2014 Reddit Kpop Census - Results

Hello all,

It's the moment you've all been waiting for... the results of the 2014 census are now out!

Link: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewanalytics?formkey=dGJ0VmN2Y3MzZkwwRXlBZmtNS1N0QWc6MQ (takes a few seconds to load)

Unfortunately I accidentally deleted the previous census' data when creating this census, but for those curious, in late 2012 our gender ratio was ~75% male and ~25% female, so we've become a lot more gender balanced! Additionally, if I remember correctly we didn't have as nearly a diverse population, ethnicity-wise, back in 2012 (AKA we now have a greater proportion of Asian people compared to white people).

In 2012 we also had around ~1300 responses and we had ~1800 responses this round.

Here is a graph of /r/kpop's favorite groups since the graph for that question cannot be displayed on the results page:

Enjoy reading through the results!

Who picked other for how long you've listened and WHY?

Yeah, I'm not sure why I even had that as an option - that's completely my fault.

One day, TRAX, one day.

Also, would it be possible to get a TRAX flair?

I waited eagerly for this.

Being Latin American, it massively bothers me that Central America js listed and then there's a Mexico option .Like, it annoys so so much. But, oh well.

7% of the sub is South American. Represent!!!!!1!11!one

I am happy with these results!!

Central America does not include Mexico according to Wikipedia, so I listed it separately. Sorry that it bothers you. The region breakdown is never going to be perfect.

Wow... I'm honestly surprised that so many of the participants were straight caucasian males. Although maybe I shouldn't be, considering that I am one haha.

This is reddit - most people on this website are straight caucasian males. I was actually pleasantly surprised to see a higher proportion of women and non-white people than I expected. If you compare r/kpop to other subreddits, we are generally much more diverse.

On the sexuality graph, I thought it said 84% of people were bisexual because it says bisexual to the right of the "straight" bar lol.

Also, is it really that many guys? 66%? really doesn't seem like it..

I'm actually curious as to why you got the impression that there aren't a lot of guys here - from the beginning, I always assumed that men were the majority here based on the voting patterns and comments (and the fact that reddit is overwhelmingly male), but that may not be the case for everyone.

Girl groups get upvoted here far more than boy groups do, even rookie/debuting groups. In comparison, rookie/debuting boy groups will get 4-5 upvotes total. Fiestar's language lesson videos always got a lot of upvotes despite not fitting in with the general theme of r/kpop, but I'm pretty sure that Hanbyul from Led Apple's Korean lesson videos never got posted at all.

Look at the chart of favorite groups and singers: Girl's Day, f(x), and Nine Muses have a disproportionate amount of votes compared to their real-life popularity. Out of the top 20 responses, only 6 are boy groups, and one of those is G-Dragon, who is basically listed twice since he's in Big Bang.

To add on to this - it's not that girl groups fans are necessarily male (I believe f(x) and SNSD have fanbases that are mostly women) but the girl groups that r/kpop likes generally do cater to male audiences moreso than female ones.
