Does the website okcupid have an actual relationship with that sub or is it an unofficial gathering place for okcupid users?

The latter. And it's got a very... different vibe too it. I feel like "weird" sounds too mean. But it's not your regular subreddit.

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '16

I don't think it's mean to say it's weird.

Doesn't every regular user know each other in real life?

It comes down to this: Would you rather live in a society where you can say what you'd like, even if it might offend people, or would you rather be subject to constant scrutiny?

I mean, maybe I'm the paragon of humanity but I have no trouble avoiding calling people "fags", "cunts", and "niggers". I didn't realize it was that ridiculously high of a bar. Then again, if I was the paragon of humanity my barometers would be out of wack.

Look, racist slurs are one thing, but "misogynist"? There should be limits to what you can call someone.

17

u/flintisarock Mar 10 '16

I think I speak for all of reddit when I say: the only bad ones are the ones that apply to me.

Why not? Is there a new Godwin's Law?

Does there need to be a silly Internet law for you to understand? Fine.

LIATG's law: Comparing dumb shit to McCarthyism is dumb and wrong

u/Cylinsier Mar 09 '16

Twat's law: if you use "plebian" as an insult unironically, you are a twat.

What if I'm a Roman senator who wants to remind my social inferiors of their place, but I still feel that, at the end of the day, everyone is a Roman citizen in their own way?

But McCarthyism itself was some pretty dumb shit.

Shocker, a guy labelled as a TRPer not willing to call misogynistic bullshit misogynistic.

Just out of curiosity, how can you distinguish between entitlement with the basis in sexism, and that which is out of a narcissistic personality disorder?

u/Hypocritical_Oath Mar 10 '16 edited Mar 10 '16

You can't diagnose narcissism over the internet, so wiser to just assume they're assholes that are entitled.

While it is strange to see actual support staff respond that way, I can't make myself feel too badly for the guy.

Man, r/drama is like bizarro SRD (or is it the other way around?)

16

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '16

Srd is like office gossip, can be petty and catty but you still have to maintain some decor. r/drama is like being at the bars with your friends where you can be obnoxious as you want and the only consequences is everyone around you will judge and make fun of you if you act like too big of an idiot

I enjoy both especially when one links the other!! I love not being on a side!

It's not McCarthyism to call someone a communist who is actually a communist. The comparison doesn't quite work.

16

u/[deleted] Mar 09 '16

kinda is, it's not like McCarthyism was just about wildly accusing random people, it was also about persecuting people and making their lives hell just for having communist leanings/ties (including when it was true)

7

u/blackangelsdeathsong Mar 10 '16

Thats ironically the type of logic the McCarthyists used.

McCarthy did target some people who were actually communists, though

I don't think you want to make that your criterion here

Bunch of fucken white and black lines, arranged in such a way that I can infer linguistic meaning from them. More appearing as I jab my fallanges at the screen.

Free speech only applies to me. If you're offended, you're violating my free speech.

Also, most people who complain about everyone being offended are just mad they get called out for being dicks.

To add on to this, I get the whole 1st amendment vs principle of free speech thing, but I think really that only goes so far. This is definitely not a case where I would say "free speech" applies (because no doubt, that is EXACTLY what this person would say when told his rights were not being violated).

Every time I hear someone say, that "no one's 1st amendment rights are being violated", with a follow up saying "free speech goes beyond the amendment", we need to consider what the situation is. Is a misogynistic piece of shit being called out on their behavior? They absolutely should be called out on their behavior. There is no reason to show that such behavior will be tolerated in society. Someone loudmouth yam's contract with a news station gets cancelled after he says something racist about Mexican people? I don't see a problem here. A company fires a series of workers say that the working conditions for the company are terrible? Now we have a case of the principle of free speech but not the 1st amendment being relevant.

If you are going to kick mysoginistic douchebags off of OKC, you're not going to have a lot of male users left.

You might end up with an influx of female users, though, if your dating website wasn't a shithole quagmire of misogynistic douchecomments. At the very least, it would be an interesting differentiating point.

31

u/_sekhmet_ Mar 09 '16

You forgot the crucial "choose the casual sex option" step there. Most male users will just send you "What's up" or "hey beautiful" messages when you have long/short term dating checked. If you mark that you are looking for casual sex the creeps come running. Just today I got a message from a guy asking me for my email. I gave him a throw away one on a wimp. I now have an inbox filled with pictures of his dick. They are all terrible pictures too, they don't flatter his dick at all. There are also a lot of guys who send me messages like "Can I cum on your glasses?", "hey babe, wanna sit on my face?" and "Tits?"

For the most part there's nothing threatening, or hateful, just stupid. When guys send me messages like that, I just delete the message, block them, and get on with my life.

If you don't believe me, make a fake female account with stock photos and watch the "ey bby" messages roll in. It's kind of a shitty place.

I actually did do this a few years ago and I didn't get any of those kinds of messages. I got a bunch of annoying 'sup?' type messages but nothing raunchy.

or perhaps a very small number of male users contact many female users.
