Nearly incomprehensible drama in /r/zen. "I don't know why you're quoting me saying something I never said, perhaps you're trying to make some point I'm oblivious to, perhaps you just had a stroke, I don't know."

Some great copy pasta in there

I think you convieniently forgot to read the next sentence and for that matter the rest of the book. How many Zen texts have you studied? Where is your evidence Dogen belongs to the same family that rejects meditation as being efficacious in bringing about enlightenment?

Have you read any of the various Dogen scholars who call B.S. on his various claims?

Or is all you've got is the first case of the Mumonkan?

Just kidding, I don't get it at all. Are you sure this really drama?

No? I saw this and was like wtf? Should I post this? is it drama? I don't even understand it. But the stroke line made it feasible. Plus it's funny because of the sub it's in and because I think it would require a couple years of reading zen writers to understand what is going on.

No, it's drama. It's just very mystical and esoteric drama.

Basically one guy thinks Doge rejects going to the moon as a way to better yourself, but another person disagrees about the texts which obviously says Doge goes to the moon.

after following r/zen for awhile, there's a few camps of people who browse that subreddit:

  • Those who believe meditation (and some other stuff) is apart of zen, and zen is apart of buddhism.

  • Those who believe meditation (and some other stuff) is apart of buddhism, which zen is not apart of.

  • Some mixes between those two

u/ewk and a few others (like u/oyf) are hugely in the camp that zen isn't apart of buddhism and are very obtuse about it in discussions. It makes for an interesting read whenever someone posts something that they disagree with.

The mods are keeping it up, so I guess it's drama.

This is the first time I actually read all of the linked thread for some reason...usually I wait till everyone on here has picked out the best quotes and enjoy the best parts. I don't know why I'm telling you this.

"...do you even meditate?"

My interpretation of the doctrine is better than your interpretation of the doctrine!

r/zen is dumb. It's a bunch of wannabe enlightened people trying to impress each other with cryptic comments. It's only value to Zen is as a caution to do the opposite.

I just started there and already I agree completely.

Considering that what most people know about zen is that "its more like watered down westernized Buddhism than regular Buddhism" and "you just have to sit around feeling peaceful, there are no real standards," one can only imagine.

u/TheIronMark Jul 07 '14

Agreed. I've read a couple of books and I still have no idea what it's about.

It's sad, but your right. Went there looking for a source for information, unsubbed because of the users (one in particular, who is here in this thread, who brings nothing to the table and REALLY REALLY should be banned from posting there).

I'm not sure they understand what Zen means...

Hey! I was just browsing this sub last night, didn't think anything I would say could really be that popcorn worthy. But I take it as I seez it.

The exploits of u/ewk are among the greatest ever chronicled on reddit. I love that guy. It's surprising to me that r/zen has some of the best drama on reddit.

Dude! How can you say that!

First, consider the history:

  1. A guy cutting a cat in half... because some guys are fighting over a cat! Double down drama!

  2. A Zen pope who tells people to prostrate themselves... and then kicks them in the head! Real Zen Patriarchs of the Southern Provinces.

  3. Zen Masters for a thousand years answering thousands of questions in the most bizarre and disconcerting styles! The Original Who's Line is it Anyway!

Now, mix in a bunch of church-going Buddhists who pretend they can bring their faith and their Message Pillow value system into the House of Zen and ka-blam! What subreddit could compete with that?
