Normies took Caturday, monetized it, and called it LOLCATS, long before Pepe was Pepe.

What if I told you, memes never die?
52
u/CupBeEmpty Apr 01 '16
Pepe is the Jesus of memes
17
u/WhyNotPokeTheBees Apr 01 '16
He was taken from us, and then returned to lead us to meme greatness.

u/malilla Apr 01 '16
Actually, in Spanish speaking, "Pepe" is actually a nickname for José, "Chuy" is the nickname for Jesús, but close enough!

ESPN's 30 for 30 presents: 9gag.
The things you laughed at 15 years ago didn't go away. They just went to a retirement home.

Don't let the pessimists fool you, the Pepe is stronger than ever. Pepe's are the reserve memes of the internet.

As expected, fellow Cascadians know how the meme market works and are thus poised to profit.

Wow m1ddy, I think you have made your finest comic. This will hang in the Louvre some day.

u/pyram1de Apr 01 '16
Please no, why such humilliation? I deserve the Museè d'Orsay ;_;

u/CupBeEmpty Apr 01 '16
You deserve this but I was being generous.

u/pyram1de Apr 01 '16
Meh. As long as some dumbass hangs this in 4chan or Facebook non ironically I won't ask for anything more.

They recently closed one of their galleries. Where will I get my mix of bad art and the gently wafting smell of piss now?

Now this is the pinnacle.
I like the art style and colouring of the back ground!
How long did this take you to make?

Thanks! About 5/6 hours?

What do you mean, I browse r/ragecomics all the time WHO IS THIS HACKER 9GAG?
19
u/AtisNob Apr 01 '16
Only 2 ways, actually: find them on 9gag or find them at sites where 9gag steal them from. 9gag into creating ANY memes is like poland into space - cannot because absolutely cannot.
5
u/Flynamic Apr 01 '16
There actually is one (I think the only one) meme they invented. Nobody uses it though.

Just a question, why does the whole internet keep bashing 9Gag?
336
u/pyram1de Apr 01 '16
In a nutshell: stealing content from everywhere, watermarking it branding it as their own and making inmense profits from that without giving the slightest credit. And terrible comment sections.

I love when this happens (and it happens quite a bit). It's like some sort of weird postmodern performance art, where content goes from robot to human to robot to human in a game of ontological telephone.

u/ethanolin Apr 01 '16
And there was some content they took from r/theButton that got a lot of 'positive' attention on 9gag. They took Reddit's inside 2015 April Fools' day joke and somehow it got positive reception on their platform. So either 1) certain content is pushed on their site, 2) their userbase is...delusional (?) or 3) both.

We already knew it, the botting has been proven time and time again.
But it's still funny.

Check this out:
That is a (mostly) true story about an old website. 9gag is a newer version of Ebaums.
tl;dw - People getting paid for stealing content.

4chan doesn't take from Imgur. Most of the people on that site have no idea what it is. Imgur is more like a cancerous blob on Reddit.

I may be wrong but i feel like 4chan and reddit are on a more equal level, and Imgur is more like that weird guy reddit keeps around and pretends to be friends with just so he can use him.

Did you know that, according to the Wikipedia article about Polandball, 4chan contributed a lot to the creation of Polandball?
Polandball has its roots in an August 2009 "cyberwar" between Polish Internet users and the rest of the world on drawball.com. The website, which offers a virtual canvas, allows Internet users to draw whatever they want, and to draw over others' drawings. On the Internet in Poland, an idea was raised to draw the Polish flag on the ball, and thousands of Poles together managed to take over the drawball with a painting of white on top of red, with the word "POLSKA" written in the middle. After co-ordination from 4chan, this was then covered over by a giant swastika.

Here's the same thing but in a single image, I divided this into two to appease the Thumbnail fairy.
Websiteballs were the future all along, I don't know how we didn't realise this before.
Edit: Ayyy, thanks mystery gilding guy, in honour of 4chan's memory I will keep you anonymous.
Also, as requested, here are the same images linked above, outside the album:
