Bus dude knows how to bust a rhyme.
112
u/Vitalstatistix Nov 26 '13
Bus dude is one of the most successful guys in theater these days. Lin Manuel Miranda is a ridiculously amazing genius.
22
u/stillusescrayons Nov 26 '13
I did not even realize it was him! He is the dude who did the Alexander Hamilton rap!

The fact that the commercials don't rhyme too threw me off completely.

Nov 26 '13
Where's the Best Buy Christmas one? That would've fit so neatly.

u/N0IDED Nov 26 '13
Are we really doing this? This joke is just so cheesy.

I think it would've been so much better if they didn't emphasize every rhyming word. They could've used the same scheme, but speak at a normal pace.
-4
u/Sportfreunde Nov 26 '13
A half hour has 22 minutes and you just wasted 8 minutes by watching it live with commercials when you could've watched online (Norhyme).

u/sixthflagbearer Nov 26 '13
I'm loving the artwork before the stories.
122
Nov 26 '13
I liked the barney one, a little boy in a man's suit, rather fitting.
42
-1
u/Ikhtionikos Nov 26 '13
That's probably the only thing I liked about that whole episode...
1
u/shaleesmo Nov 29 '13
I know this is 2 days late but I agree with you. The last 2 episodes were the worst episodes by far...

I hope "Mosby at the Bat" is one of Lily and The Mother's children books
EDIT: Okay maybe not the blue balls part.

97
u/ShibuyaStation Nov 26 '13
Hahahaha nice.
Of course Barney would say he's Derek Jeter.
28
u/tenderkittylicks Nov 26 '13
I'm pretty sure he has done that before, can't think of the exact episode though. Could be another throwback. That's how I saw it coming.
36
u/Valistia Nov 26 '13
He definitely claimed to be a Yankee previously, but I can't remember if he said a specific player.
36
u/tenderkittylicks Nov 26 '13
Just looked it up - Season 4 Ep 1. Robin tells a waitress that Barney is the Yankees' second baseman. I feel like it happened another time though...could be wrong.
Edit: It's also mentioned in "The Bracket" that he once pretended to be Jorge Posada.
11
u/Valistia Nov 26 '13
That's a different one than the one I was thinking of. The one I think I mean is Barney telling some girl that she should tell her nephews to bring their gloves to the game cause they'll be in foul ball country. And that the tickets will be in his name.

3
u/WCTMPP Nov 26 '13
I think back in season 4 or 5 Nick Swisher was actually on the show. He was sitting in the back left of the bar with a bunch of peeps.

u/Jah-Eazy Nov 26 '13
The only thing that kept popping in my mind was when Nick Swisher was in an episode.

u/Osuran Nov 26 '13
I thought it was a throwback to the episode where he was able to convince a girl he was Ryan Gosling

3
Nov 30 '13
I've seen Dr. Horribles so many times I can't even count it, but I guess I missed the reference, what happened?
3
u/GammaGrace Nov 26 '13
I was so happy when I saw that! I wish they would have mentioned the blog at the end, haha....
15

I get that

I wouldn't be surprised if they cursed your name at the end, but yeah, they might thank you in a couple weeks.
31
u/hungariannastyboy Nov 26 '13
I couldn't get past the first 2 minutes....another filler episode and the whole rhyming thing annoyed me, but looking at the posts here I feel like I'm alone. I maniacally started fast-forwarding through it in the hopes of finding that the whole episode wouldn't be narrated wholly in rhymes with meaningless stories. Oh well
7
u/corgii Nov 27 '13
I could honestly deal with a filler episode, I don't mind them as they can be funny, but I agree about not getting past the first two minutes. The rhyming just really annoyed me and I couldn't even hear what they were saying because I just kept waiting for rhyme. It was cleverly written and all but I just really hate rhyming (every time I heard it I cringed). I'm glad some people still enjoyed it and could appreciate it though.
16
u/moringrim Nov 26 '13
You're definitely not alone. This episode was complete and utter bullshit! This season is easily ruining the show..
4
u/shaleesmo Nov 29 '13
I'm 2 days late replying to this, but you are not at all alone. I've been a very loyal himym fan since day one, but this episode, as well as the mom and dad one, were some of the worst television I've seen in ages :(. This was the first time ever that I've been bored out of my mind watching this show.
2
u/Archer5thseason Nov 30 '13
Not alone at all. Waste of time. Could have been done a lot more effectively in some filler episode with Zoe/The Captain or Marshall at GNB a few seasons back.
1
u/tastyfreeze1 Nov 29 '13
I've thought the last two episodes, prior to this one, have been great. Honestly if you go back and watch all the episodes of this show now, you'll realize that there have been some pretty bad filler episodes... but the reason we love this show (or the reason you're on the himym subreddit) is because of those great episodes that really resonated. Whether they were funny, heartwarming, ridiculously cheesy, or just legen......... wait for......... dary, we all seemed stick around, despite those shitty episodes.
61
u/captars Nov 26 '13
Is that Lin-Manuel Miranda? That would explain the rhyming.
24
u/TheActivistClown Nov 26 '13
I thought I recognized but I didn't know from where; eventually I realized I had seen that sweet rhyming on House M.D.
11

u/ShibuyaStation Nov 26 '13
This scene reminds me of Matilda where the fat kid ate the whole chocolate cake infront of the auditorium.

u/Classic_Wingers Nov 26 '13
This was a bold episode. I'm not sure it paid off in my opinion but it was different. I'm a huge Community fan and enjoy when the show tries to take a new direction so I figured this would be a good twist on the normal formula. It kinda got old quickly though for me. Not sure about you guys. I did like that Marshall was able to continue the rhyme going but this was really an episode I would never have expected in a final season.
38
u/newt12 Nov 26 '13
Funny the first 10 minutes, annoying for the next 20.
18
2
u/abrahamisaninja Nov 27 '13
"Im a huge community fan"
How bout that shitty puppet episode (or all of season 4, really)
1
u/Megasus Nov 28 '13
It was shitty because a puppet episode is not a new direction. It was an artificial attempt at the shows past deviations from the norm, which had by that time already become the norm. Season 4's biggest problem was trying too hard.
2
u/Tuxeedo Dec 02 '13
I feel like it would have been OK for the first 10mins, but doing it for 20 was a waste of time and simply annoying. It's not the type of episode you'd expect in a final season.

u/wildcard58 Nov 26 '13
I sense some people want to grade this episode F-minus
But do you really want another week of "Thank you, Linus"?
189
u/TheFaradayConstant Nov 26 '13
Progress in the least would be cool I guess though. I wanted this season to emotionally resonate with the mother but this Marshall roadtrip thing has absolutely ruined the season for me so far.
95
u/wildcard58 Nov 26 '13
Agreed... I was hoping that he'd get there tonight but it seems like they are intent on continuing to beat that dead horse.

Nov 26 '13
I've never heard of him being "done" with the show, only that his career is extremely busy now.
12
u/wildcard58 Nov 26 '13
True, at this point I think this season might have been better off as a half-season instead of a full one. "Filler" can be done well or it can get annoying, and I think I've crossed that point with the Marshall not getting to the wedding stuff. For example, the stuff with Marshall's face on the iPad worked pretty well (and met the criteria for the actor). (Also, he's already missed the rehearsal dinner, so there's nothing left for him to miss since we know he is at the actual wedding.)
10
u/IkLms Nov 26 '13
They did know that before the beginning of last season though didn't they? They should have just wrapped it up then.
14
36
1
u/Gingersparkle Nov 28 '13
Why though? Were there problems with the cast and show or was it just scheduling conflicts?
2
u/SetupGuy Nov 26 '13
Wow... you know, come to think of it, I was hating on the "omg why does the whole season have to be just the wedding" aspect but what has actually been bothering me is the stupid fucking Marshall roadtrip!
And actually giving a shit about the mother would help, too. Her scene with Barney was pretty cool.
2
u/Tuxeedo Dec 02 '13
I don't know whats worse though. If anything Thank you, Linus was less annoying then attempting to mimmic a theme.
3
u/NotBrandon Nov 26 '13
Even though people disliked this episode's plot; I must say this episode's writing is exceptional.
1
Nov 26 '13 edited Nov 26 '13
I'm sure many noted Marshall's questionable rhymes.
But even though they're not all perfect, there were a few times
they were quite amusing, and shouldn't be dismissed
as anything less than brilliant. Especially Barney's. His were A-list.

u/wildcard58 Nov 26 '13
As a gimmick episode I'd say A for execution and B+ for actual episodes. I think gimmick episodes are high-risk/high-reward (example of one that failed: The Burning Beekeeper), and I'll give them points for trying but I'm not surprised it was so polarizing.
4
u/mtlyoshi9 Dec 02 '13
Dude...I loved that episode.
2
u/wildcard58 Dec 03 '13
I thought that it should have been actually filmed as one take (I don't think it was) instead of trying to replicate it, and the fact that the episode itself wasn't great didn't help either. I don't have the extreme hate for it that most people seem to though.
2
Nov 30 '13
Which one was the burning beekeeper?
4
u/wildcard58 Dec 01 '13
The one where Lily and Marshall throw a party at the house on Long Island. The gimmick being that there were three scenes of action going on continuously that we see as a single "long take" (sort of), punctuated by the titular beekeeper running through the scene. Not exactly a true gimmick episode but I think the closest HIMYM has come up to this point.
264
u/buhnyfoofoo Nov 26 '13
Why wouldn't he just call someone at the Farhampton to come pick him up instead of walking with Marvin and his luggage? Oh wait, I know.... because the writers need more material to draw out this stupid plotline.

Marshall narrating a filler episode almost makes up for the fact that he isn't there yet. Almost.

They have just half a season left to end a great show, but all the writers can give us is a gimmicky, shitty, filler episode? They can't even come up with 12 episodes? I thought they could've at least given us something that moved the story along or had anything to do with the group meeting the mother. This just wreaks of laziness. This will always be in my top 5 sitcoms but it is ending terribly. I will give them the benefit of the doubt and hope the series end with a bang

I can imagine how this sounded like a fantastic idea in the writer's room, but most of it just isn't working. The Date Line and Barney as Jeter were both great jokes though.

Even though you are fine and sexy and dandy and all that right now, don't walk the distance with Marvin in your hands.

u/Raktoner Nov 26 '13
Here here, CBS, that was quite the tale.
However, some might see this episode as a fail!
While people enjoy Marshall and the baby,
The fillers seem crazy and lazy!
We watch this every week for a good half hour,
But some part of this leaves a taste that is sour!
So while this series, this show is divine,
Did you really have to rhyme every line?

As fun as the rhyming idea was in general, this episode was actually pretty stale, overall. Nothing very interesting going on, except for Barney. Who always seems to be interesting, no matter how much everyone else manages to fail.
And Marshall's rhyming was pretty horrendous. It was like he was counting the syllables in his head.
