Will try to put things which may/may not be known to people outside MH :
-
MH discussions will be incomplete without glorious 'Ganesh Festival'.
-
Recommended for anyone visiting MH. My fav place : Harishchandra Gadh.
-
Interesting brief compilation of what European travellers have written about 19th century Pune.
& finally would like to share this pic which I had submitted for college project, they made a poster out of it :
http://i.imgur.com/p8vEwqb.jpg?1?9756
Hope vidarbha farmers get as much attention as this futile Bombay/Mumbai issue.
EDIT :
-
Lot of people asking about Pu La Deshpande (the writer) ,you can get glimpse of his writing here.
-
Thing that causes lot of heart-break among Marathis every-time one mentions it.
EDIT : HOLY SHIT !! WHOEVER GAVE THE GOLD>>>THANKS A TON !!!

Your last point reminds me: some say sambhar comes from sambhaji, who, in some southern foray, made a tasty stew to feed his army, from popular southern spices and veggies.

Good compilation
Regret wasting so much time on thread where people are more interested in communal mud-fest than discussing original content for which this thread was started.

That Bal Thackeray cartoon is really nice. Well done, "Ek tha Tiger".
And that glimpse of Pu.La's writing is brilliant! One can only imagine how much better it is in its native Marathi. Really loved it. Thanks.
P Sainath said something similar about the Vidarbha-Lakme thing, didn't he?

I am a Tam who lived in Maharashtra for a few years and it is one of my favorite states. Here are my Qs:
-
Is there a way to get some works of Pula Deshpande in English?
-
Who are some Maharashtrians that you think most non-Maharashtrians will love? Your nominations should be someone who is good in his field and has no known record of douchebaggery(not arrogant, not a regionalistic fella, open-minded, well-behaved at all times...)
-
I've noticed that next to South Indians, a lot of Marati guys like to keep a moustache. Is there a cultural significance here? Or is this a question with no definite answer?
-
How hard is it to learn Marati? I have a peculiar problem: I am a tamil who grew up speaking English and learnt French for donkey's years in school. In French all nouns have a gender. Since Hindi and most Indian languages have gender-based nouns, I really struggle to pick them up since I already know 3 languages(Eng, Fre, Tam), i find it very hard to unlearn them to learn a 4th language. Advice needed from the multi-linguals here.
This is for the Bombay raised Maratis: 5. Like Chembur for Southies, Vile Parle for Gujjus, what parts of Bombay can you find a high concentration of Maratis?
6. Does it feel odd about growing up in a city where in some areas about 70% of the people do not speak the official mother tongue?
8
Aug 10 '13
2) Rajni? :).. Atul Kulkarni, Dadasaheb Phalke, Savrkar ( There are many... I don't remember)
4) Not a native marati speaker, but i feel that marati is not "that" different from hindi*(I may be wrong)*, My friends from Agra were able to infer what I spoke in marati, where as my friend from bangalore were not able to.
4
u/ychromosome Aug 10 '13
2) Rajni? :)
When I was in school, we had a Marathi classmate who claimed that before his mom was married, when Rajni was still a bus conductor, she used to travel in his bus regularly and Rajni had proposed to her. Apparently, she had rejected him.

Savarkar was a Hindu nationalist and fascist who was involved in Gandhi's assassination. We should be glad the likes of him didnt come to power, or India would have been a very different country.

The way things are in India right now, I'm sure a lot of us wish it were a different country.

I have always wondered about translations of Pu La's works myself. They dont translate very well. At least the observational comedies. I know I tried to do that for my wife and I bombed.
We are most proud of our social reformers and activists: Vinoba Bhave, Baba Amte, Sane Guruji, Anna Hazare to name a few. Of course my personal hero is Sachin Tendulkar. I would love for the world to think of him when they think of Marathi people. Dominates his field, ambitious and soft spoken. Delivers. Bhimrao Ambedkar is my other marathi hero. Again, aggressive in non-violent ways. It sometimes makes me sad that there aren't any women in my list.
No definite answer on preference for mustaches. We do because we can.
Marathis is as easy or as hard as Hinid.
For Mumbai related question: The short answer is no. Most mumbaikars don't care about non-marathi speakers making a majority in the city. In fact the minority that IS bothered by "outsiders" has to go to great lengths to be heard. That's why Sena and MNS is so extreme. IMHO.

u/Varkari Aug 10 '13
Never heard about translations of Pu.La. in English. They might lose some magic when translated.
Some great folks who hailed from Maharashtra region:
Tukaram: Radical thinker, his works are simply amazing.
Jijabai: The main force behind the foundation of the Maratha empire.
Santaji Ghorpade/Dhanaji Jadhav: Maratha Generals who led Maratha forces in the war of 27 years.
Maharani Tarabai: Queen during war of 27 years
Bajirao Peshva: led Maratha forces across Narmada.
Umaji Naik: revolutionary
Kanhoji Angre : Admiral Maratha Navy
Anandibai Joshi: First Indian doctor (female)
Babasaheb Ambedkar: Dalit messiah
Gadge Baba: Saint and reformer who fought againt superstitions.
D.K. Karve: Worked for women's welfare
K.D.Jadhav: Bronze at Helsinki Olympics
Maharashtrians (atleast in rural side) keep mustaches because it's considered manly.
Marathi grammer is a bitch (like any other grammar) but it is easy to learn conversational Marathi.

4. Though I am not a native Marathi speaker, I would say that learning Marathi will not be very difficult if you know Hindi. Writing is done using the exact same script, so if you can read Hindi, you can read Marathi. Improving your vocabulary is a different story though.
Bombay raised Marathis
Dadar and Parel have very concentration of Marathis.
2
u/chengiz Aug 10 '13
I would say it used to be true. Every flat in Central Bombay that a Maharashtrian vacates, rarely another Marathi will take. This is because middle class cant afford housing there any more, and if a Maharashtrian has money, he will spring for something in a new development because he doesnt want to be considered a ghati. The only areas still not gentrified are the Muslim and red light areas of South Bombay. Perhaps one day they will go too. Such is life.

Damn, a whole discussion on Maharashtra, and no mention of onions, grapes, sugar farmers cooperative movement which led to setup of higher ed institutions. Also j&k quota for refugee students in engineering colleges. I think it was the first place in the country to introduce the Israeli method of drip irrigation.

Some of the most talented maharashtrians are very humble. i am surprised by their humbleness and will not easily compromise talent or brag or be a douche. they are more focused on their art and talent than anything else
prominent examples
-
cricket: Sachin and Gavaskar, harsha bhogle
-
old stars: Madhuri, Urmila, Sonali Bendre,
-
current stars/: nana patekar, Madhur Bhandarkar, Atul kulkarni, ashutosh gowariker, milind soman
-
Plays/stage actors: ashok saraf, berde, sachin, Prashant Damle, Shriram Lagoo, Bharat Jadhav, Vikram Gokhale, Makrand Deshpande
5: astrophysics: jayant naraliker
6: badminton: prakash padukone
Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle
Pu La deshpande: simply brilliant
There have been tons of social reformers/social activists and freedom fighters falling in the same group

Prakash Padukone isn't Maharashtrian. He is a Konkani speaking person from Karnataka. And Bhogle may call Marathi his mother tongue, but he isn't Maharashtrian.

Congress + SS could not leverage on the IT boom of 90s. Hence there are only few sw firms in Mum. SEEPZ area which was heart of sw industry in Mumbai remains unchanged and pathetic for last 25 years whereas hyd built complete new cities around IT
6
u/Soul2018 Aug 10 '13
IT industry just cannot be in a city like Mumbai.
IT needs lots of cheap land at the beginning to set up. Mumbai neither has lots of land and nor is it cheap. On the other hand Pune is a very popular destination for IT companies. It's debatable but I would say that after Bangalore, Pune has the highest number of IT jobs in India.

Jai Maharashtra! I am from Maharashtra. Any questions?
8
u/ranjan_zehereela Aug 10 '13
Have lived in and visited almost all of the major cities in Maharashtra.
Is demand of Vidarbha state legitimate?
Who votes for Congress/NCP BTW, because poor especially farmers in Maharashtra are suffering for long
7
u/Varkari Aug 10 '13
I don't think the demand doesn't stand on its leg beacause Vidarbha ruling class is in utter shambles. We've idiots like Prakash Ambedkar, Pandurang Fundkar, Prafulla Patel, DB Atram etc. who are more interested in short term benefits for themselves instead of a greater vision for people. The Varhadi janata is damn too busy making ends meet and don't give a shit if Vidarbha is seperated.
35-40% of Maharashtra's population is Maratha (Kshatriya, Teli, Leva, Kunabi etc) and they overwhelmingly vote for NCP. Other major group is OBC (Mali, Sonar etc) and vote for Congress/NCP/BJP based on which caste the candidate is. E.g. Chhagan Bhujbal is NCP and mali, so OBC janata votes for NCP.
The Dalits are fragmented (no pun intended) and vote for R.S.Gavai, Ambedkar, Athavale etc.
BJP gets rest of the share.
So considering the majority, NCP/Congress rules the roost.
3
Aug 10 '13
The sugarcane farmers vote for the NCP, as do a significant chunk of the Maratha caste. Since the Sena and MNS split each other's votes, that tends to be enough.

Without western Mah, Vidarbha would be an impoverished state eligible for central assistance. As things stand, Vidarbha tends to get ignored for infrastructure.

5
u/parlor_tricks Aug 10 '13
God no. I dislike (loathe) the mns and SS fronts but they are your stereotypical chauvinistic patriots. Its country and state for them. They'd fight for India, just that they fight for their idea of their stat too.
4
u/drunkTurtle12 Aug 10 '13
Um, not really. Depends on the person though. If we speak about Balasaheb Thackeray, he always used to say Jai Hind, Jai Maharashtra. There might be some people who might put Maharashtra before, but the same can be said of some people from other states.

Are Maharashtrian Brahmins in this forum aware of the rampant anti-brahminism prevalent in Maharashtra? I am not talking about Mumbai/Pune (which does not represent whole Maharashatra anyways). The rest of the state (Pashcim MH, Marathwada, Vidarbha, Zadipatti) etc are full of crazy Maratha Seva sangh, Sambhaji brigade, dalit fringe groups etc who spew venom and twist facts to suit their propaganda. The sad part is that normal non-brahmins have started believing in these propaganda materials.
Any comments?

I lived in Pune's Bhosri town for 8 years, in a society which was predominately Marathis (all castes). I have noticed that different castes within Marathis does not look each other with the same eyes. There are high caste who won't even allow people from low caste in their homes. There were Kulkarni's, Joshi's and couple of more castes who were overly proud of their last names. Things weren't really good within our society because it had majority SS votes.
Things turned to worse when Raj Thackeray made his first public speech about slapping Biharis. I am from UP. It escalated quickly in our society. 2 of us in a housing society of 150 odd houses were looked down upon every now and then. People who use to talk to us in Hindi or English quickly switched to talk to us only in Marathi. We had to pay 500 each to 10 different Ganpati Pandaals in the locality. Kids in our society often shouted at us 'biharis tujhe aayi chi', 'bhaiya's fuck off'. All of this when my mom and sister use to visit me often. Any theft in a kilometer of radius and our society chairman has to come and talk to us in a manner that we are responsible for it.
We couldn't move out of the society because my dad owned the flat we were putting up in. After ignoring them for 6 months we finally had to report the matter to police because someone threatened us to leave or we will be murdered. We had to pay 20K to the policy and they put up a constable for two days in the society.
In one of the society meetings I was told by the board members that we should sell our place and move somewhere else. I asked why to which they had no reasons.
We finally had to sell the flat in the rate lower than what we bought for 8 years ago.
I now live in Noida. I hate MH and Marathis to the core. I wouldn't offer my dick to thackerays to suck. I swear to god, I will beat up any marathi I will find anywhere in India.
Edit: Typo.

but turns out top comment is about beating up Marathis !
Straight out goon-mentality is reflected in these comments !
@ u/kulmari : You were discriminated and you want to beat up Marathis. Just like that many Marathis were discriminated by Northies and then they joined MNS to beat up other Northies. You want to know why so much Anti-North hatered in MH ? Just look at yourself ,you will find the answers. And don't find elated by number of 'upvotes'. Shiv Sena rules BMC on basis of same 'upvotes'. Its not about number of upvotes, its about rational thinking. Do have it.

This needs further discussion and upvotes. I believe this guy is telling the truth. Despite so many good experiences in Maharashtra, I think Marathi manoos do have a problem, I believe they live with an over hyped superiority complex somehow originating from hatred for others.
I would also like to mention that - Maharashtra has been home land of Hindu Mahasabha & RSS. Theie ideology has mutated badly into that of SS & MNS.
Even I saw Marathi manoos making a poor Bihari guy stand up in front of them in local and by turns making fun of him and verbally abusing him for almost half an hour. After that I intervened by saying -" jaane do, gareeb aadmi hai"
Mumbai was earlier a Portuguese establishment, later handed over to British. British people laid the foundations of modern Mumbai/Bombay.
So many Gujjus, Shettys and others from different part of India made it worth our financial capital

I lived in Baramati for 2 yrs, & faced worst discrimination from fellow North Indians . So what do you expect me to do : start beating each and every North Indian that I meet ??
Thankfully I had to leave that company. My work of 10months stretched for 24 months ,because the main guy in authority hated Marathis. I wasted 2 yrs of my life in that shithole of a company.
But then again ,I din't let hate take over my thinking process. Today I have freinds from all regions/relgions who have helped me reach where I am. If I had thought like you , I won't have made friends with North Indians, but that's just plain retarded to stereotype any particular community from acts of few .
I now live in Noida. I hate MH and Marathis to the core. I wouldn't offer my dick to thackerays to suck. I swear to god, I will beat up any marathi I will find anywhere in India.

I don't live in India, but I'm Marathi. One of my best friends' dad (born and raised in Delhi) called me Ghati when we first met. Didn't hate DL. Then he apologized, once he realized how offensive it was. Still don't hate DL. It goes both ways, but it doesn't mean you need to get aggressive.

I have noticed that different castes within Marathis does not look each other with the same eyes. There are high caste who won't even allow people from low caste in their homes.
Is this an exclusively Maharashtrian phenomenon? If not, is it much less wherever you originally hail from? Has it always been like that?
Kids in our society often shouted at us 'biharis tujhe aayi chi', 'bhaiya's fuck off'. All of this when my mom and sister use to visit me often.
That sure must have been beyond embarrassing and enraging. If I'm allowed, I extend the most profound apologies on behalf of 'my people'.
Any theft in a kilometer of radius and our society chairman has to come and talk to us in a manner that we are responsible for it.
Again, reprehensible. The situation has come to such a pass because evidently, most of the Northerners who come to Maharashtra's cities are uneducated desperadoes who even resort to crime to earn their living. Go through a Mumbai newspaper and you'll notice there's a large number of people who commit petty crimes and run off to their native places somewhere in the Hindi heartland to evade arrest. This is not to say that crimes are committed by only certain people, but the problem is that about the only Northerners people here have seen in real life are such cases. You don't see this happening in the almost equally cosmopolitan Bengaluru.
But still, that in no way affects the kind of tremendous respect that individuals like say, Atal Behari Vajpayee command here!
After ignoring them for 6 months we finally had to report the matter to police because someone threatened us to leave or we will be murdered. We had to pay 20K to the policy and they put up a constable for two days in the society.
Are you holding the Pune police to different standards than that of say, Noida?
I now live in Noida. I hate MH and Marathis to the core.
So how are you different than the very people you're complaining about? Going by context, you seem to be more educated and well-travelled than them, yet you harbour such extreme emotions?
I swear to god, I will beat up any marathi I will find anywhere in India.
God wants you to beat up Marathis, is it?

I've always felt Bombay should be separated from the rest of the state and be made into a union territory or something. Even before pre-independence era, it was home to Gujjus and Mahrashtrians in almost equal amounts along with other smaller communities. It is unfair for Mahrashtrians to claim Bombay as their own.
I'd like to hear the opinion of a Mahrashtrian on this controversial topic.
2
u/1581947 Aug 14 '13
I hope no one actually tries to do this. A lot of time efforts and blood will be wasted while we have many other important issues which should be the focus.
1
u/wanderingmind Aug 10 '13
In general Maharashtrians will oppose it strongly. They would refer to the 100-odd people who died for it, and that sacrifice would not be in vain.
I personally think they sacrificed their lives asking for someone that really did not belong to them culturally or economically, and are still fighting to make it belong to them. Mumbai's culture is totally different from that of Maharashtra, and that's not gonna change. If they want it to change, they can move the business out of the city and create another city where cosmopolitanism rules and Mumbai can nuture and cultivate Marathi culture, but that is impractical.

Source? I have quoted a 1951 census report in a thread earlier that clearly showed Marathis constitute more than half the population, and later have always been the largest linguistic group in the city.
It is unfair for Mahrashtrians to claim Bombay as their own.
It is absurd for anyone to 'claim' an entire city as their own. All they say is, whether Marathi or non-Marathi, Mumbaikars should not have to bear the brunt of massiv emigration into the city, especially since infra is woefully inadequate.

It's a fool's errand. If you think the trouble in Andhra over Telangana is unfortunate, well, separating Mumbai from Maharashtra will be a hundred times more emotional and, given the presence of the Thackerays, more violent.

Can anyone tell me why Ganpati aartis sound like a lot Sanskrit than Marathi? I know most languages and prayers originated in Sanskrit, still someone please offer an overview of how the Marathi language evolved. For e.g. how English has Old English, Middle English and now Modern. Does Marathi have similar classification as well?
P.s Ganesh chaturthi in a month and I won't be there T_T

AFAIK,
Proto Indo European -> Proto Indo Iranian -> Vedic Sanskrit (2000 BC) -> Classical Sanskrit (500 BC) -> Maharashtri Prakrit (300 BC) -> Old Marathi (700 AD)-> Middle Marathi (1200 AD) -> Marathi (1700 AD) -> Standard Marathi

I do not like Misal Pav. No. Sorry.
Puranpoli was ...I dont know.
Is Ja replaced with Za, example Jenifer will be Zenifer?
Good Lavni videos please.
Why Uttar Kannada is part of Kannada when they are more Marathi than Kannadiga?
Do Thakrey family hold any value outside of Bombay Mumbai?
Who so ever answers this question, why does your surname end with *.kar? Like Tendulkar or Patkar or Acharkar etc etc...
If I trust my mom's version, some Marathi families, mostly Brahmins, were displaced from MH during Shivaji's time period and some of them settled in HP. Like Agnihotris are mostly Marathis but can be found in HP as well. Is that true?
EDIT: Jai Maharashtra. And if any Marathi ever said Balley Balley to a Punjabi, "Agha bai" for you.

No. Marathi has a soft j sound, most accurately denoted in English as dz. There is the regular j sound as well. Both are written by the devanagari ज. When j occurs in an English word, some marathi speakers overcompensate and say the soft j. This usually happens only in the middle of a word, so Jennifer will be said correctly.
Marathis in uttar Karnataka
Still a sore issue in certain circles. State line should have been drawn further south according to many. Here's an article with more info.
-kar ending
This is a suffix that means "from" or something like that, basically a qualifier. Sorta like how Russians are -ov. Doesnt mean anything anymore.
Marathi families displaced
Not during Shivaji's time but probably later. And probably not displaced forcibly or anything but emigrated. Maratha empire was quite big. Eg. the Scindias are originally Shinde. They anglicized their name because Shinde was vulgar. Same as how Bal Thackeray's dad anglicized their name from Thakre.

The part of the surname before kar is the name of your ancestral town / village / city. So your surname is also a geo-tag, in a way.
Also, the Brahmin families weren't displaced, but migrated to help with the administration of the Maratha empire. Many stayed on in HP, UK etc.
Aga bai is a cringeworthy phrase that is said only by women to other women (and even then, not often).
Ja and za doesn't apply to proper nouns.

Why Uttar Kannada is part of Kannada when they are more Marathi than Kannadiga?
According to wikipedia, there are more kannada and konkani speakers than marati speakers in Uttar Kannada. Altough, people do understand the language. Since, the place is more to the karwar side, there's a more konkani culture than marata culture there.
Besides, why are we talking about UK in a thread about Maharastra?

Marathis in Belgaon area themselves don't want to be part of Maharashtra state.Fact.
Do Thakrey family hold any value outside of Bombay Mumbai?
Thakerays were specifically put in Island city by Yashwantrao Chavan (Sharad Pawars mentor) to keep Marathi flag flying high. Bal Thackeray is god like figure and is respected across party lines. Buts thats about it,it doesnt necessarily mean people will vote him .

History is one wacky subject. Shivaji had displaced one Maratha Clan of More's in konkon after they consistently sided with Mughals. Thats the reason one will find More's in almost every part in MH. But thats just one of the many theories. Truth we will never know.

No idea boss. 'kar' means 'do' ,maybe it is referred to someone doing some specific job since generations ,just wild guess.
and also ..Balle Balle :D

Bombay, city where poor and rich live together. A city where I spent 6 months as a poor intern. So during my internship, these were few local cuisines which I kept my hunger at bay.
Misal Pav
Vada Pav
Pav Bhaji
Veg Frankie
Apart from this various, street site Chinese vendors, selling really spicy Szechuan Fried rice, which I used to have it with curd :-)
Bombay, a city of fast life and fast food. That is how I always refer to the city to anyone else.
Special mention: Flora Fountain, book market.
