When Linus is gone, will Linux fall to the SJWs? Gender war bug found in /r/Linux's source code.

And if #2 were untrue then the number of women in non-Free software wouldn't be an order of magnitude higher than supposedly egalitarian Free Software land.
The number of women in non-free software is higher because many companies hire them to fulfill gender quotas.
This is probably why there aren't more women in linux.

i mean, who wouldn't want to make a career in an industry where your skill is constantly questioned and your experience belittled if you're not a man?
unrelated, but why don't

And on that note, can you BELIEVE that Stallman is still single? It's unbelievable! He's be quite the catch if you can find a GNU/Fishing line to use.

I can't seriously believe that you're mocking him for this. Feminists like you truly are scum of the Earth.

wow that went from "stating a personal choice" to "smugface" to "i'm literally saving humanity (with free software)" really fast

u/BCProgramming Mar 14 '15
I decided not to have children.
Realistically his choice was to shower regularly or hardly at all. Not being able to have children is just a reasonable consequence of that.

From the linked article:
People in the FOSS community are famous for masking more Machiavellian objectives under the guise of "be excellent to everyone", a timeworn phrase that is bandied about by the most power-hungry and bigoted individuals.
That's sarcasm, right? That's got to be sarcasm.

Mar 14 '15
There's an unusual split in the linux/FOSS world where there are the extreme libertarians (with many stalwarts making buckets of money during the dotcom boom back in the 90s) and the share everything hippies. Many of the hardcore linux users are exactly as socially awkward as you'd expect, and their rhetoric rivals GamerGate or r/atheism.

It's never stopped on Slashdot, and it never will for as long as that site exists, I think.

The article is a straight up spintastic hit piece on the Linux Foundation.
ITWire:
The so-called patch was written by Linux Foundation technical advisory board member Greg Kroah-Hartman, who is also an employee of the Foundation, and has the support of a number of kernel developers.
Now let's look at what another site, zdnet, describes Greg as:
This patch, which was written by leading Linux developer Greg Kroah-Hartman, was signed off by 60 developers and accepted into the kernel by Torvalds.
Wikipedia:
Greg Kroah-Hartman is a Linux kernel developer. He is the current Linux kernel maintainer for the -stable branch, the staging subsystem, USB, driver core, debugfs, kref, kobject, and the sysfs kernel subsystems, Userspace I/O (with Hans J. Koch), and TTY layer. He also created linux-hotplug, the udev project, and the Linux Driver Project. He worked for Novell in the SUSE Labs division and, as of 1 February 2012, works at the Linux Foundation.
tldr this was written by a guy who very well could fill Linus's shoes if he retires.

What's funny about this one is that to the best of my knowledge there is no accusation that Linus has said anything misogynist, racist, transphobic, homophobic, etc.
It seems like the decision to attack was made and the best reason anyone could come up with was "Uh... he's too much of a hardass, I guess?"
39
Mar 14 '15
It isn't an attack on Linus, it's just telling people to be nice when critiquing code. Granted Linus is known to be less than polite, but the author is the one framing it as an attack on Linus. There are plenty of assholes in the linux community, this probably applies to them more than Linus.
28
Mar 14 '15
Less than polite is a bit of an understatement. But it's also saved for the top level developers and project managers and then generally only for when serious fuck ups occur. It's not like I'll send a pull request with some shit code and Linus is gonna blast my ass.
2
Mar 14 '15
Linus had a literal dictatorial hand over this. He literally had to read and approve it, and basically implied it won't be binding, yet people still freak out somehow.
5
Mar 14 '15
I think people read the kernel mailing list and see the style of communication Linus has with some people. He directly calls something 'crap' or 'idiotic' if that's what it is in his eyes but directed at people he knows, not at random newbie contributors who might be scared off by that.
0
u/DblackRabbit Mar 14 '15
But it sets that its acceptable behavior to insult people in the code review, I not a child, if you think scolding me in a review is cool, I not going to stay on this project.
7
Mar 14 '15
Maybe this is a culture thing but to me, most of Linus' comments are a bit rude but not condescending. They are the opposite, actually: Linus respects the maintainers which is why he speaks to them without sugarcoating. If something is crap he says so, it's not his job to give developers a 'at least you have tried'-medal for writing shitty code.
-1
u/DblackRabbit Mar 14 '15 edited Mar 14 '15
There a difference from not sugar coating and taking about how someone should be retro actively aborted, if you think it's shit tell me, don't air that shit out, because we will have a problem.

Jesus fucking Christ, sometimes people can get a little to butt-hurt about Linus's antics but this is pathetic. If your not used to opensource this might seem weird (meetings publicly available, git, etc) so I'm happy to answer any questions you all have.

Linus can be a dick, something I don't think he would even deny. He's driven off at least one senior kernel dev with his antics and probably countless other people who see his behavior and don't even bother.

Linus can be a dick, something I don't think he would even deny. He's driven off at least one senior kernel dev with his antics and probably countless other people who see his behavior and don't even bother. Edit- So the person I was thinking of was Greg Kroah-Hartman himself, so I guess he only drove him to quit being a maintainer.
I think you're talking about Con Kolivas who quit after Linus chose Ingo Molnars scheduler, or perhaps Alan Cox who quit after this message: https://lkml.org/lkml/2009/7/28/373
Which I don't really think is that bad. Can't find any controversy that has caused Greg to quit.

u/Gudeldar Mar 14 '15 edited Mar 14 '15
You're right I was thinking of Cox. Not sure how I got my wires crossed and came up with Greg's name. And he wasn't even really that mean to Cox. But I still think Linus sets a bad example of what is acceptable behavior.

It's going to be a hard war to win. Most of our resources are already being used to destroy ethics in video game journalism. But I'm confident that the unstoppable force of cultural marxism will conquer all, as it has done in the past, and Linux too will fall to us.

Linus strikes me as the kind of person who respects technical excellence and little else. And you know what? That's precisely the kind of person we need controlling the kernel.
I know nothing about Linux. This is hilarious to me, I'm imagining the spice from Dune except as corn kernels.
2
u/DblackRabbit Mar 14 '15
I really don't like Linus, he is a large chunk of the traits I hate as a programmer and people act like those should be praised.
22
Mar 14 '15
The thing is, Linus is a pleasant person most of the time. Sure, he has strong opinions, but he has a way of sharing them that isn't grating. Until he feels someone is wasting his time.
The only reason he's known as a vitrolic person is because "Linus merges much needed documentation into Linux kernel" doesn't drive clicks to half-baked tech blogs as much as "Linus flips shit because of a pull request. You'll never believe what happened next!"
2
u/thejynxed Mar 19 '15
If he is what you hate as a programmer, I don't foresee you ever getting a job for Apple, Microsoft, etc ever, because those places are full of people just like Torvalds (and in the case of Microsoft, even worse than Torvalds).

Possibly they were confusing him with ESR, who was always pretty bad, and has gone full redditor in the last couple of decades.
2
u/superiority Mar 15 '15
But... ESR is not an influential person in either the FSF or the GNU Project. Unlike Stallman.
-1
Mar 15 '15
I don't know. You don't get to a CS degree without reading The Cathedral and The Bazaar. And doubly so for being on the board of a major FOSS lynchpin like GNU. Every member of the FSF board would take that call. That's enough influence to be heard.

God help us when Torvalds dies. The Kernel is as good as fucked, same goes for when RMS dies
Yeah ok, go on..
SJWs will run rampant and destroy everything that's left of the FSF and GNU.

I have a question. How could "SJW's" affect linux in any meaningful way? I really don't see how someone's views on social justice can affect a computer's OS.
