mod post Removal of the Selfie Sunday Megathread

It has come to our attention that selfies from the selfie Sunday mega thread have been leaked and spread to the rest of Reddit with ‘malicious’ intent. Naturally this isn’t what we want to be represented as; it is not causal or welcoming to anyone. Most of all, it is not remembering the human nor is it respecting anonymity/privacy and lastly, it is not in the spirit of conversation. Even if these seflies were posted with permission in jest, it is near impossible to portray that to everyone through text alone.

We have always wanted this place to be welcoming and accepting of everyone and everything and have put together Megathreads to try to cover the bases (vent Megathread not being causal but added to because it was needed). However, as mods of /r/CasualConversation we only have control over one sub instead of thousands, and as such we need to take action and protect our users when we can. Unfortunately, this entails removing the selfie threads.

One would argue that posting a selfie doesn’t merit personal information (it is one that we have heard many times over), it shouldn’t be a big issue if they get posted. However, It takes only one troll/angry user in the future to open up your profiles and view the images you have posted. At that very moment, the angry user has a face to the profile and can post it or save it to wherever. Some photos are direct ports from Facebook profile pictures, and that’s just a reverse google search away from being really dangerous with dire consequences. Doxxing (going through peoples history to compile information) has caused several significant problems for people, the first one that comes to mind is the /r/wow incident where someone almost lost their job because of reddit.

The harassment levels from PM’s were quite high. People were getting harassing and Creepy PM’s based solely around their selfies (self-explanatory).

We will be removing ‘selfie’ threads as we always have. Those who try to go around it and make a type of selfie thread will be given a stern warning and further offense may result in a ban. We do keep track of when posts get removed for belonging in the megathreads or for being a selfie thread.

Now get on to conversing you silly casual folks. :}

yay

This is a very well written post.

Sad to see people do stuff like that. I always liked to see the pretty people of CC. :\

u/Quick_man Jun 08 '15

Yeah, there was also a fluctuation of users in the sub when the selfies were up. They weren't commenting or posting but just lurking. Also, thank you for the complement of my writing. :)

8

u/your_mind_aches Jun 08 '15

Lol I posted in the selfie thread once. I'm pretty glad I won't be under pressure to do it again

3

u/outerdrive313 Jun 09 '15

Now you can PM selfies to me!! Woohoo!!!

4

u/jaygreen88 Jun 09 '15

complement of my writing

the irony

2

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '15

Probably some stupid sub got involved or it ended up in r/all

u/FakeKitten Jun 08 '15

I would quite often look at the selfie threads but not post or comment on them. I want to compliment people but didn't want to sound creepy :P

10

u/outerdrive313 Jun 08 '15

Not gonna lie. I was pissed at first. I looked forward to every Sunday and seeing the faces every week. But the safety of everyone here supercedes my want to see new pics of my friends every week. But I also think this is what happens when a sub grows as fast as this one has. The undesirables, creepers, pervs, freaks and the socially inept start coming in.

Now imagine if we were ever to become a default.

5

u/Quick_man Jun 08 '15

I appreciate how mature you are being about this. We expected a definite riot with removing the SS threads but were met with understanding. Comments like yours are what makes this community a good one, not necessarily liking something but understanding it is necessary in a mature way while considering the subs future and general well being.

5

u/outerdrive313 Jun 08 '15

Don't get me wrong, I'm still mumbling and shaking my fists at you guys. Well, not at you guys, but whichever a-holes decided to PM others about their selfies and the asshats. But it's all good.

1

u/ImmatureIntellect Jun 08 '15

I can't be upset with everyone reacting and writing so well. It's an unpleasant occurance, but I'm glad that the users and mods are on the same page regarding the reasoning behind it.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '15

I think the internet has been around long enough for most of us to know that putting your likeness on it can lead to a terrible experience.

It's a fun idea - don't get me wrong - but some people enjoy the dark side waayyy too much to encourage it.

Thanks for doing the right thing.

u/Quick_man Jun 08 '15

we all have, we all shudder at the thought

2

u/outerdrive313 Jun 08 '15

I don't haveta think it. Look at the chain of events. It's only gonna be a matter of time until the admins look at us and go "look at those CasualConversation folks. So open, welcome and inviting."

"Let's do it!"

All nod in agreement

4

u/puttysan Jun 08 '15

Nonononono

2

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '15

Seconded. Horrifying thought.

93

u/CallMeEzra Jun 08 '15

Can I post badly drawn selfies in its place?

If not that's cool too :3 Boo creepers~!

80

u/DragonGuardian Jun 08 '15

WE SHOULD TOTALLY HAVE A 'DRAW YOURSELF SUNDAY!'

1

u/Soluno Jun 09 '15

This should happen.

19

u/tizorres Jun 08 '15

no

22

u/CallMeEzra Jun 08 '15

Oh okay ;-;

7

u/Leakyradio Jun 08 '15

C'mon, it's Ezra!

4

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '15

Nah, it's better than him.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '15

I actually really like that picture and now I want to do one hahaha

4

u/CallMeEzra Jun 09 '15

Oh well thank you :3 I just found out recently I can draw on my note 3 and I've been having a blast responding to people's texts with small doodles.

7

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '15

This is actually a really fun idea:)

You're kind of a genius. I like you

7

u/CallMeEzra Jun 09 '15

You... are like a billion times better at this than I am.

u/TheNathanNS Jun 08 '15 edited Jun 08 '15

Don't want to sound rude, but this is exactly why I point blank refuse to show my face in any thread.

I often wondered how long it'd be before something like this happened.

EDIT: To the person who asked me if I knew what happened: (Because they deleted their comment something about someone on some make up sub posting before/after pics and having pics stolen and being made fun of)

To be honest, I do not know.

But I'm going to presume people were stealing other people's pics and either pretending to be them, or x-posting them to hate subreddits.

Hell, the other week someone on r/GrandTheftAutoV made it onto the R* newswire.

Someone stole their pics and posted them on r/FatPeopleHate and they brigaded r/GrandTheftAutoV.

Post on that here.

I'm going to assume it was pretty much the same thing. Maybe not to r/FatPeopleHate, maybe to other subs/websites.

I recall someone's before and after pics on some weight loss sub being used for one of those "DOCTORS HATE HER!!!!" adverts.

21

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '15

Why the hell does a subreddit exists that only hates on other people. Wtf seems so damn weird and disgusting, that people actually tease people for how they look...

8

u/IAMA_dragon-AMA Jun 08 '15

I...

With all due respect, have you ever seen most of society? A lot of fashion, especially women's fashion, is based off of "people who don't look like this are ugly and should be ridiculed."

Heck, a lot of people probably vote for whoever looks the best -- being taller, I've heard, causes a statistically-significant increase in popularity and/or desirability.

I don't think it's much of a stretch at all that people would create a subreddit based on ridicule.

1

u/aPlasticineSmile Jun 09 '15

I once posted a picture of my dog standing on my face to wake me up in a sub about dogs waking people, and was made fun of for my weight...last time i post a picture of me or anyone with two legs...

9

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '15

Can anyone fill me in on what happened? Also, something exactly like this happened in r/SkinCareAddiction. A girl with PCOS posted her before and after pictures of her struggle with acne and some horrible person cross posted it to r/fatpeoplehate where they were all making fun of her. It was awful.

4

u/PlsSpankMe Jun 08 '15

I won't put my face out there either, too much could go wrong.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '15

Like spankings, for example.

1

u/outerdrive313 Jun 09 '15

I like ya anyways...

1

u/PlsSpankMe Jun 09 '15

Thanks :)

1

u/outerdrive313 Jun 09 '15

How ya feeling?

4

u/DavidLuizshair Jun 08 '15

boooo u/Quick_man booooo

Fair enough really, seems like the best decision was made for all parties involved.

4

u/Quick_man Jun 08 '15

my name shows up so small there ;~;

3

u/PrivateSnuffy Jun 08 '15

because you're small_man

3

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '15

Don't listen to PrivateSnuffy, u/Quick_man! You'll always be big_man to me!

1

u/PrivateSnuffy Jun 08 '15

booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

1

u/DavidLuizshair Jun 08 '15

hey u/PrivateSnuffy are you saying booooo or booourns?

0

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '15

I was saying boo-urns

0

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '15

3

u/PrivateSnuffy Jun 08 '15

I always knew you knew how to party

2

u/DavidLuizshair Jun 08 '15

if u/Dissimulate did not know how to party, something would seriously be up.

28

u/LionGhost Jun 08 '15

This is really unfortunate. I enjoyed selfie sundays and seeing everyone's pretty faces. But of course, a couple assholes have to ruin it for everyone. Let's just respect each other, okay?

Also, thank you to the mods for making it a safe place for us.

0

u/outerdrive313 Jun 09 '15

Heya LG!

I was pissed too, but eventually I understood. But you can always trade selfies with me! We'll be each other's audience! What d'ya say?

19

u/tizorres Jun 08 '15

Great post, thanks mods.

22

u/bellemomma Jun 08 '15

Well put! thanks for taking our safety seriously, this is still and always will be my second favourite sub on all of Reddit. You are the best mods .. even if I don't ever wanna see your faces again :p

5

u/QuadrangularNipples Jun 08 '15

And I am your favorite user... right?!

4

u/bellemomma Jun 08 '15

ooooooooobviously

3

u/your_mind_aches Jun 08 '15

right now, probably

3

u/QuadrangularNipples Jun 08 '15

What did I do to be special for the moment?

0

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '15

4

u/QuadrangularNipples Jun 08 '15

Shhhh! no one knows!

3

u/your_mind_aches Jun 08 '15

lol whoops. Deleted it

18

u/imcognitionbitch Jun 08 '15

I feel like if you're going to put a selfie up on the internet, you're going to have to accept the consequences. :/

11

u/nillis Jun 08 '15

Or you know...people could not be mean?

6

u/13ROOKS Jun 09 '15

So people are mean and we get a content ban? Does nobody else see this as kinda ridiculous? If anything we should keep posting selfies to show them that their cruel and childish words don't bother us.

5

u/Quick_man Jun 09 '15

so you want to fight posting personal information with posting more personal information? Should we change selfie sunday to Credit Card number Sunday?

2

u/PrivateSnuffy Jun 09 '15

Not everyone is that mentally and emotionally strong though.

8

u/IAMA_dragon-AMA Jun 08 '15

That would be nice, but honestly, if you're posting something in a public forum, I don't think it's realistic at all to think yourself immune from people being dicks.

13

u/PrivateSnuffy Jun 08 '15

u/imcognitionbitch's theory is waaaaaaaaay more realistic

2

u/ThatDudeFromPlaces Jun 08 '15

so sad, but so true :/

2

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '15

In a perfect world. :(

0

u/WaitWhyNot Jun 09 '15

No sarcasm but it really is a shame we don't live in a perfect world.

14

u/FakeKitten Jun 08 '15

That's kinda sucky but makes sense, I don't know what I'm going to do with all my selfies though :P
why am I so tempted to reply to this with a selfie?

Musn'tpostselfie

5

u/CircleJerkAmbassador Jun 08 '15

Give 'em away as framed presents?

Snapchat update - send personal selfies through the mail!

4

u/aoife_reilly Jun 08 '15

You have lovely eye

11

u/moon_physics Jun 08 '15

Aw man, I never posted a selfie, but I really liked the threads and how positive and supportive everyone was. So terrible that people were being harassed, but I guess it's not too surprising, sadly. People really suck sometimes :(

6

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '15

The reason people troll is to elicit a response like this. Trolls win when we alter our behavior because of them.

2

u/penelopede Jun 08 '15

We've been on the fence about it for other reasons also so a little while now. So it's not a decision made completely from one person's ill-behavior but also for an interest in better conversations.

1

u/nillis Jun 08 '15

Awh - I loved Selfie Sunday and seeing what everyone was up to! Sucks that some people had to ruin it for everyone.

Sounds like the mods have made the right choice though - can we come up with a new sunday megathread to replace it?

2

u/Quick_man Jun 08 '15

The mods have been discussing things to do instead and something might be tried later this week

0

u/nillis Jun 08 '15

Oh exciting! Look forward to seeing it!

5

u/T-DotTerror Jun 08 '15

Surprised I never had one of those messages. Ah, well. Workin' for the Weekend III: Live to Work or Work to Live will be a memory forever.

This is also what happens when a subreddit gets big. Too many new people and subs = too many threats/trolls.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '15

I've been reading on and off throughout the day on this post and I must say, I am very happy and proud of this community for handling this major change so well. We knew this would be taking something big and fun away from the subreddit but, as was explained, it's done with only the best of intentions.

Thank you to all the wonderful users who are supporting of this.

1

u/outerdrive313 Jun 09 '15

Heya Cellist!! :))

1

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '15

It's been too long! How are ya? :D

1

u/outerdrive313 Jun 09 '15

Doing great thanks, just starting my day! How's my favorite Hawkeye ever doing?

2

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '15

Good to hear! And I'm doing pretty well myself. :) Staying busy and enjoying this awesome weather we've got going on.

2

u/neonyanderehotdogz Jun 12 '15

Why are so many Redditors assholes?

4

u/Misty_And_Maki-Chan Jun 08 '15

I don't even like selfies so... :/ But seriously, unfortunate to everyone who liked it :(

4

u/AndyThatSaysNi Jun 08 '15

Well written post

4

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '15

This is why we can't have nice things!

3

u/LexGonGiveItToYa Jun 08 '15

I admit, I really enjoyed the Selfie Sunday threads, both looking and participating in them, but if this is what needs to happen to prevent this kind of thing than happening, then make it so.

The thought of people leaking the pictures with malicious intent absolutely disgusts me though. Some people are fucking douchebags.

0

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '15

22

u/DragonGuardian Jun 08 '15

I wonder if I can take a picture with them...

2

u/IAMA_dragon-AMA Jun 08 '15

No, I don't think they're cameras.

0

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '15

9

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '15

Are you saying I have no form?

9

u/outerdrive313 Jun 08 '15

I for one, am in disagreement with your welcoming of these overlords. However, I consider you a friend and I will respect your right to your opinion.

8

u/puttysan Jun 08 '15

Always appease the overlords.

2

u/outerdrive313 Jun 08 '15

I HAVE SPOKEN!!

0

u/SilverSpooky Jun 08 '15

This quote was already in my head today, haha.

3

u/Carminho Jun 08 '15

Sad to see the thread go but props to you guys for acting quickly and trying to preserve the drama-free environment we got going here =) thanks!

3

u/His_Fordship Jun 08 '15

Having only lurked on CC for a short time, I was hesitant to participate in one of the 'selfie Sunday' threads for reasons mentioned above. It's a shame it had to come to this but it is certainly understandable.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '15

We hope it doesn't keep you from becoming more active! :)

0

u/His_Fordship Jun 09 '15

I'm sure it wont!, there is a much greater sense of community in this sub than any other I have been on :)

2

u/penea2 Jun 09 '15

Takes one dick to ruin it for everyone. >: (

Everyone, pitchforks out: ---------E

2

u/BarakatBadger Jun 08 '15

What about a selfie thread where we draw ourselves instead?

4

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '15

We have decided against this idea. Here's why:

-It wouldn't be intended to be an art contest, but it would turn into one as these things always do.

-There are other subs that would be a better fit for this idea like r/CreativeRoom or something that is more art oriented.

We do appreciate art, but not everyone has the talent, and we don't want to have another thread just to get compliments on our work rather than having more real discussions. While, we appreciate the suggestion, overall, this idea doesn't mesh well with the spirit of CasualConversation.

2

u/lazy_eye_of_sauron Jun 08 '15

Our mods are some of the best mods on reddit, it's a shame that someone had to go and hassle them by doing this.

That being said, there is always an inherent risk in posting pictures of yourself online. Sadly... This is one of them.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '15

Although I did enjoy the selfie thread, removing it is completely understandable. Thanks mods.

1

u/girluninterupted Jun 14 '15

I'm just a Golden Lab and don't care who finds me so long as they don't "pretend" to throw the ball. May I still post my selfie? I have pose able thumbs.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '15

What dick holes.

1

u/harcole Jun 28 '15

NAAAAAAAAAAA, I TOOK THE BEST SELFIES LATELY AND I CANT POST IT IN THE THREAD, SO LAMEEEEEEEE

"I think the problem Digg had is that it was a company that was built to be a company, and you could feel it in the product. The way you could criticize Reddit is that we weren't a company – we were all heart and no head for a long time. So I think it'd be really hard for me and for the team to kill Reddit in that way."

--Steve Huffman, CEO of Reddit, April 2023

1

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '15

That's... just extremely sad. :( I always looked forward to Selfie Sundays throughout the week. This just sucks. I understand why it needs to happen but it still sucks.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '15

People suck sometimes, really.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '15

Some people do - you and I don't!!! :)

1

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '15

If it's necesarry... ok :(

1

u/Baby_venomm Jun 08 '15

Thanks mods

1

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '15

Thanks for realizing its flaws and taking action!

1

u/IAMA_dragon-AMA Jun 08 '15

Ah, wonderful!

I don't think I know of a subreddit with a Selfie thread that hasn't eventually turned it into a complete shitstorm.

1

u/38spcAR Jun 09 '15

As far as I know, the r/okcupid one doesn't. But I've never posted, so maybe I'm just not experiencing the awful PMs everyone else is.

1

u/IAMA_dragon-AMA Jun 08 '15

Judging by the comments here, it would seem I'm in the minority of "I don't want to know who I'm talking to on the internet; that's why I don't use my real name, give out my email or address, or even use a trip on 4chan for any reason.

1

u/Bewan Jun 08 '15

So no more selfies at all in this sub anymore? I'm fine with it but I'm just confirming.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '15

That is correct. Any and all selfie threads will be removed and users will be warned.

Whenever there is any chance to exploit or troll people, all the damn trolls and assholes swoop in like scavengers, as if they constantly just look to fling shit. I like to be a bit of a troll too and stuff, but stuff like this just goes way too far. But I guess nothing on the Internet is safe, unless we make this a private sub.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '15

You know - when I first noticed that thread; I foresaw a problem with it exactly as stated.

You put a picture of yourself on the internet and you better be prepared for a crapstorm of negativity, immaturity, crazy talk and filthy comments.

Sad - but true.

I really enjoy this sub for it's "niceness" and the ability to maintain an upbeat, positive and mature conversation/discussion area. It's a shame there are others who saw fit to cause problems here.

Hope all of us "Casuals" don't let this get us down though. :)

Heads up into the light of goodness and happiness everyone! :)

Nana internet hug

1

u/MattyD95DXV2 Jun 08 '15

Such a shame but totally understandable. I spoke to some nice people thanks to the thread as well as meeting one very amazing friend. Hope all the selfie Sunday peeps are in good spirits.

1

u/ajree210 Jun 09 '15

Man, that really sucks. I enjoyed Selfie Sunday, whether I was posting or just seeing all the smiling faces.

But like others have said, the safety of everyone is more important. Selfieless Sundays it is!

1

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '15

What if we posted our own selfies threads? Would mods delete it? We're taking the risks on our selves fully knowing that people might take it with malicious intent

1

u/AquaRhapsody Jun 08 '15

That's very unfortunate to hear. It's a shame we can't have nice things.

May I ask what sub-reddits were targeting it?

1

u/GreggoryHouseMD Jun 08 '15

I'll start reading this, but first lemme take a selfie!

1

u/CobraFive Jun 09 '15

Im really sad about this. I had been building up my courage to try and post a selfie.

Why not just put a big disclamer at the top of the megathread? Explaining the risks, what has been happening and what could happen? And let people post if they're still OK with that.

1

u/tizorres Jun 09 '15

we did out a small disclaimer. No one read it.

u/derpingsince1999 Jun 09 '15

You see none if this is a problem when you are like me and ugly as fuck.

1

u/Sproose_Moose Jun 09 '15

That's sad. I like to comment occasionally but I'm too nervous to post myself on the net because of this very reason. We can't have anything nice!

1

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '15

I respect the decision you made but I have to strongly disagree on it. When you post anything about yourself to the internet, you are aware that it can and may be used against you maliciously. The simple solution us to not post something if you aren't ready to suffer the consequences. The fragile ones that got PM's and abused should never have posted, and it's not OUR fault that other people found malice.

Punishing us for others action to try save us is stupid, it's up to us to either not post because we don't want to, or post and deal with it. Are you saying because I've posted pictures of my jeep on r/Jeep I can be reverse searched and abused, meaning pictures of Jeeps on r/Jeep are now banned?

Poor decision mods but I can see you are trying to avoid drama, wich is fair enough.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '15

What was the malicious intent?

1

u/just_redditing Jun 09 '15

The golden age of CC is over.

0

u/[deleted] Jun 09 '15

Don't remove it all together. If it's something that this sub wants, then let it be. People know that anytime you post anything about yourself, you are opening yourself up to the consequences of those actions. Yes, people will send creepy PM's. This is the internet. It's what happens. If you aren't prepared for what may happen from posting a selfie, then don't post one. But everyone else should be able to participate...

It really is a shame since so many users looked forward to Selfie Sunday, but we want to keep the subreddit as safe and comfortable as we can for everyone. Aside from this particular issue that came up, there have been various reports of harassment and creepy PMs. It's been something that's been discussed among us for quite some time, certainly not a spring of the moment kinda thing.
