So many redditors have completely deluded views on traffic laws to fit their hyper aggressive asshole driving styles.

That sub in general is pretty aggressive asshole dominated. Pretty often people get downvoted pretty heavily for pointing out someone is tailgating, even when not doing so would avoid an accident that's on camera.

I can't. Excessively slow meandering drivers have the capacity to endanger everyone as well. If you are merging onto a fast moving highway, please get up to speed before doing so. And also please don't go the speed limit or under in the left lane, yes you might technically be following the law, but people are going to dangerously swerve around you or tailgate you. Just go the speed that coincides with current traffic.

Roadcam is great for amateur road rule lawyering. Also, finding ways to blame the cammer.

Ahhh, good ol' MontrealDriving. He's a regular at r/roadcam, always a very strong opinion on someone's driving but objectively wrong 25% of the time and never backs down. A fountain of butter.

I got in an argument with him once and he responded by deleting all his comments and then going through my comment history downvoting everything. Great guy, not sure why he's not banned.

I'm pretty sure he's actually the alt of a guy who was banned a while back.

I can never understand the point of going through someone's history and downvoting everything. It takes a hell of a long time since they can't just do it from your overview, and if they've just been in an argument with someone then it's really obvious what's happening so it pretty much takes all the "people disagree with me" sting out of the downvote.

Unless they think people really really are going to get in a twist over one less karma per post.

If you've ever visited Montreal you would see that he is unfortunately not a rarity in the city. The drivers there are absurdly aggressive (partially as a function of the cartoonishly poor condition of many major roads.) It's a very congested city, driving-wise.

I had a friend who was hit by a car while crossing the street at a marked crosswalk, broad daylight, no snow or ice; he needed to get a plate put in his skull, although he's okay now. I myself was "hit" (really more bumped at slow speed, but there was contact) by an Escalade leaving a parking lot, because apparently coming to a full stop before you get on the road is an idea for crazy people.

Also, you can't legally turn right on a red light on the island of Montreal because if you could, no pedestrian could ever cross a street...

I drive here every day and it's really awful. People swerving out right in front of you to avoid a pothole giving their car a mild jolt, people turning left from the rightmost lane, people forcing you to slam on the brakes because they just step or roll out into the street without waiting for traffic to pass... And what's worse, the second the snow falls, everyone forgets what little they know about driving.

Thank God they made driving school mandatory and more expensive a few years ago. Just the year long financial commitment required has been weeding out some dangerous fools.

From the linked google map....Man they need to add a better merge lane there.

That whole road is just messed up. It's not even a freeway, there are stoplights half a mile in either direction! Why is it speed limit 50, just to give the cars a chance to accelerate a little bit before they have to come to a stop again right away? And an onramp that crosses a bike lane? It takes some serious guts to ride a bike in that neighborhood.

It's sad how many merge lanes in North America have very short on-ramps that immediately merge. Why don't they just extend it further? Even if it goes into the same area where the emergency lane would be, it's still better than having a short-ass merging lane.

There seems to be some confusion between yielding and merging. It is really annoying seeing someone stopped at the beginning of a merging lane. The gap you need to merge into traffic from a dead stop is huge. There are times when it is necessary, but I see it all too often when it is not.

I see the same sort of behavior at yield signs. Too many drivers consider it a stop sign. They stop and then look for an opening. Yield signs are usually in spots where you can see oncoming traffic as you approach it. If it is clear, then no reason to stop. If not then you must yield. When I'm behind you and we are approaching a yield sign with no oncoming traffic, if you stop you are going to annoy me.

Yes I think the guy was being unfairly downvoted. He was right that stopping in a highway on ramp like that is not a smart thing to do. The whole point of a merge lane is for you to increase speed to match highway traffic. Obviously it doesn't excuse the guy who rear-ended him but still.

I mean, the guy's wrong to say that you never stop at a yield sign. That's the whole point of them is that they act as conditional stop signs. The cammed driver in the video, though, seemed to clearly be wrong stopping there, unless that on-ramp is horribly designed and there's no space to merge at speed.

The real asshole in this whole debacle is the dude who just rear-ends the fuck out of the stopped car. Who does that? Assholes, that's who.

People are always trying to get that extra second cut off their drive.

Omg you're telling me. I keep seeing people speed up towards traffic stopped at a red light thinking it'll turn green any time now and it doesn't. Then, surprise, they're all but humping the back bumper of the car in front of them wanting to go. It's not gonna help anything yet they do it every single time.

3

u/freefrogs Jan 11 '16

I would like the government to mandate that all new cars get a device installed that, when you do something stupid/aggressive in order to get ahead of someone, loudly points out to you when the person you cut off ends up sitting right next to you at a light a minute later.

"Hey, cutting that semi off saved you a whopping two seconds. Woooooow."

u/schplat Jan 11 '16

Heh, he would die in Austin never stopping for a yield. Especially if he ever had to turn into somewhere along 360. But yah. Yield means you have no right away against any other traffic. So go when safe, otherwise stop, and if you're involved in an accident, you will almost always be at fault for failure to yield.

u/freefrogs Jan 11 '16

Heads-up, the expression is actually "right of way", not "right away". For all intensive purposes I understand you, but it's a doggy dog world out there, and most people could care less.

2

u/SGTBrigand Jan 12 '16

You know, I alllllllmost questioned if "intensive purposes" was accidental, then I noticed the other two. Well played, sir; well played.

On the one hand, the driver clearly had space to get in at speed, although the bike lane would certainly freak me out.

On the other hand, so what? People do stupid things in cars all the time, and that wasn't very stupid, certainly not nearly as bad as merging slowly or into someone. A big part of being a safe driver is dealing with everyone else's little mistakes, not just saying "Well I followed the rules", and anyone who says they never make a mistake is a liar anyway.
