AT LAST an answer to the "does Barney know Robin can't have kids" question.

u/shadypanda Nov 05 '13
along with a very well done scene of Barney finding out and a very special and loving hug. That scene and Barney's explanation of why he is marrying Robin to his Mom made me see them as a couple more than them saying the same thing at the same time. It made me feel like no matter what they will get through whatever life throws at them.

Nov 07 '13
It's because instead of trying for a forced moment, Robin, Barney, and Loretta acted like adults.
The biggest fault in any Robin-Barney pairing is that they rarely act like people. The end of S4 (The Leap) had that, and this episode had that. Most other moments are obvious sitcom-character moments, and those have typically been out of place on HIMYM.

jeez that delivery from Robin and the execution was so bad

I don't think she realised what she said until Barney started hugging her.

I don't understand why they wasted what could have been a fantastic moment on an odd flashback. It's almost as though the writers forgot that Barney didn't know yet and needed to scramble to find a way. Could have been a much better moment on par with the episode where Robin found out herself.

u/HIMYMfan21 Nov 06 '13
I agree that the flashback seemed a bit thrown together. I agree that the reason for the flashback could have been because the writers simply forgot to include Barney's reaction in season 7 due to the last minute editing changes. However, I'd like to believe that there was a deeper reason. Perhaps the writers did not want to include Barney's reaction in season 7 because it would have blended in with the other characters' reactions and other events. By using a flashback to show Barney's reaction, his response is separate from the others'. The flashback emphasizes that his response was more important than any other characters' because of the fact that Robin's situation would eventually affect him just as much as affects her. Had the writers shown Barney's response earlier, it might have seemed less special and significant because Barney and Robin were not together at the time. Just a thought.

The last 15 minutes of tonight's episode is what I would hope the rest of this season is like. Every character seemed natural and not like they were just playing a parody of themselves.

Nov 05 '13
I won't hide that I've been shitting all over this show for the past two years, but I agree with you. The last 15 minutes of this episode really brought back that magic of the previous seasons. Funny, quirky, but still genuine and heart-felt.
"Thank you, Linus" really needs to go away, like quick.

I like it but should be brought down to one an episode.

So true. At the beginning of the episode, I was rolling my eyes at how over-the-top the characters were. But the last 15 minutes was how the show used to be - real, funny, and meaningful.

Nov 05 '13
I was so happy with this episode. The actors and writers were just like the previous seasons.

This is definitely one of my favorite episodes of the season. Lots of stuff happened to develop the plot, nothing seemed rehashed, and everything flowed well (in my opinion).
Love love love!

Heh, ZedZed Top...
43
Nov 05 '13
I always thought "zed" was a British / UK thing. Do they say it in Canada as well?
77
16
Nov 05 '13
Yep. Occasionally some "zee" trickles in. We certainly don't say ZZtop. As a car fanatic, I do here some people talk about zee06 Corvettes, although that one's rare. I have said zedzedTop and Jay-Zed as a joke.

u/SexBobomb Nov 05 '13
Zed is correct in Canadian English, Zee is common because of American media however.
2
Nov 07 '13
For the most part, yes.
Sometimes we say "Zee" when it's in a title or name or something (Dragonball Zed sounds just as wrong as Zed Zed Top, for example) but that's about the extent of it.
Canadian English is a mix of the Queen's English (for spelling and grammar) and American English (for slang.) As a Canadian, I feel that, in a lot of ways, we exist in a halfway point between American culture and British culture.

u/ramesali786 Nov 05 '13
That silent hug is the best Barney/Robin moment of the season, way better than the forced awws
154
u/GamerKingFaiz Nov 05 '13
I also liked the Loretta/Robin hug exchange. It was nice to see they accept each other now.

u/maladroitent Nov 05 '13
Agreed, I cried like a baby. This episode just really got my feelings all hyped up.

u/AnimusRN Nov 05 '13

u/Baelorn Nov 05 '13
They showed it in multiple episodes leading up to this one. Someone called that it would be involved in a future episode.

24
u/azizinator25 Nov 05 '13
Last episode there was a kid playing with a toy car on the staircase. Maybe 2 episodes ago now that I think about it. Anyway, Lily is on the phone, and yells at the kid to be quiet. The kid runs away and leaves the car there. One redditor pointed this out, and thought something might come of it, but I don't really feel like digging through an episode discussion thread to find it.
7
u/FireFlyz351 Nov 05 '13
Said redditor believed that Ted was going to trip on the car and sprain his arm, but turns out Kassie tripped on the car.

I said that if they wasted that car on Ted, I'd be pissed. Using it on Kassie though ... I'm ok with that.

I would say he did it again sometime between now and 2015 since the mom mentioned that if he pukes then she does. In my mind that implies that that situation has happened.

Vomit free since 20 1 3?. Seems like something Ted would do with the date.
1
u/orange_sox Nov 05 '13
Well, the whole premise of Vomit free since 93 was Vomiting because of Alcohol.

2
u/spurscanada Nov 05 '13
maybe the script writers forgot her name was Virginia
11
u/Baelorn Nov 05 '13
More likely they were worried people would go "Who?" in response to her name.
They call her "Ted's Mom" so much that that is how she should be listed in the credits.

I thinks it's lame and weird they turned him into such an angry guy. Really? Couldn't just leave his character alone? Had to uproot his entire personality in one episode?
Lazy lazy writers I say
1
Nov 05 '13
I wouldn't say that, I'd say they've been pushing his limits all season with the black woman being very antagonistic. Clint was the final straw this episode.

The infamous plot development??
3
u/sgtlobster06 Nov 05 '13

15
u/venn177 Nov 05 '13
This was the first episode that legitimately moved story forward at all, even though it was just Robin and Barney's mom.
That's more than, like, the last four episodes can say.

everybody is being super rough on this this season. but honestly, its the same rate as if this were the first 8 seasons.
8
Nov 05 '13
Come on, even I have to admit the season has been pretty weak up to this point. I mean, that scene with ted and the old timey swimsuit. What thefuck?
17
u/venn177 Nov 05 '13
Except it's not. At all?
I mean, last season wasn't that great either, but now everything has become a parody and most of the writing and cutaway gags belong in Family Guy.
Robin being a superhero or whatever the fuck that was last episode; Lily crushing glasses in her hand-- all this shit is just not at all in reality.
Suspension of disbelief is believing someone would steal a blue horn from a restaurant, not someone angrily crushing glasses in her hand and not being hurt from it because someone mentioned something relating to something.

Kassie is one of the most beautiful girls Ted's had on the show, but damn is she annoying.
160
91
u/Rick_Ghastley Nov 05 '13
I feel like that was intentional. If they made her even a little bit likeable, there could be some part of the audience that thinks she is better than the Mother. They needed to exaggerate her character flaws so we keep faith in the Mother being the only one for Ted
3
Nov 05 '13
At least she hasn't buried her high heel in Teds head and then thanked Jesus. God, she does crazy well lol
1
Nov 06 '13
I can't help but cringe during scenes with Cassie. The situation is just so awkward. Ted is making an effort to be a little "datey" with her, and things just keep getting worse.
Like, he can't really just dip out and walk away after spending an entire night consoling her then witnessing her eat shit down a flight of stairs. He's stuck in the same hotel all weekend. Oh god. So awkward ;[

Unfortunately for me, I have another large day in court today, with hearings set for 15 cases.
Fortunately for you, since I don't know if I will be home in time to create the discussion thread before the episode beings to air, you get to stare at this thread for the entire day, while you anxiously await the new episode.
Feel free to discuss anything you like in this thread throughout the day. Obviously episode discussion will take over at the time the show airs.
This should be my last Monday court date for a few weeks, so if I am not able to get into the IRC channel this week for live discussion at 8pm EST, I will try to get into the channel by the time the west coast airs the episode live, and I can watch it on my DVR as if it were live.
