Discussion Masters of Sex - 1x11 "Phallic Victories" - Episode Discussion

Season 1 Episode 11: Phallic Victories

Aired: December 8, 2013

Directed by Phil Abraham

Written by Amy Lippman

With Johnson no longer on his team, Masters accepts Libby's offer to help compile the study work for a hospital-wide presentation. But when Masters sees another doctor's presentation put his colleagues to sleep, he becomes determined to grab their attention even if it means pushing through provoking, but incomplete, research. Dr. DePaul and Johnson travel to a medical convention and DePaul opens up on why her work on the Pap smear is so important. And Virginia's ex-husband George returns to find Ethan Haas playing father to his children.

"You want to keep the title George, you got it. All I want is the job."

that line was so chilling.

Oh Haas... youre such a gem when you havent been drinking... Too bad this fantasy is going to blow up in your face before you even realize.

"There's always something to prove." Great line by Dr. Masters.

It really sums up his character arc through the series.

The scene with Lillian just broke my heart. Wonderfully done and Lizzy Caplan is divine.

Most of us came to the show for Sheen or Caplan, but the supporting cast is also really really strong too here.

Very interesting dynamic between Lillian and Virginia. Lillian is more of a stereotypical feminist, while Virginia is discovering her independence as she goes, all the while embracing her sexuality and beauty. Despite their different styles, they respect and encourage each other. I love this budding friendship.

I swear this show makes me both laugh and tear up every damn week. Thing is I really don't cry all that easily...I don't think.

This week it was Bill's devastating imaginary conversation with Virginia, the scene on the bus where Lillian tells Virginia about her illness, and that song at the end. "You Don't Know Me" is one of the greatest unrequited love songs ever written, and Caplan's rendition was so sad and tender.

Oh yeah, and when poor Libby was asking Bill, "did they fall in love?" oh, the look on his face. I really feel for him, torn between such a good, loving, kind person (Libby has "a smile in her voice"--loved that line) and another woman he's hopelessly in love with. Such brilliant acting all around with this show.

On a brighter note, the jokes back and forth between Virginia and Lillian were quietly hilarious..."I can't seem to get away from vibrators, can I?" Snork.

Virginia's singing at the end was just beautiful!

Oh man this is a tense episode.

Even the funniest part (Haas and the Ex arguing) was a bit tense.

Lol, trying to one up each other.

Haas: I can ride a horse like that. The Ex: I can ride bareback!

That last shot in the elevator overlayed with Johnson's singing- exquisite. Finally a shot for me that will stick with me. Balanced, beautiful, and poignantly sad especially given how great each of their SO's are.

I am not sure if they want us to start liking Ethan, but I don't really feel anything towards him, not really any empathy, my empathy lies with Bill. Really bloody clever writing.

Other then getting drunk and smacking Virginia, Ethan's really a solid guy.

My empathy is for him.

"You've got penis envy", did anyone else feel like Virginia was channeling her inner Jerry Seinfeld with that line?

Since we know how this ends I feel bad for Dr Haas. It seems in the preview Libby suspects Virginia is in the video, maybe she will confront Bill.

The finale looks SO INTENSE! I can't wait. But then I have to wait a whole damn year for next season. I absolutely adore this show, it's writing, characters but most of all, the acting. Sheen and Caplan are incredible n

Haas is so adorable with Virginia's kids. I hated his character in the beginning of the season, but he has grown so much.

Masters should have not let Libby work on the study what a lapse I'm judgement.

I think that just showed how hyper-focused he was on the presentation. If he'd been thinking clearly he should definitely have locked up Virginia's file at least.

Was that Lizzy Caplan singing the song at the end?

My guess is yes, that definitely sounded like her voice to me.

Did anyone else find themselves saying "masters and johnson! masters and johnson!" when Haas and Virginia were lying in bed and Haas keeps going through great duos throughout history? Cringeworthy scene.
