What if we as an audience choosing which timeline is the real one is the "mystery" for this episode!?
edit: nevermind, girl in front of the taxi. that's it.

OH MY GOD NO! I was literally jumping with joy when it showed them getting back together. THEN THEY TORE MY WORLD APART. WHYYYY WHYYYYYYY
74
u/BartletForPrez Apr 18 '13
I was actually really annoyed that he seemed to learn nothing from his flashbacks... that having been said, it is entirely within his characterization to ignore the point of a lesson.
20
u/TheJackal8 Apr 19 '13
Yeah, rather than say something useful like "I realize I betrayed your trust but you know why I had to" he blamed it on the jacket. It made me mad since it could have been fixed.
15
u/bacon_pants Apr 19 '13
It seems unusually obtuse of Shawn to say what he did (I know he can be willfully obtuse but not when something really important is going down). He knows Juliet well enough to know that she feels betrayed by his dishonesty. His little speech about the jacket was basically like saying "Man I wish I hadn't gotten caught so I could continue lying to you", when what he should have said was, "I should have told you the truth a long time ago". I honestly think she would forgive him if he came clean to everyone, but if he actually turns into a psychic, no one will believe him.
3
u/TheJackal8 Apr 19 '13
And that's the issue, she would have forgiven him if he just told her what you said and came clean. I guess that's TV for you, people do the illogical thing because it makes the problems draw out. I don't think he will come clean to everyone though, then it couldn't be called Psych anymore. I think he'll just end up apologizing and telling her everything but that she won't tell anyone.
17
u/TheMelroseDiner Apr 18 '13
I knew that was a dream because, as much as I would have liked, they can't end that huge part of the story that quickly
5
Apr 18 '13
i wouldn't have been surprised honestly - they did it with Henry's shooting.
3
u/TheMelroseDiner Apr 18 '13
Well that was in between seasons so I guess I didnt really notice that at first, but you're right
1
u/lespaulbro Apr 18 '13
THHAAAATTTSSSS IT. IM DONE. I GIVE UP. YOU MAKE ME SAD PSYCH. I DO NOT HAVE THE EMOTIONAL STAMINA FOR ANOTHER WEEK OR TWO OF THIS.
1
u/Tesatire Apr 19 '13
I felt the same way, but one thing that made me want to hit Juliet was when, in the real timeline, he said "if I'd never given you that stupid jacket we'd be okay". I started yelling "You just TOLD her that you'd prefer lying to her! At least tell her that you are happy that it's finally out in the air and now you can work past it!" Tell her it's been a burden and you've wanted to tell her but didn't know how. Tell her that it's been tearing you apart, do NOT tell her that you wish she still believed the lie.

Actually, the episode was written by Carlos Jacott and directed by David Crabtree, not James.

Thanks. I got it from Wikipedia which I guess isn't always reliable. I'll fix it soon.

I'm watching the episode right now and broken up with Shawn is just so annoying. I can't stand watching it.
Edit: Yea, just finished watching. Shawn played that so horribly. Kept trying to shift blame. Act like it wasn't a big deal. Saying that things would be fine if he hadn't given her his jacket. That is not what you say in that situation. I was gonna be really mad if they did get back together after the way he acted this episode.
99
u/Reichman Apr 18 '13
Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't the Jules in Shawn's imagination tell him SPECIFICALLY don't tell me that if I hadn't found the jacket we would still be happy, and he woke up and said the same thing to the real Jules!?
68
u/Dooflegna Apr 18 '13
That's the point. The dream world is showing us how Shaun would correct things the right way. He understands Jules well enough to know what she needs to here... He's just too chicken to do it in the real world.
7
u/Sambagthebrave Apr 19 '13
I totally agree. His dream version with the gushy comments at work between them and the marriage talk is too rushed for him. It makes sense that he would push her away. Also, if he listened to the advice in the dream then he/we would jump too quickly into the idea that the concussion started triggering actual visions.

when he said that line about the jacket at the end to her i actually made the cringe face

Aside from Julliet and Shawn not being together, my greatest regret about the happy timeline not being real is that we won't see anymore of Lassie Jr. :(. He looks just like my dog when he was a puppy.

u/miasa Apr 19 '13
A lot, actually. He's listed as a writer in American Duos, Tuesday the 17th, the entire Yang triligy, Duel Spires, and several others. He also directed some episodes, like Tuesday the 17th and Mr. Yin Presents. I agree with andyroo520; he's one of psych's strongest writers, and always does fun stuff with the camera when he's directing. Source

I love the dual timelines concept. Some awesome camera work with the split scenes, and the cab going both ways was sweet!

If you liked this episode, check out the film "Sliding Doors", or the episode of Frasier "Sliding Frasier's"!!
1
u/Krispyz Apr 18 '13
I'm not sure I could handle a whole movie of it, but this episode was fantastic.
1
Apr 18 '13
Sliding Fraisers is a half hour. :) I've always enjoyed it many of the scenes are exact replicas with changes instead of different scenes.
And of course there's Perspectives on Christmas which isn't this same technique but there are some similarities.
1
u/happysteve Apr 18 '13
Also, there's a Malcolm in the Middle episode titled "Bowling" with the same concept.
1
u/midwestredditor Apr 23 '13
That's just a Gweneth Paltrow vehicle.
1
Apr 23 '13
As far as I know it is the originator of the idea... so deal with it.
1
u/midwestredditor Apr 23 '13
Season 2, Ep 7: "If You're So Smart, Then Why Are You Dead?"
Gus: I just found out that the course of my life may have been changed by my parents. You've seen Sliding Doors!
Shawn: I most certainly have not.
Gus: Yes you did!
Shawn: Dude, I have not seen Sliding Doors.
Gus: It was me, you, and Missy Isaacs. What are you talking about?
Shawn: I'm talking about a Gwyneth Paltrow vehicle that I know I never saw!
6
u/happysteve Apr 18 '13
You should check out "Sliding Doors" then. And with a similar concept, "Run Lola Run".

25
u/TheWalkTheLine Apr 18 '13
Have you seen Awake?
2
u/SawRub Apr 18 '13
It was a brilliant show. I was thinking about Awake during this episode. It was kind of similar to this episode: the changes in color, the variation in the murder investigation, the dreaming, one timeline where he is still with his love and one where he isn't, replaying the event that caused this, etc.
2
u/TheWalkTheLine Apr 18 '13
I loved that stuff about awake, especially the subtle stuff, like how they would not only have that blue filter, but more items would be blue in one and more would be red in the other. I really felt like this episode was really channeling Awake.

Yeah, it was really great until the finale, which I guess they kinda had to pull out of their ass.
1
u/ReflexMan Apr 18 '13
Yeah. I wasn't a huge fan of the finale, but like you said, they kind of had to pull it out of their ass.
I am an optimist, so I am going to assume that they had something better planned for the show if it had gotten more time, but the fact that it got cancelled after one season meant that they had to scramble to end it right away.
It's also possible that that was the ending they had planned all along, which would be...meh. But like I said, I will assume they originally had better plans. : 3
40
u/cdragon1983 Apr 18 '13
I assume it's really to make it easier for the viewer to distinguish, but could legitimately be played up as Shawn is dreaming in one so it gets the hazier effect.
(Also, perhaps, a different time of day since the investigation unfolded differently.)

Apr 18 '13
I'm pretty sure the real one is dimmer because the story line is darker...aka Jules knows

Apr 18 '13
I feel bad about it, but I'm glad Jules didn't end up caving like fake-Jules did at the end. Shawn basically told her he wasn't sorry about the lying but just sorry she found out. Not okay, dude!
That being said, I don't know how many episodes I can make it through with them broken up. I want the adorable "big fat kisses" line back!
44
u/cmgerber Apr 18 '13
Shawn is really not doing himself any favors trying to prove that he is still a good detective and ignoring the fact that he lied to Jules. I really hope he figures it out by the end of the episode.

Didn't Gus get married by drinking Goldschlager (sp?) to Mira earlier in the series? How is he allergic to gold dust?
11
u/Flynnbobsled Apr 18 '13
I think the Goldschlager, as they presented it, was one of the reasons the wedding was so crazy. I think Mira said something like, "Remember the Goldschlager?" so it was probably a bad memory.

u/hates_gingers Apr 18 '13
What a great follow-up episode to last week's episode!
The camera work and what not was very fantastic in this episode, specifically with the split screen (sliding door?) overall shooting theme which used different colors to set the mood for the possible timeline and have both going on at once to point out the differences, as well as the scene where Shawn got stabbed and almost got hit by the semi.
I was sad to see that Juliet and Shawn's romance is on hold still, but at the same time I see the merit of it. Had the writers (James Roday mostly I suppose) decided to move past the arguably hugest emotional conflict of the entire series thus far in a single episode, I personally don't think it would have done the Shules relationship justice in the sense of it's depth. They have built up a relationship with each other over years that has brought them to a point where the rely on each other, and Jules finding out that she had been lied to for so long really rocked the foundation of Shules in a way that isn't easily repairable. Shawn's way of coping with what happened was a foolish and immature one, but that is perfectly understandable, considering how his character is terrible at dealing with most any kind of serious situations in a healthy manner, hence his creation of an entire separate reality of everything that happened to him over the course of a day which was twisted by how he refuses to deal with bad situations. Definitely a bad choice to say to Jules that everything would have been okay if he could have continued lying. I do wish that they had gone a bit deeper into what Jules went through in this situation, though. I mean, it was obvious that she was hurt and once again let down in a big way by yet another man in a list of men who, in a better world, should have been honest and supportive for her, but I do wonder what Jules did for the rest of the night after the wedding reception.
All that aside, I had a good number of laughs throughout the episode. I particularly enjoyed some of the ridiculous things that Shawn concocted in his brighter fake reality such as Gus's allergic reaction to gold dust, Lassie acting very un-Lassie-like as he came around to liking Lassie Jr., and Shawn and Juliet acting like such a couple in a sickeningly cutesy manner. And in the darker actual reality Shawn and Gus getting their trash kicked by the the murder at the end was hilarious! Also, Shawn's general ridiculous being heightened by his "mild concussion."
As far as the actual case goes, I was shocked about how many people died in this episode, but the actual number of people that died may be different than what I perceived because we were seeing double the whole time. But the dual realities really added to the case, I think, and really added for quite the twist when it became apparent that the killer was the Swede-ette that Shawn saved in the beginning. I think there was a mix of both classic psychic visions and the newer version we've seen earlier on in this season, but I think that they were used in different types of situations and I liked it.
As far as anything else goes, I like that Pop pop Bluth (or whatever his name is) made another appearance. Also, Chief Vick and Woody the Coroner had some fun moments that are less than what we saw in the last episode, but no less in the qualities that their characters provide to the show.
I'm interested to see how Shawn and Juliet's relationship, or lack thereof, will play out in coming episodes and how they will interact during cases considering that this is probably the lowest point that their relationship with each other has been since Shawn accused Juliet's brother of murder. I also hope to see more of Henry next week because I don't think that we saw enough of him in this episode. Overall, a brilliantly put together episode that made me have the best of times and the worst of times. The actors and writers and everyone else that puts this show together really know what they are doing, and I appreciate the crap out of them for it. I think they're swell.
23
Apr 18 '13
Come on! "If only I hadn't given you the jacket" ?! That was such a weak way to end it. Only the dumbest of people would actually say that, and with how much Shawn's character has evolved, I don't like that ending at all.
Such a good damn episode wasted.

Henry's retired from the force and really cares about Shawn. Additionally, he cares about Shawn finding love as last episode proved. I can't imagine that would have been his reaction.
