People mad at an overly-obscure u/picturegame entry.
Alright, this one's going to need some context.
So about 4 hours ago someone started the account /u/picturegame and posted the first entry.
In brief, it's a game where commenters try to guess the image. Some variation of the name of the image is the password for the account, and whoever guesses it first takes over the account and posts the next picture. Fun, right?
Well, some clever Hans decided to post a picture of the earth, but instead of making the password "theearth" or something obvious, this person went with the counter-intuitive "oblatespheriod."
People weren't happy. This is just the most upvoted comment in the thread. There's more in there.
Also, it seems like it won't be long before someone completely ruins it. So there's that to look forward to.
Update 1: More anger over an obscure image
Update 2: And more over an anime-related image
Update 3: According to the sidebar over at /r/picturegame, people have been getting shadowbanned for using proxy servers to enter password guesses quicker. Also, mods plead for civility.
Final Edit: Had to blast out to the grocery store to stock up for Murder Storm 5000 here in New England. Game's up to Round 19 and each thread has some fun bickering and such in it. It's not huge drama, but boy is there a lot of it. Enjoy.

What's sad about it is that what should represent a profound appreciation for what a diverse group of people (with different bases of knowledge, different experiences, different expertise) can accomplish is instead "ermergerd this question isn't in my wheelhouse so it's bad."
The latest one was solved because someone studied in Spain and saw the act represented in the picture firsthand. That's awesome.
It's the same reason I love ARGs. It's amazing to see what can happen when you throw thousands of people from all different backgrounds at a problem and see what happens. But it has to be treated as collaborative, not "I can't get this particular question therefore fuck this."

What you point out actually seems to be working against the spirit of the game. The last round, Round 28, was solved in less than a minute after posting.

u/ky1e is actually one of our own. He, like some many others, has achieved what we're all hoping for.

There are people buzzing with hatred everywhere in that thread.
Come on you guys, it only took 30 minutes to find it, and it's just a silly fucking game.

and it's just a silly fucking game
if everyone thought that way, we would be eating a lot less popcorn

and it's just the silly fucking internet
That's where this kind of rational thinking leads. And we can't have both rationality and popcorn, so choose, u/Lieutenant_Rans!

Someone is seriously angry and demands that the "winner" shouldn't take more than 5 minutes to come up with a new picture. His reasoning?
the problem is, you've got people sitting at their keyboards...putting off doing all sorts of chores, errands, civic duties, etc....

You forgot the best bit!
they need to know when the next puzzle is posted
They NEED this! How dare you keep them waiting. People might die.

You know what this reminds me of? This is like a 3-legged race, only you don't get to choose your partner, and your partner keeps changing, and sometimes your partner is a fedora, and sometimes it's an impatient asshole.
This game requires cooperation. No one can have fun all by himself. And frankly, there are some people who are just not equipped to, ah, play well with others.
Which is awesome for us!

That cat picture was bullshit. The only reason it was found is because the person with the account gave out hints and inadvertently posted a better picture with a quote from the book. I stand by my drama.

I would pick four consecutive numbers from the first ten thousand digits of Pi, now that would be fun.

I'm suprised the game took off. I saw the original post early this morning in r/pics right after it was post and assumed that the default mobs would attack something interrupting their serious business.

A game like this on an even moderately sized forum is practically guaranteed to result in pedantry and angry recriminations.
On r/pics? people are going to knife fight IRL over this.

Picturegame can become a really great thing - but only if the mods can keep civility.
It'll have to be run as tight as some other ball comic and video game subs out there.

lol. The people getting angry over oblate spheroid are fucking useless, the OP gave a clue that it was the 'structure' of the image.
Image - Earth
Shape - Oblate Soheroid
Source - Wikipedia
Once again proves that people just like to get angry.

Just talked to you in modmail. That CSS stuff was pretty ridiculous. Good luck with the subreddit, I think if the account is saved once it is inevitably taken by a troll, the subreddit could be really fun. I want to see a round that lasts for like 5 days because it is so hard.

u/DaedalusMinion Feb 15 '14
Ah yes, the CSS was not my doing. I was having dinner when the other mod started working on the CSS, I didn't expect that they would do that.
We've made some plans.
Verify the account with one of our e-mails so it cannot be 'taken'.
30 Minute - 1 Hour deadline for the new post.
Reset and continue.
As for difficulty, I hope I wasn't insulting you or anyone in particular, it was just what I thought about that specific round. The only round I hated was that dumb shit drawing of a cat.

That's what you get if you let geeks play along. I'm surprised a troll hasn't gotten it right yet. That could be marvelous.
