VERY stroNg openingscene. The movie itself was pretty cool too, but that openingscene was awesome!

It was okay but similarly to Conjuring didn't make a strong lasting impression which was very dissapointing for me since evil dead (especially Army of Darkness) were my favourite childhood movies. It felt like a generic horror movie with a bunch of references to some other movie which I personally find uninspiring and boring.

Did you like the first movie though? Or only the sequels? Because I feel like that can be said about the original as well.

Yeah, I prefer sequels (especially army of darkness which is more of a fantasy-adventure movie than straight horror).

I watched this for the third time last night. I really like it as a whole, but it is not a perfect film by any means.
Although I have seen and enjoyed the original evil dead films, I never watched them properly until a couple of years back. I think this made me more open to the new one and perhaps meant I could enjoy it for what it was.
There were several clichès in the film that could have been left out as well as times I got frustrated with the characters. I could easily overlook these though because the film was eerie and the gore convincing. I think the highlight for me was when it rained blood, it just looked so awesome and I can't imagine many films could pull that off.

I really like it as a horror movie, I think it's really well done and has genuinely scary parts. But I don't like to think of it as an Evil Dead movie because it just doesn't have that certain dash of humor and insanity that the originals have. It really is a good modern horror movie with some great scenes and pretty awesome ending, but I guess what I'm getting at is... you need Bruce Campbell if you're going to capture the true spirit of the Evil Dead. I love the new show!

Although it's a remake, it fits better in splatter horror than the campy horror of the originals. I really enjoyed how they focused on pain and suffering more than body count. Eric and Olivia made the suffering much more visceral. It's also the first movie I saw where they were ballsy enough to allow the protagonist to get away with animal cruelty. Then the loss of the hand sequence had a cringe factor that I haven't felt since 127 hours. These disturbing themes and sequences definitely sat with me well after the movie.

I enjoyed it for the most part, but something felt off. For some reason I feel like Eric should've been the main protagonist. In many ways he fits the bill within the Evil Dead universe, and there was potential for a stronger ending with him. I could never really get on board with Mia.

I interpreted it as them trying to make you think he was the main character, just as the original has a male lead, but then subverting those expectations by changing it to Mia after she's been infected for most of the movie. Which I really loved.

See, I thought David, Mia's brother was being set up as the typical male lead, with Eric as a weaker side character. After the plot started hitting its beats though, I really felt Eric and Ash had some similarities, and thought his arc would've made him come through as the main in the end. I just didn't get much satisfaction out of Mia's story, because over the course of the film it didn't feel like she earned it as much as the others. I understand the drug metaphor, but it just didn't work for me. We never got to see how she dealt with the situation (because much of the time she was the situation), so nothing built up for me to root for. Anyway, just my take. I did like it, but some stuff like this kept me from loving it.

It was a fun gore flick until the whole car battery, needle, moon magic, happy ending.

Anyone else notice they took the original movie and made it about getting through the different stages of withdrawal from addiction? I'm not am addict and never was but I picked up on it real quick.

You mean, like aside from the very obvious and overt way in which they had Mia there to literally withdraw from heroin? Or was there more subtle stuff? The only thing I can think of is the burning hot water, which is maybe related to feeling like you're burning and freezing at the same time, but that didn't seem like it was played very well if that's what it was going for. Nothing else seems to be representative of a common symptom of withdrawal, but I've also never been a drug addict, so I don't know.

It's one of my go-to movies when I need some background noise.
And when you watch it multiple times, you notice the little touches that pay homage to the original series.
Like when the car first drives up and you can faintly hear the "JOOOOIIN USSS."
Or how the image of the Taker of Souls looks like the classic movie poster for the original.
Little touches like these show the filmmakers respect the original and aren't just looking for a cheap buck.

I loved it. Best film in the franchise in my opinion, the film Raimi wanted to make all those years ago.
With the TV show now out I really hope we get that planned crossover with Mia and Ash. End the franchise on a brilliant high.

Those are my thoughts about it too. It just didn't feel as iconic as the originals.

I'm probably gonna get yelled at for this, but, I think it's the best horror remake that has been done so far. I'm a huge fan of the original and I think this is the movie Raimi wanted to make originally.
