(not that I have much of a choice)

Former WWE superstar! What makes my story interesting is the fact that I lost my leg to cancer at age 8. Nice to chat with you guys!!

Hey, Zach. Do you regret not ever entering a Royal Rumble?

Also, what was Vince's first reaction to you being a one-legged wrestler?

188

u/ZachGowen Apr 09 '14

I would've loved to have been in a Royal Rumble because I can't lose! Then I would main event wrestlemania every year....then the WWE stock would crash...so I don't think it's a great idea overall.

Vince signed me without knowing what I looked like. I would've loved to have been in his head when he saw me for the first time lol

u/DashFan686 Apr 09 '14

VKM: Good Evening Zach, Welcome to Titan Towers.

His mind: FUCK this is a biiiiig health risk

62

u/dragonsky Apr 09 '14

(don't stare at the leg, don't mention the leg, don't think about the leg)

So what do you leg about the WWE..think.. what do you THINK about the WWE ?

31

u/ZombieLoveChild Apr 09 '14 edited Apr 09 '14

Vinces reaction when he first saw Zach

No offense, Mr. Gowen! I enjoyed your time in WWE and a fair deal of your Indy work as well.

30

u/Doberman11 Apr 09 '14

Vince: "DAMMIT, JOHN, WHY DID YOU SIGN A ONE LEGGED KID!?"

Laurinitis: "You know, it would've be funny to see a one-legged man in an ass kicking contest! Hehehehe!"

Vince: "ARE YOU STUPID!? WHO THE HELL WOULD MAKE THAT ENTERTAINING!?"

Brock: "Hey, Vince! You wanted to talk something about TV?"

Minutes later

1

u/[deleted] Apr 11 '14

hello darkness, my old friend

7

u/washunter Apr 09 '14

What about that fake leg? Would that have counted for the Rumble?

26

u/watwait Apr 10 '14

Master heel move, Gowen is tossed out, then his fake leg is tossed at him.

9

u/FeetsBeneets Apr 10 '14

Not if he comes out without it. It's a can't lose strategy!

90

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '14

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE TIME YOU KNOCKED OUT BROCK

179

u/ZachGowen Apr 09 '14

Before the Smackdown! taping where we wrestled each other, Vince asked us to go over a spot where I would dive onto Brock from the inside of the ring to the floor. Brock was supposed to catch me then slam me on the ground. So we tried it out but I came in a little too hot, caught his chin on the right spot and put him to sleep right there! lmaooo Vince made fun of him and we ended up doing something else in the match

95

u/dragonsky Apr 09 '14

So if Brock ended the streak and you knocked about Brock...that can only mean that you put the 1 in 21-1

23

u/Doberman11 Apr 10 '14

Which 1?

19

u/ButINeverReallyLived Apr 10 '14

The 1 is his other leg.

27

u/pat52210 Apr 09 '14

what was he saying to brock? What was brocks reaction?

45

u/ZachGowen Apr 09 '14

I think Brock was pretty embarrassed!

25

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '14

THANK YOU ZACH

3

u/jefferino Apr 10 '14

CLAP CLAP CLAP-CLAP-CLAP

-1

u/lostdogma Apr 10 '14

Brock must have a glass jaw.

-2

u/[deleted] Apr 10 '14

he kind of does, i think its more like he has a small head to body size ratio and you need a really big head in order to absorb the shock of a ufc heavyweight's punch.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '14

Are you speaking in the third person?

14

u/ChiefEagle Apr 10 '14

He is speaking in Brock person.

75

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '14

My mum hates wrestling and never wants to hear anything about it, ever. I've always been a massive fan so she has inevitably noticed a few things in passing. She hates Hogan and doesn't know who ANYONE else is. She does however occasionally asks me, "How is that guy with one leg doing? I liked him."

So to finally answer her question, how are you doing?

80

u/ZachGowen Apr 09 '14

That's so cool!!! Tell her I said hello!

I'm doing better than I deserve to be! I love my life.

20

u/[deleted] Apr 10 '14

Thanks for the reply! She will genuinely be so happy!!

Edit: Downvoting substantial comments isn't going to get your question answered any sooner; please be adults about this.

2

u/ArmbarY2J Apr 14 '14

Adults in squared circle? I doubt that, nowt but hivemind here.

54

u/Baconated_Kayos Apr 09 '14

How did you feel in the WWE dressing room? Were the other guys nice and welcoming, or were there instances of you feeling threatened or shunned due to a feeling of "He's only here because his leg and not because he earned it"?

81

u/ZachGowen Apr 09 '14

The thing is, they welcomed me with open arms and were very nice to me! I felt so insecure about being there that I acted out in ways that were not becoming of a WWE superstar, that's when I got heat from the locker room

36

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '14

Not becoming like how?

85

u/ZachGowen Apr 09 '14

I felt so "less than" and not good enough that I over compensated in my attitudes and actions. I wasn't emotionally mature to handle the gift that was being handed to me. I hadn't sacrificed enough at that point.

43

u/inmynothing Apr 09 '14

So, typical 19 year old behavior, more or less?

51

u/TeamHeyman Apr 09 '14

Hi Zach, thank you for doing this AMA.

I was born with cerebral palsy, so watching you accomplish your goals, overcome obstacles, and proving doubters wrong was always inspirational for me to see every week on TV.

I'm sure plenty of other fans with disabilities have reached out to you over the years with similar feeling of gratitude. Any in particular that have stuck with you?

Thanks again. Forever a fan - Jonathan

78

u/ZachGowen Apr 09 '14

As weird as it sounds, I wasn't able to really appreciate the gravity of my story until 2011 when I heard Gregory Iron's story. He has cerebral palsy and was inspired to be a wrestler when he saw me on tv. When i heard the passion in his voice, it struck a chord in me. And now we travel the US and Canada as a tag team called The Handicapped Heroes. That association encouraged me to go from school to school sharing my story in the hopes of planting seeds of inspiration in some kids that really need it. And that's what I do today. I believe my sole reason for existing is to be of maximum service to God and to the people around me. I do that by sharing my story in various platforms: wrestling, speaking, documentary, etc.

Thank you for that question Jonathan

13

u/TeamHeyman Apr 09 '14

Thanks for the reply. It sounds like you found your reason for being on this Earth, and for that we're all grateful.

And now, I have some new tag team matches to go vid hunting for. :D

Take care, enjoy the rest of the AMA, and again... THANK YOU.

16

u/[deleted] Apr 10 '14

You're a cerebral assassin if you ask me.

14

u/TeamHeyman Apr 10 '14

That's literally the coolest pun I've heard about my diagnosis. Mad props.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 10 '14

That's what they call Triple H.

1

u/TeamHeyman Apr 10 '14

Yeah... I got that, LOL

43

u/AgentOrange24 Apr 09 '14

What would you rather wrestle: One Brock Lesnar sized duck or 100 duck sized Brock Lesnar?

91

u/ZachGowen Apr 09 '14

100 duck sized Brocks. I feel like my best opportunity would be to just goomba pogo stick stomp the crap out of the 100 duck sized Brock Lesnars.

56

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '14

6

u/twosoon22 Apr 10 '14

Damn it. That's perfect in so many ways..

1

u/rtwmusic1988 Apr 10 '14

“The darkness has come. Goddamn drunks going straight edge on the streets. Resortin’ to meth an’ shit. And now with no drunks there ain’t no bums. And without no bums there ain’t no motherfuckers to feed the ducks at the park. What’s a fucking town with no ducks, J-Tro? It’s nothin’! It ain’t nothin’! How’s a ni**a supposed to sort his shit out with no ducks?"

39

u/inmynothing Apr 10 '14

I know you're not signing off just yet, bit I'm heading out so I wanted to say:

Thanks again for joining us, Zach. Come back any time, you're always welcome.

And a special thanks to u/killhimalready for setting this up for us. Definitely a nice way to help take our minds off of the sad news today.

38

u/ZachGowen Apr 10 '14

Dude, this was so much fun thank you Steven!! Ya'll were incredibly hospitable and my brother was super accommodating in lining this up. He loves the reddits lol and so do i!

30

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '14

Hey Zach, this is Wreckingball from CLASH Wrestling. Welcome to Reddit & it's so cool that you're doing this AMA. Thanks again for the fun match back in November & looking forward to seeing you & Greg at CLASH on the 3rd.

So I gotta ask ya, what was the first thing you watched on the WWE Network?

34

u/ZachGowen Apr 09 '14

Randy! First match I watched on WWE Network was WCW Great American Bash 98 lol

3

u/HurricaneStiz Apr 10 '14

Clash to the Future was so much fun. You guys do a great job.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 10 '14

Holy shit Wrecking ball! Love you in Clash! When's the next event?

30

u/El_Zombie Apr 09 '14

So whats it like having your foot ripped off in front of thousands of people?

How does your dropkick hurt as much as someone with TWO legs?

69

u/ZachGowen Apr 09 '14

It was hilarious because Roddy Piper tried to rip the wrong leg off at first!

Dropkick hurts more according to the guys I work with. Science: all of the pressure is focused on less area.

140

u/ZachGowen Apr 09 '14

also: wrestling's fake.

101

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '14

That's it, fellas. The cat's out of the bag. Time to pack up and go home, we're done for.

39

u/inmynothing Apr 09 '14

My kayfabe hurts!

46

u/Tamjuk Apr 10 '14

[] (/ryback "Just like your leg!")

40

u/[deleted] Apr 10 '14

Well, looks like you won't be getting any bookings from Jim Cornette any time soon.

41

u/ZachGowen Apr 10 '14

lmaooooooooo

33

u/inmynothing Apr 09 '14

Blasphemy!

32

u/Tamjuk Apr 09 '14

[] (/stillreal)

14

u/SherrickM Apr 09 '14

If there ever was a wrestler who commanded suspension of disbelief more so than Rey Misterio fighting against guys the size of Kevin Nash, it's you fighting against The Big Show or Brock. It had to have been hilarious to be constantly praised for kicking their asses, or getting sympathy from non fans for getting picked on by the bigger guys.

13

u/Naweezy Apr 09 '14

ITS STILL REAL TO ME DAMMIT!

11

u/El_Zombie Apr 09 '14

You shut your mouth, Gowen. It's not fake >:[

4

u/mezcao Apr 10 '14

It's still real to me

1

u/[deleted] Apr 10 '14

what the fuck are you talking about you son of a bitch

13

u/Sharkboy247 Apr 09 '14

It was hilarious because Roddy Piper tried to rip the wrong leg off at first!

22

u/LesnarsBattleScream Apr 09 '14

I love how O'Haire just walks off with his arms up like "I ain't getting involved in that shit, Roddy"

9

u/zeppelin1023 Apr 10 '14

Sean O' Haire's reaction is the best thing ever.

3

u/ChiPhiMike Apr 10 '14

Why did you have to remind me of Mr. America?

28

u/jinzxzxzxz Apr 09 '14

How does it feel holding a victory over the man who beat the streak?

0

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '14

52

u/ZachGowen Apr 10 '14

Fired because of attitude issues

63

u/mezcao Apr 10 '14

I think you should of had a program with Cena, that surely would of helped you get an attitude adjustment

Would you ever go back if they asked? Do you still keep in touch with anyone in Connecticut?

1

u/sean998 Apr 10 '14

LMAO you didn't sugarcoat that did you lol.....

26

u/inmynothing Apr 09 '14

Zach, you tweeted about the Warrior. Mind sharing your favorite Warrior memory?

99

u/ZachGowen Apr 09 '14

I didn't have a dad growing up, I didn't care about comic books, or sports for the most part. My heroes and role models were The Ultimate Warrior, Hulk Hogan, and Macho Man Randy Savage. I could escape into the magical world of professional wrestling and not feel the pain of not having a dad or the pain of cancer or the pain of never really fitting in. This is what wrestling and more specifically the Ultimate Warrior provided for me. I'll always be grateful for him. I wish I couldve met him.

18

u/ZeroThreshold Apr 09 '14

Man, outside of the having cancer part, and not caring about comic books, I feel like I could have written this answer. (Except add Jake the Snake to the three you mentioned)

44

u/ZachGowen Apr 10 '14

We're all wrestling fans for a reason, cut from the same cloth dude

9

u/Jordan-311 Apr 09 '14

Sorry....that was just the sound of my heart breaking :,(

25

u/TheHans215 Apr 09 '14

What is your favorite breakfast cereal? If you could wrestle anybody once who would it be and why? What is the hardest part of your day?

48

u/ZachGowen Apr 09 '14

I don't eat breakfast.

Sabu is my dream opponent. He's a major reason on why I wanted to be a wrestler in the first place. I wanted to be the 1 legged Sabu. And if you see me live now at independent shows, you will see a huge Sabu influence in my style.

Hardest part of the sometimes is getting out of bed! But action is the answer for me today.

8

u/wiseguy541 Apr 10 '14

action is the answer for me today.

Boom!

4

u/NekoQT Apr 09 '14

Great now im gonna dream of you fighting Sabu.

Gotta say thats not really something i'd expect

8

u/UseYourIllusionII Apr 10 '14

Time to boot up EWR and start a blood feud!

1

u/TankSwan Apr 10 '14

I think it's about time I remove that tag on you about eating a hat if Low-Ki returns in 3 months...It's been like 6, Kind of disappointed :(

25

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '14

Hi Zach! Big fan of you work in the WWE in 2003.

Did you have any opponents that you did not like working with during your time in the WWE?

32

u/ZachGowen Apr 09 '14

I loved working with all of those guys! I don't think they felt the same about me tho...

6

u/[deleted] Apr 10 '14

That sucks to hear. You had more heart and passion than half the guys in the locker room.

And you knocked out Lesnar.

25

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '14

Zach!!! dude! you smashed open the BOSS LIVE on ppv, I know it wasn't meant to happen but what happened backstage? I know Vince likes to get hurt, was you in trouble or praised and dude you rock. Leon

43

u/ZachGowen Apr 09 '14

Thanks Leon! Vinve LOVED it!! (he's a maniac btw.)

He had the cameras roll while he was getting stapled up and cut a GREAT promo that never aired. I would love to see it.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 10 '14

Thanks bro!!

0

u/twinightstream7 Apr 10 '14

THIS is what's so great about shows like backstage pass!

5

u/ZeroThreshold Apr 10 '14

Yeah, I just re-watched that, and seeing the blood SPURT out of the side of Vince's head made me wince, haha. Dude is a friggin' nutcase!

24

u/LesnarsBattleScream Apr 09 '14

What was your reaction when you found out that John Laurinaitis had approached and attempted to sign the wrong one legged wrestler?

31

u/ZachGowen Apr 10 '14

well to be fair to John, how many 1 legged pro wrestlers are there?? lol, I thought it was hilarious. The guys that got signed, Steve Chamberland, is a great dude that raises money to donate prosthetics to people that can't afford them. I love that stuff.

edit: spelling of Steve's name

7

u/EviLiu Apr 10 '14

I've always heard this, but it's never clear if you were the right one or not. What happened to the other guy? Just let go?

13

u/ZachGowen Apr 10 '14

Yeah they signed Steve first, thinking he was me. Once they realized they had the wrong guy, they let him go and signed me up.

22

u/ssheridan97 Apr 09 '14

I love how good spirited you are about the whole only having one leg thing, I let out an audible laugh at your title. My question is, do you keep up with the current WWE product and if so, what's your favourite part about it?

93

u/ZachGowen Apr 09 '14

Bryan, Roman Reigns, Ambrose, Cena, Seth Rollins, Cesaro...ETC.

We're on the cusp of the next boom period. Boom periods in wrestling ALWAYS coincide with changes in technology: in the 50s it was TV, 80's = PPV, 90s = cable tv and now with the WWE switching over to the netflix model plus the influx of the best talent we've ever seen....forget about it.

It's an exciting time to be a wrestling fan.

14

u/TeamHeyman Apr 09 '14

Here here. The WWE Network has basically taken over my life.

7

u/IAmArique Apr 10 '14

Pretty much this. If I'm not watching YouTube videos, Netflix, or Live TV, I'm watching WWE Network.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 10 '14

fuck y'all niggas

  • from canada

10

u/HotPikachuSex Apr 10 '14

We're on the cusp of the next boom period.

The fact that I'm seeing so many non-wrestling fans on Facebook complaining about wrestling fans today makes me agree.

2

u/jimuni Apr 09 '14

Glad I'm not the only one that feels this way.

1

u/inmynothing Apr 10 '14

Same here. I made a thread about it last night, and got railed for even suggesting it. But truth is, these things happen in cycles. We might not get to Attitude level heights, but we're gonna see some growth IMO.

1

u/hiroki1998 Apr 10 '14

This is a great analogy, Zach!

18

u/Mr_Itch Apr 09 '14

Hi, Zach. Thanks for doing an AMA, right here in r/SquaredCircle

A long time ago, my housemate told me that in a bout of weirdness he once went to his brother and asked "Hey, bro. Remember Zach Gowen from Smackdown? Was that whole one-leg thing a work?"

My question to you today is; What was the weirdest thing a fan has said to you?

27

u/ZachGowen Apr 10 '14

Shhhh it is a work. All smoke and mirrors brother.

Fans for the most part are incredibly kind and sweet. Honestly, if you dig what I do and express that to me, that means the world to me. I'm still living my boyhood dream ya know?

18

u/Sharkboy247 Apr 09 '14

What was it like taking part in one of the most historic battle royals of all-time - The Kevin Nash Bound For Glory Open Invitational X-Division Gauntlet Battle Royal?

16

u/ZachGowen Apr 09 '14

Is that one of the most historic battle royals of all time tho?

11

u/Sharkboy247 Apr 10 '14

Shark Boy was in it, so yes. What was it like being part of it?

25

u/ZachGowen Apr 10 '14

Shell yeah.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 10 '14

I feel like Punk could really generate some heat working heel with you. That would be fun to see.

16

u/SuperLibre2000 Apr 09 '14

Being a professional wrestler, I assume you've been in a position where liberties were taken and frustrations have come to a head. My question is...

How do you, a one-legged man, fair in an ass-kicking contest?

106

u/ZachGowen Apr 10 '14

Think about this: it's a no win situation if you fight me. If you lose, you just got beat up by a guy with one leg. If you win.....congrats. You beat up a guy with one leg.

10

u/Dr_Underpants_Md Apr 10 '14

This is the best/funniest thing I've read on here thus far. Gracias, mi amigo.

1

u/machinegun55 Apr 10 '14

GOAT answer

15

u/brtdud7 Apr 09 '14

Zach, I remember the episode when you faced Brock on Smackdown (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1nJu2YmawAY) and I had a few questions

  1. Your mom was in the crowd there. What was it like having to tell your mother to let you get the hell beat out of you and she would be sitting ringside watching all of it happen (especially one of the hardest chair shots I've ever seen to someone's head and you bladed way too much)?

  2. At the same time, how did Lesnar react in creative to being told he would be beating the hell out of a one-legged kid while his mother screamed at him to leave her son alone? Did he have any reservations, like that was even too much for him or anything like that? Or was it just "that's what I'm here to do"

45

u/ZachGowen Apr 09 '14
  1. My mom was a fantastic sport and a helluva promo.

  2. Brock was always cool with me and took care of me 1000%. I love him forever for that. That's a testament to his professionalism and dedication.

→ More replies (4)

15

u/inmynothing Apr 09 '14

What does blading feel like? I cry at a paper cut.

29

u/ZachGowen Apr 10 '14

It's a pretty scary feeling. I've only done it a few times (the first time being on Smackdown in front of the world lol), wouldn't do it again. I'm a 31 year old father, I'm good on slicing my head open haha

13

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '14

How did you receive your offer to sign a deal with WWE and what was it like when you finally did?

25

u/ZachGowen Apr 09 '14

Johnny Ace called my house phone (remember those?) following a dark match I had with Truth Martini in TNA, which created a huge buzz within the industry.

13

u/JoeJustJoe Apr 09 '14

How awesome was it getting to do a segment on Smackdown with Sable seducing you?

26

u/ZachGowen Apr 10 '14

It was cool for me at the time..... but my partner Gregory Iron likes to pull it up on youtube from time to time just to embarrass me. It's pretty cringe-worthy hahaha

→ More replies (1)

12

u/SherrickM Apr 09 '14

Zach, you have said in the past that Vince gave you everything to fast...money, main events with Hogan, etc. What do you think about that occurring in other sports....the high school kid in the NBA, etc?

23

u/ZachGowen Apr 10 '14

It concerns me. I hate that big business is permeating into childhood.

→ More replies (1)

8

u/SherrickM Apr 09 '14

And as a followup, do you think if there had always been a more structured developmental system, that you may have not gone through the same meteoric rise and have passed through there and gotten used to the big stage first?

u/ZachGowen Apr 10 '14

Incredible. Vince and Steph were so inspiring to be around. Shane was really cool as well. One time we were at the studio in the wwe ring, and Shane busted out the crashpad. We almost had a game of P-I-G in trying to one up each other on the highspot-o-meter....WITH SHANE-O-MAC!! wtf

Do you wear any special gear or a normal ring boot? I am wondering if gets extra wear and tear, or if you need something better to help protect your leg.

15

u/ZachGowen Apr 09 '14

Just a regular wrestling boot! One side of the boot wears out faster because of my hopping, that's pretty much it. Good question

Sup Zach. In your RF video Shoot you mention you didn't have heat for your behavior , but now a few years later you mentioned that you had so much heat on you. What changed, how come you're admitting it now but you didn't back then? Thanks for doing this!

31

Just wanted to say,12 year old me was heart broken when you never made it into a video game, that would've been fucking amazing. My friends and I hung out and watched smackdown when your match w/ big show aired and promptly marked the hell out (just watched it again on youtube, still a very cool, overlooked moment in smackdown history)

29

u/ZachGowen Apr 10 '14

Thank you!! I'm heartbroken I never got in a game either :(

The story they gave me was that it was too hard to program me in because of how I hopped around the ring

11

u/pat52210 Apr 09 '14

Did you know of any wrestlers who were "belt marks"?

13

u/ZachGowen Apr 10 '14

ahahah yes

5

u/inmynothing Apr 10 '14

Forgive my ignorance, but what's a belt mark?

→ More replies (4)

11

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '14

Not that I'm implying he did, your time in the WWE was very memorable to me. Especially when you did this to Vince. But were there ever any people who felt that Vince was exploiting you?

Kind of like that South Park episode when people thought they were making fun of Timmy being in that band.

Great question. At the time I didn't feel that way because honestly, how could a 19 year old kid who grew up on WWF say no to anything VINCE MCMAHON himself proposes?? But I can say now that I wouldn't agree to half the stuff we did. I've gotten a little more assertive in my age :)

So that chair shot to Vince.... Bad blade job? Landed the wrong way? I remember watching that live and almost throwing up. That was some kind of gory....

20

u/ZachGowen Apr 10 '14

Vince had the chair turned the wrong way! That was not planned in anyway whatsoever!

How was John Cena backstage in the early days? Was he friendly, approachable, was he known for politics, etc.? And what do you think of his success?

22

u/ZachGowen Apr 10 '14

John was always well liked. He has that certain star quality...you notice when he comes into a room. His success isn't surprising to me in the least. I think you could make an argument that he's the greatest of all time. Not that I would, but you can make that argument. He's that impressive.

u/corey1031d Apr 09 '14

Just wanted to say I really enjoyed your interview on Shining Wizards a few weeks ago! One question, is it possible we'll ever see you in WWE, TNA or ROH again? Also, thoughts of Warriors passing?

6

u/ZachGowen Apr 09 '14

Thank you, they are great guys, Very possible you will see me in those rings again. I'm absolutely heartbroken over the man's passing.

6

u/whitelightninn Apr 09 '14

Whats its like working with Brock? Is he nice? Does he care about putting on good matches?

25

u/ZachGowen Apr 09 '14

Brock was always great to me. I think he gets a bad rap because he doesn't really fit into the "wrasslin' culture". I think he's a great dude and loved working with him. He cares about doing the best job he can do, no matter what arena he's competing in. The guy's a competitor.

5

u/TheUnbelievableMind Apr 09 '14

Did you watch Wrestlemania this past weekend? If so, what was your reaction to the ending of Brock/Taker?

5

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '14

Hey Zach! What was it like being managed by Steph and beating Big Show to win the contract?? And also what was it like beating good ole Vince?

23

u/ZachGowen Apr 09 '14

Amazing and surreal. I was a 19 year old kid in a candy store! I loved kicking Vince's head in (at the point where blood was shooting out of his head, I was thinking "are you f'n kidding me...") Incredible stuff I'll cherish forever. Vince has done more for me and my family than anyone will ever know.

5

u/I-Hated-the-twirl Apr 09 '14

When Brock lesnar tossed you off the stairs it scared the shit out of me. What was it like for you?

31

u/ZachGowen Apr 10 '14

I was concerned for the stuntman's health :)

5

u/Jizzlebutte Apr 09 '14

Given that you could clearly beat Brock Lesnar up in real life, was it hard to try and act afraid of him?

11

u/ZachGowen Apr 10 '14

Well, that's where the acting part of wrestling comes in. It's a gift and a curse really...

5

u/inmynothing Apr 09 '14

One last question: What's the most painful bump you took while in the WWE?

8

u/ZachGowen Apr 09 '14

I took the Foley nestea plunge on Smackdown once. That sucked.

3

u/Corabal Apr 09 '14

Any regrets about your WWE career, what would you have liked to have done?

13

u/ZachGowen Apr 10 '14

Naw man, no regrets. I couldn't ask for anything more. Dream come true.

Zach! Thanks for taking part in this AMA. What was it like working with Brock Lesnar in 2003? What is he like backstage? Also, as someone who has never been thrown down a flight of stairs, I'd like to know what that was like?

17

u/ZachGowen Apr 09 '14

Ask the stuntman who took the fall!

Hi I know you are a cancer survivor. Are you still in touch with any one from the hospital you were treated at?

5

u/ZachGowen Apr 10 '14

Yes! Children's Hospital of Michigan. I was trying to put together a fundraiser for the Oncology department but they seemed to sour on the idea of a wrestling show being the main force behind that. I hope to win them over and do it in the fall :)

3

u/Walrus_Songs Apr 09 '14

This is probably being asked a bunch of times, but how much did it hurt when Brock Lesnar through you down the stairs?

I know, kayfabe is dead and all that but fuck me if that didn't look completely legit.

20

u/ZachGowen Apr 10 '14

Ask the stuntman who took the fall.

2

u/Ellimem Apr 09 '14

Hey Zach, thanks for doing this AMA! I don't have a question, I just wanted to say that I am a big fan of yours. Have a good time on here, man!

2

u/ZachGowen Apr 10 '14

This has been awesome!!!

2

u/Pudie Apr 09 '14

Hey Zach! Thanks for the AMA!

How do you feel about the past week in wrestling? Did you watch Mania or any shows during the week? How do you feel about the streak ending, specifically by Brock?

2

u/DSaga Apr 09 '14

How'd you feel about your most recent ROH appearance against Matt Taven? As someone who wrestled in pre-Sinclair ROH, can you tell the differences between it then and now?

2

u/STorminNorman86 Apr 09 '14

Did the match with Vince get cut short because of his gaping head wound? It always seemed a little off that it ended the way it did. Big fan by the way.

7

u/ZachGowen Apr 10 '14

Thank you!! No, it went as planned. But it does look that way, with the finish coming out of nowhere. I really feel we should have done a better finish.

2

u/Helldozer72 Apr 09 '14

What was your time in JCW like?

5

u/ZachGowen Apr 10 '14

I love JCW. Incredibly passionate crowds. Great shows with over the top characters, it's almost a throwback to the wrestling I grew up on. I love it there.

Were u the wrong one legged wrestler Vince was referring to?

2

u/ZachGowen Apr 10 '14

No....well, I hope not ahahaha

2

u/bigtaterman Apr 09 '14

Did it hurt when Brock Lesnar beat the ever loving crap out of you?

9

u/ZachGowen Apr 10 '14

No. I attribute that to Brock's professionalism, the adrenaline of performing at Joe Louis Arena, and being 20 years old! Not sure how it would feel now tho lol

What was your overall opinion of WrestleMania XXX, if you saw it?

I'd rank it the 3rd best 'Mania ever, behind WM19 at the top, followed by WM20 (huge bias... I was there live @ The Garden).

4

u/ZachGowen Apr 10 '14

Where would you rank X7??? I would go X7, 3, then XXX.

what was brock like backstage

2

u/PurpleGato42 Apr 10 '14

Hey, Zack. I always wondered, how did it feel like to be pushed down the stairs by Brock Lesnar? Do you remember what you were thinking the seconds before going "A LONG WAY DOWN"?

2

u/Darthvire Apr 10 '14

Any favourite stories you would like to share? Ribs? Backstage shenanigans?

1

u/wesnotwes Apr 09 '14

What's the weirdest road story you have?

1

u/peaky01 Apr 09 '14

Who were the nice guys to you in the locker room? Who were the ones that wouldn't give you the time of day? Do you keep in contact with anyone in WWE anymore?

1

u/mrchiz Apr 09 '14

When you arrived in the WWE, was there any hazing at all? And were any of the veterans upset at the position you had, since you were fairly new to the business, and hadn't really paid your dues?

1

u/a_pubic_hair Apr 09 '14

What do you think about the work you've done for TCW and what they are doing?

2

u/ZachGowen Apr 10 '14

Love TCW and those guys. Hope to be back soon!

1

u/BananaSheet Apr 09 '14

What was your reaction to having your match with the Big Show where you were tagged with Stephanie billed as a 'Real' Handicap match?

1

What was your favorite Ultimate Warrior match/promo/interview?

2

Wrestlemania VI

1

u/the_future14 Apr 09 '14

What would you consider your career highlight?

1

u/Xecutor Apr 09 '14

Any plans on stepping back into the squared circle?

Is there anything that happened backstage that shocked you?

4

u/ZachGowen Apr 10 '14

I've actually never been busier with wrestling (or life in general for that matter)

I'm on the independent circuit on the weekends and doing inspirational speaking at schools during the week. I'll always be involved in wrestling in some shape or form.

1

u/mrchiz Apr 09 '14

Any funny backstage stories or ribs?

1

u/Thebotchedlegdrop Apr 09 '14

What was Brock like in your feud with him?

1

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '14

Hi Zach, thanks for doing this.

What was Vince's reaction when you almost killed him with that chair shot?

1

u/beef3344 Apr 09 '14

Thanks for stopping by Zach. Were you treated well by the other superstars in your short time in WWE? It seems like the vets like to give the young guys a bit of a hard time when they first come up, more so back in the day. Did you go through this?

1

u/Almostperfect505 Apr 09 '14

Hi Zack! What was it like backstage when you first arrived in the WWE?

1

u/Vram13 Apr 09 '14

How awkward was it when you kinda botched the chair kick, and busted Vince wide open?

1

u/HEELHousell Apr 09 '14

Hey Zach, welcome to Reddit! Two questions:

  1. Do you think Gregory Iron can succeed to the levels you did?

  2. Who pitched the initial feud between yourself and Mr. McMahon and what is it like working with him?
