow, but essentially, he wanted to be invited into the dorms to speak directly with students about using his device. I didn't ask, but he told me that you insert it. shudder
Anyway, he wouldn't leave me alone so I took his information while refusing to give him my own, and told him I'd reach out. That was 2 years ago. F that noise.
LifeProTip: an adult asking for access to a college dorm is the fastest way to identify yourself as a total creep, regardless of how pure you think your intentions are. He's not the only dude to do this sort of thing, and some guys are far more brazen and creepy. It's insane.
And in case you're wondering, I'm a 30-year old dude. I never thought I'd be creeped out by other guys, but it's now happened.

So if I use MS Paint to edit blue stuff in the shape of a life vest onto myself I'll lose weight?
Sign me the fuck up.

The title should've been "NASA 'scientist' tries to sell invention to reddit, gets the cold shoulder".

All I had to do was read the title of his AMA and I knew it would end up here.
