Being notoriously bad at taking criticism is another fairly common trait amongst etertainers, I'd say
12
u/StarrTheSquirrel Sep 10 '15
People are calling him the "thought police" because people got mad at HIM for a random 10 year old child that laughed during a podcast, and he didnt like that. Thats not criticism, thats stupidity.
3
u/erythro Sep 11 '15
people got mad at HIM for a random 10 year old child that laughed during a podcast
That didn't happen. The comments weren't annoyed with tb, and tb was asked because they were mean to her, not because they criticised him.
9
u/Redhavok Sep 11 '15
I think his issue is that his form of criticism is essentially a roast. Rather than saying "I didn't find the graphics up to par with modern standards" he would say "this game looks like it has been pieced together with remnants of Elton Johns anus and glued together with the remaining excrement, what a fucking terrible design", or something like that. He doesn't hold back and just say it how it is, because that isn't as entertaining. In doing so, he opens himself up to equal criticism, the first guy might get a "well I don't really agree, but I see where he is coming from", but TB would get foaming-mouth rage and angst.

I've seen lots of his videos actually, and I don't hate him, I am actually subscribed to him, I was just pointing out the problem he has given himself. It's a classic case of 'asking for it'

u/Ace-O-Matic Sep 10 '15
Pretty sure it wasn't the issue with people criticizing him, but rather because internet autists went full retard over a kid's laughter in a recording of a live panel. It's a live panel, what the fuck do you expect?
Which while sitting down and ranting off about it is probably the least productive format of dealing with it, it's understandable when you realize the majority of your audience are a bunch of fuckheads.
5
u/aj_thenoob Sep 10 '15
It's the fact that that podcast wasn't for a 9 year old or whatever. Language, games etc.
At around 51:45 someone said "this is not the Pewdiepie panel" because the kid was heckling and interrupting, so it was something to get a bit annoyed over.
Bad reactions on both sides.
2
u/Ace-O-Matic Sep 10 '15
If you don't want to hear an annoying audience, don't watch a live panel recording. Same shit with the hecklers happened at Cox-con's recordings, except it was some basement dwelling manchild instead of an actual child.
6
u/aj_thenoob Sep 10 '15
I don't watch TB or any gaming podcast (why do people watch these?) but I personally was annoyed. If that's what it is usually like so be it. Just my observation.

It's mentioned in the thread, but I have always wondered why TB never hired a Community person. This past year or so has been hell for him, why not invest some money into improving your mental health, and community outreach, by hiring someone specifically to manage it?
Oh, he probably can't afford to spend the cash when he has to have the best pc possible. Because how dare a game hit 59 fps instead of his usual 240 or whatever he has to have.
I say this as a fan going back to his Terraria series with Jesse Cox.
Always enjoyed Jesse more anyways.

He does have a PR guy https://twitter.com/totalbiscuit/status/533601738256056320 which makes me wonder, is the PR guy bad at his job or does TB ignore him.

u/Janvs Sep 10 '15
I try to stay out of TB drama these days as much as possible because I don't really know anything about the guy, but it's pretty fucking obvious that the dude needs to leave social media to the professionals.

You hit returns that are very diminishing at the pricepoint he is at. He owns dual Titan X cards. There is no reason to use a Titan X at all, a 980Ti (the next card down) will get within 5fps in games and costs ~$680 compared to the $~990 price point of the Titan X. If all you cared about was FPS for the money you'd just get a third 980Ti at that point. Titan X is like $1000 cognac, you own it just to own it.

At least for fighting games the framerate needs to be consistent. Dropping a frame here or there is huge and can make you lose games.

He makes many complaints about the community being Toxic
He's all to happy to indulge that toxicity when it suits his purposes, as well.
The problem with TB is that he's incredibly thin-skinned (he has admitted this on more than one occasion) and has an ego that needs feeding. It can only ever lead to disaster if he's not somehow reigned in by someone who knows something about PR.

I play pc games, but the kinds of games I play don't require 60 fps. I'm more of a tycoon guy. Things like CK2, or Civ. On the rare occurrence I play a shooter or something it's usually on a console just due to the fact I've never been able to get comfortable using WASD to move. I blame it on my big hands.
There's also the problem with him stating often that if a game comes on console it's hardly worth playing.

I was watching him last night (to get an idea of the metadrama, here in SRD)
He really really does drone on. Maybe he thinks that being long winded is a mark of intelligence?
Anyway, my take on the meta:
Compared to the very few, very British, youtube gamer personalities [Edit: that I follow] (Frankieonpc, Many a True Nerd, Jim Question), Total Biscuit seems to be "more of the same", with a tablespoon of "I'm very important and smart" thrown in.
BUT. I haven't been this deep in fanboyishness since the PS3 Vs. Xbox wars.
Like... there is no fucking middle ground. Either TB is the worst thing to happen to the world since the Chicxulub crater was made, or he's the enlightenment and hope of humanity Double Christ our Super Lord and Ultra Savior.
It all makes me feel young again. Stupid and young, but young nonetheless.
20
Sep 10 '15
I generally like TB's stuff but he really does go on for far too long. I don't want to watch a 50 minute video on a topic that has been covered many times before, or some stupid drama that he could probably cover in 5 minutes. I don't mind the occasional longer video but he puts out so much stuff that I don't know how anyone has the time to watch all of it.
And he seems like he's probably a decent enough person IRL, but he's just so terrible with social media. I'm pretty sure he just enjoys annoying people and getting into childish squabbles but doesn't want to admit it.

u/Dargus007 Sep 10 '15
I somehow get a strong sense that I would HATE him as GM for D&D, but very much enjoy hanging out at the bar.

It's threads like these that inda make me happy SRDD exists. Instead of talking about the drama at hand, it always turns into and anti-TB circlejerk. Now I have no particular love for the guy. Not even subscribed to him. But Jesus Christ people. Mentioning Totalbiscuit here is like mentioning Sarkeesian in KiA. It creates 4 comments on the discussion on what they said or did. Then everything else is what I hate about that person. Hate the drama, not the person.

They shouldn't break the rules then. DJB may be a bit over zealous and acidic, but the rules are clearly spelled out. If you break the rules, then you will get called out on it. It keeps r/warhammer a place with good pictures and decent discussion. I think banning meme posts, newb posts and spam is perfectly acceptable.
DJB gets downvoted whether he is being perfectly nice and reasonable or angry and rude. People just love to hate him at this point. And he really doesn't care.

He has one of these blow outs every 6 or so months, i think he has quit reddit a good 3-4 times by now and was at one point banned for brigading by getting his twitter fans to come vote against people arguing with him.
The last big blowout was when he posted some stupid rant about a thor comic that took the piss out of gamer gate and he started screaming about how politics has no place at all in video games (politics that he disagrees with i should point out).
Then his former friends at the Yogscast told him to grow up and he publicly started arguing with them.
Basically the guy says he hates drama but he sure as fuck loves creating it.

https://youtu.be/TwVeHMdm5EQ?t=253https://youtu.be/TwVeHMdm5EQ?t=3505 - this is the actual issue, the child heckling the panel
It starts around here I think, you can hear the loud laugh in the audio for the next few minutes. I didn't watch the whole thing.Edit 3: I am very wrong. See this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/Cynicalbrit/comments/3kf8qq/in_defense_of_the_subreddit_on_collective/What people were complaining about was caused by a REALLY terrible recording space. They are in a small room in a hotel, and the backdrop is a thing black sheet. There is absolutely NO conditioning or dampening here, and the laugh is very audible because they are using cardioid dynamic mics and (this is speculation at this point) I think Cox's mic had to be very hot to pick up his voice, as he was the furthest away and still quiet.
I don't know much about the drama or what laugh people are complaining about, but I can tell you from an audio engineering standpoint, that laugh would be a nightmare to mix around if this were a recorded performance of any kind.
This is why we use directional mics on recorded performances, so they don't pick up audience noise.
edit for clarity, i got interrupted when typing a couple sentences
edit2: just watched another 10 minutes of it.. that female loud laugh is definitely it but honestly its not that bad.... definitely mountains out of molehills here.
2
u/frostysauce Sep 11 '15
the laugh is very audible because they are using cardioid dynamic mics
This is why we use directional mics on recorded performances, so they don't pick up audience noise
Cardioid pattern microphones are directional, they record things in front of the diaphragm.
1
Sep 11 '15
Cardioid mics pic up a good amount of audio from the sides and back. You are thinking of uni-directional mics, which pick up sound from where they are pointed. See this article for illustrations of the polar patterns for mics that I am referencing. The cardioid pattern illustration uses the SM58, the same one being used in the video. They are notorious for picking up a lot when they aren't properly set up, and as you can see here that was an issue.
The cardioid pattern is good for picking up groups, but they likely used it here because SM58s are easily obtained, proven and durable.

Sep 10 '15
Yeah, to be honest it's not bad considering that A) It's entirely likely it was a volunteer working a system s/he knew little about B) The room is very hot (acoustically) C) the setup was probably just the 4 SM58s into a 6 channel mixer and then recorded. It could have used a compressor at the minimum, but when you have so many panels going on, the budget gets tight.
You gotta use what you have, and this is one of the side effects of using the bare minimum, excessive audience noise, volume and clipping issues.
4
Sep 11 '15
Sounds like an out of place laughter track from a sitcom. Not what I'd call offensive but I can see how it might be distracting for somebody watching the whole podcast.

Sep 10 '15
A video game critic made a podcast. The podcast was recorded in a small room with non-directional mics and no sound dampening. The mics therefore picked up the sound from a laughing youngster in the front row. People complained about said laughter. The video game critic told his fanbase they are assholes. The fanbase told the video game critic to calm down. Enter the "you calm down" "no YOU calm down!" phase. The video game critics wife domain banned reddit from the household.
So I think that was relatively free of editorialization, so now is the time for opinions: all of these people are crazy.
