"I saw you and Robin at the carousel." Man that was like a slap on the face.

111

u/luzigirl Oct 01 '13

You just got SLAPPED

71

u/Raktoner Oct 01 '13

woooaaahhh...

51

u/Caraes_Naur Oct 01 '13

Across the face my friend...

1

u/[deleted] Dec 03 '13

woooooo-ooooh

16

u/drocks27 Oct 01 '13

It wasn't the final slap though right?

2

u/MaeBeWeird Oct 02 '13

Even if they don't want the final slap to be literal, it still has to be between the right people... so no... not the final slap.

2

u/Smyjunas Oct 06 '13

They said at comic-con that they were going to have an entire episode that would take place in a slap.

25

u/wxcora Oct 01 '13

it's a good thing I wasn't holding any drinks in my hand or I would have dropped it too

5

u/Elfiz Oct 02 '13

my jaw dropped.

6

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '13

I was actually confused by that. What carousel? Where they were digging in the park...?

Edit: Nevermind, figured it out reading the rest of thread.

3

u/Schnurres Oct 02 '13

mind to explain it to me tho?

what is meant with it?

4

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '13

The whole last episode of last season remember how Robin was freaking out looking for the locket in the park? Towards the end her and Ted are digging in the rain and have a little moment and that's where Barney saw them.

1

u/Troub313 Oct 05 '13

They grasped hands There could be more that we weren't initially told, but I think a friend grabbing another friend's hand in a reassuring "Thank You" kind of manner isn't that big of a deal. So I guess there has to be more that happened.

0

u/TheCoxer Oct 02 '13

"Well, you don't have to cry about it"

492

u/Raktoner Oct 01 '13

I think anybody who saw it say "your a penis" knew immediately Ted would fix it to "you're"

142

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '13

He's Reddit's new hero.

10

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '13

Obligatory: "Classic Schmosby"

3

u/SawRub Oct 01 '13

The hero reddit deserves, but not one it needs right now.

10

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '13

No, reddit always seems to need someone to put the apostrophes in places.

1

u/ProphylacticBeetle Oct 07 '13

When I saw it the second time, it kinda looked like it could just have been "You r a penis", which might be abhorrent to the spelling Nazis but it least it's grammatically correct.

140

u/Ilwrath Oct 01 '13

Jesus Christ can we call the scotch police on these people!

61

u/MichaelBergenMD Oct 01 '13

Linus has their contact number

129

u/olive111 Oct 01 '13

As a Canadian, I laughed way too hard at that Maple Leafs joke.

61

u/icantthinkofaname0 Oct 01 '13

im a die hard leafs fan and I still had to laugh at that

18

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '13

And cry.

27

u/PippyTarHeel Oct 01 '13

Psh as a hockey fan in general, we all love a good Leafs joke...

2

u/cpcke Oct 01 '13

glad someone laughed...

277

u/ChooChooTreyn Oct 01 '13

"I have a gay question for you." is my new favorite line of all time

65

u/scarrylary Oct 01 '13

If I'm not mistaken, she says "how do you decide which one..." And then it trails off. I think she was gonna ask who pitches.

40

u/CaptainChewbacca Oct 01 '13

The go-to 'gay question' is usually 'how do you decide which one leads when you dance?'

2

u/scarrylary Oct 01 '13

that puts my mind at ease somewhat

3

u/milkjr Oct 01 '13

opens up to accept the other, was my hope. haha

77

u/MrKentucky Oct 01 '13

I can't decide between that and the back door jokes.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '13

179

u/ChooChooTreyn Oct 01 '13

I can't wait until Ted pulls a Schmosby as the best man

78

u/Ryan_Potter Oct 01 '13

Classic Schmosby.

69

u/stilogeno Oct 01 '13

I can't wait to see the mother reaction to an authentic Schmosby moment.

6

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '13

I would be really disappointed if he didn't cry. So would all the foreigners who flew in just to see him give his speech.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '13

"Robins and Barneys love reminds us that. bwaw, I'm sorry, I'm still in love with Robin."

87

u/wveniez Oct 01 '13

YOU CANNOT JUST DROP A BOMB LIKE THAT AND END AN EPISODE.

161

u/Caraes_Naur Oct 01 '13

It was a bottle of scotch, not a bomb.

3

u/Flamingozilla Oct 02 '13

Not that close to a wedding, anyway.

3

u/Boy_Bastos Oct 03 '13

I'm a big fan of HIMYM, and after the season 8 finale, I went back to watching Burn Notice, while starting Breaking Bad.

I'm sorry, but yes, you can drop a bomb like that and end an episode. Multiple ones...

Executive Producer Vince Gilligan

168

u/ramesali786 Oct 01 '13

But for real, Jason Segel looks better every week

64

u/zackmanze Oct 01 '13

He's looking so bored with it though :/

59

u/Herbrrt_Mewver Oct 01 '13

He's ready to be done. I'm not sure if I'm remembering this correctly, but wasn't he the holdout in negotiations before they could finally agree on the final season?

3

u/jamiesray Oct 04 '13

I figured they set up the Rome thing in case he wanted an out. Its weird. Segal's film career isn't quite... stellar. I have to be honest. The show is wearing me thin. I was hoping this season would be just a normal season plus the mother...

19

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '13

8

u/38B0DE Oct 02 '13

He thinks he's going to have a great movie career and his TV fame is pulling him down.

Actually I have no idea, this is just the cliche that always happens.

3

u/Herbrrt_Mewver Oct 02 '13

Really? As in hated it from the beginning or as of the past few seasons?

10

u/Mishael4248 Oct 02 '13

Because of his contract renewal with HIMYM for season 9, Jason lost his 8 years girlfriend/fiancee. Their argument were about his career, he wanted to finish his job with HIMYM while his girlfriend wanted him to move on because he have several movie offer. I don't think Jason hate the show, but he do hold a grudge.

One of my favorite relationships on the show is that of Ted and Lily, even though you rarely see it. I'm so glad that this episode was almost entirely just the two of them interacting. It's awesome.

70

u/bustedracquet Oct 01 '13

I wholeheartedly agree! I was so happy that they finally gave those two airtime in the finale of last season, because towards the latter seasons they kind of generalized the plots, and exclusively all of Lily's scenes were with Marshall. Early on in the show, they really established a strong friendship between Ted and Lily and they never really gave them many moments together after the early seasons.

Also, the same is true of Ted/Marshall. Despite being best friends, they hardly have any scenes together :(

43

u/idiomsavant364 Oct 01 '13

Despite being best friends, they hardly have any scenes together :(

Which was kinda the impetus behind one last Tantrum-fueled road trip for gut-busting pizza.

2

u/bustedracquet Oct 01 '13

That's why that episode is one of my favorites.

4

u/idiomsavant364 Oct 01 '13

Yeah it was pretty great. I especially loved the Sparky book.

2

u/cpcke Oct 01 '13

Didn't they have a lot of episodes early on when Lilly left for art school? I'm not sure I'm remembering correctly but Ted was the only one who knew for a bit...

26

u/benmiesner Oct 01 '13

Came here to post this. Ted and Lily have the best relationship on the show, in my opinion. I absolutely love how transparent they are with each other. Also, I felt like Lily was giving that speech to me. So, +1 to Lily because this is the side of her I love!

2

u/jamiesray Oct 04 '13

Brings me back to when he called her a cunt because she didn't say goodbye/apologize to Ted for leaving... and then she said she didn't care Robin was his best female friend...

I never got loving vibes bbetween the two. Lily is jolly and generally maternal. Ted wants what's best for Marshall, and that's always been Lily. I don't think that's a shortcoming in the writing, mind you. I think Thomas and Bays are very aware of it.

42

Honestly, I thought it would be talked about between Ted and Robin, not Ted and Barney

I don't see how this is even possible considering he was off playing laser tag with her Dad at the time.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '13

They didn't set up a specific time frame for that though. He could have called Robin, played for 10 more minutes, and then headed to help her. We have no idea how long he played Laser Tag, or how long it took Ted to get there.

Maybe we can try the backdoor. Jesus christ I was laughing so hard when Barney's face lit up and Robin turned him down haha

Even James got in on the fun when he was hiding with them.

Well, so is Barney...

0

3

u/jkjustjoshing Oct 04 '13

My girlfriend and I had just watched this episode last night. She wanted to have some fun in the bedroom, but I wanted to clean the kitchen.

She responded "but sex!".

243

u/Raktoner Oct 01 '13

This is the side of Lily that I think everybody needs as a friend in life

90

u/bustedracquet Oct 01 '13

She's the mother kind of friend that we all need.

16

u/furyasd Oct 01 '13

I wish I had friends.

2

u/Sgt_Pepper91 Oct 03 '13

...I've been told I am the mothering Lily type friend in our group...

2

u/bustedracquet Oct 03 '13

I gotta say I thought you were a dude, because if I recall correctly, we were both on a "sandwich" during the Ashtray episode when we were both commenting in the thread.

I may be wrong about that memory though, because I was on a sandwich...

1

u/tjkwentus Oct 04 '13

As a guy who has that kind of a friend, I can wholeheartedly agree

1

u/guissmo Oct 05 '13

But not the one we deserve.

32

u/lanismycousin Oct 01 '13

Much better than her usual selfish asshole lying douchebag side.

19

u/MrXeon20 Oct 01 '13

I actually like both sides, makes her the perfect package!

1

u/GiantDeviantPiano Oct 03 '13

I have plenty of friends who drink all day

65

u/nanermaner Oct 01 '13

I like how season 2 episode 12 was called "first time in New York" and they went to the Empire State Building. Then, 7 seasons later this episode is called last time in New York!

29

u/dedox17 Oct 01 '13

And Ted said bye to his Empie..

3

u/devman2013 Oct 05 '13

yeah ditto on something borrowed and something blue being Lily and Marshall and Something Old and Something New being Barney and Robin.

1

u/FrenchMyToast Oct 01 '13

Douchey Ted and his Highland clumps and the imposter scotch is hilarious, I know people that react that way to alcohol just to sound cool.

63

u/metssuck Oct 01 '13

We all know douches like this, the best are the wine snobs who swirl a $4 glass of red wine and try to look all smart and shit

8

u/yangar Oct 01 '13

I love wine but I don't have the fanciest I'd palettes.

Last week I saw a wine advertised as damp earth. I had to get it.

→ More replies (3)

9

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '13

That face and that attitude, especially with that outfit and his mottled doughy flesh (well, relatively doughy) was maybe the most unsettling thing on the show so far.

-4

u/FromDaHood Oct 01 '13

Except it's already established that Ted can't tell the difference between $10 and $10,000 scotch so it doesn't make sense for him to swirl it but the writers clearly don't care too much about continuity anymore.

13

u/IRideVelociraptors Oct 01 '13

Just because he can't tell the difference doesn't mean that he won't pretend to know what he's doing and be all fancy for no reason.

Hell if I wouldn't.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/MaeBeWeird Oct 02 '13

Just because he can't doesn't mean he wouldn't pretend to. And the joke is that he obviously can't tell the difference, but is pretending he can (hence why he's drinking something disgusting and pretending it's awesome)

This totally sticks with continuity.

If they had made it seem like he actually did know what he was talking about rather than the obvious lying about it, then it would be against continuity.

164

u/ramesali786 Oct 01 '13

Good lord, Lilly got the super feels speech this week. Ted last week, Lily this week, I think all the characters will have one big one in a rotation each episode.

107

u/olive111 Oct 01 '13

''Say goodbye to all the times you felt lost. To all the times it was a no instead of a yes. To all the scrapes and bruises. To all the heartache. Say goodbye to everything you really want to do for the last time.''

Goddamnit, Lily.

u/kaynotsee Oct 01 '13

Her speech put me in tears. I really felt for Ted and I have always championed for him to be happy. He, may Schmosby it up quite a bit, but he is such a sweet soul and it hurt me to see him hurting. I can't wait for him to be happy. The silly turn of the page made me have happy tears as well, which I always thought this show gives a good mix of.

I am not ready for this show to end. :')

refresh my memory...what happened at the carousel?

39

u/featherstrike Oct 01 '13

Robin buried a locket in Central Park next to the carousel on her first trip to New York. She made a promise to herself that she was going to move to New York and fall in love and marry a sophisticated man. And when that happens, she will go and dig the locket up and use it as her "something old". Last season, when she went digging for it, she couldn't find it and called Barney in her state of panic, but he brushed her off. She then called Ted and he left his interview and came to her to help her look. It then started raining, adding on to the bad omens Robin kept seeing as reflecting on her marriage. Ted held her hand and comforted her.

Someone should really start counting how many drinks Lily will have til the wedding starts.

41

u/thekotoz Oct 01 '13

Ok, but if she hasn't finished the drink at the end of an episode, it should be assumed that at the start of the next episode, it's still the same drink, just to be certain. Any differences in liquid in the glass should be considered a continuity error.

Everybody ok with those rules?

EDIT: Also those drinks that Ted took from Lily that she did not drink shouldn't be counted.

→ More replies (1)

First thing that's important I noticed that could come back to haunt our soon-to-be weds is that about one minute in Robin uses nicknames for her and Barney (R-Train and B-Nasty.)

As I recall nicknames once meant that they'd had a large fight.

I don't know if that fight was in this episode because I'm only in the first few minutes, but just pointing out.

18

u/saxxybeast Oct 01 '13

Didn't Ted say that Robin hated nicknames back when she and Barney were dating the first time around?

7

u/idiomsavant364 Oct 01 '13

There wasn't a fight in this episode that I remember... but with the whole season taking place in one weekend, we might see a fight in one of the upcoming episodes. And then everyone can congratulate you on such an astute observation. Upvote!

21

u/dvars Oct 01 '13

57

19

u/Sgt_Pepper91 Oct 01 '13

Grammatically correct Ted. Always there.

181

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '13

This Robin/Barney subplot is really uninteresting

72

u/diabolical-sun Oct 01 '13

Allow my to quote Future Ted from the beginning of season 8.

"Kids, In the summer of 2012, Everyone was happy. Barney was with Quinn, Robin with Nick, Me with Victoria, and Marshall and Lily with new Baby Marvin. 2012 was the summer of love.... Which means there were absolutely no good stories. Let's skip to Autumn."

Let's be real. Barney and Robin are happy. Happy people are never interesting.

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '13

If Barney saw them at the carousel, that means he was there looking for Robin, which means he did indeed care! Yay! That episode made me sad. I was wondering why Barney didn't help her at all. Cause she did call him and said it's nothing. If Ted knew that it's nothing was not nothing, then Barney should have known too.

29

u/saxxybeast Oct 01 '13

I'm thinking that him talking to her while playing lazertag was a recorded message similar to the one Marshall heard when Barney was driving the taxi, and that he went to help Robin, but saw Ted already there.

11

u/bustedracquet Oct 01 '13

The message there was that Ted knows Robin better than Barney does, and even more than herself at times, evidenced by when he repeatedly told her to go up to the rooftop in the Final Page. It doesn't mean that Barney doesn't love Robin that he didn't know, it's just a reference to the fact that Ted and Robin have been insanely close for eight years, and were roommates for four years, and so he pretty much knows her inside out. Robin has stated multiple times that Ted is her best friend.

I wonder if Barney went to find her at the carousel after he was done with laser tag.

Wasn't Barney playing Laser Tag with Robin's dad during the carousel incident?

Marshall said he would make it to the Wedding by the Rehearsal Dinner. The Rehearsal Dinner is Episode 13. Does that mean that Marshall won't be there until around episode 11-13?

James walking out to the oldies reminded me of T-Dog in Walking Dead...

I still think he should've said "black guy" instead of "brother" but I can see why they wouldnt

30

u/idiomsavant364 Oct 01 '13

But if he said black guy it would kill the double meaning - he's a "brother" but he's also Barney's brother.
