The Official 2012 Reddit K-pop Census
Hello all! I've finally created a new census so we can find out a bit more about the users of /r/kpop :)
All information is completely anonymous, so don't worry about your responses being associated with your IP/name or anything.
The survey can be found here. Let me know if you have any questions! I'll post the results in a few days once this has accumulated enough responses.
Also, thanks to everyone on IRC who gave me suggestions for the survey / helped me edit the questions :)
Edit: Things to address:
Sorry that there's no Northern Europe / Scandanavia option for region! Put it under 'other' and I'll go back and count up those responses.
I also forgot to include US territories such as Hawaii in my regions. Apologies ><
I also neglected to include New Zealand as a separate region from Australia... I'm not sure whether people have been picking Australia anyways or typing in New Zealand in 'other' for region if they reside there, but do whatever you wish.
For some reason, I missed f(x) and G.NA on the artist list. Type them into 'other' if you want to select them - I was going to go back and check the other responses anyways.
I added an 'other' option for gender for those of us who are genderqueer/do not fit the gender binary. My sincere apologies for not including this option from the start. I think next year I will also include a question on whether one is cis/trans* just so we can get some more thorough stats.

Done and done. I wonder if the Male / Female ratio will be much different this year.

Does Indian ethnicity fall under Asia or other?

Indian ethnicity would fall under the 'Asian/Pacific Islander' category.

I was forced to choose between IU and Rain. I love them both equally. I wonder how long some redditors have been listening to K-pop. For me, it's been 7 years and going strong. :D
In the future, you guys should add Korean dramas as a choice as a source of exposure for K-pop.

Hmm, okay. I had assumed that most people were exposed to dramas after listening to K-pop, so I hadn't considered that as an option. I'll keep that in mind for next time.

I think for future surveys you should change the phrasing of the sex/gender question to "Sex: Male/Female" or say "Are you: Male/Female" or "Man/Woman" or whatever. Male and female technically describe physical sexes, not identifiable genders, so I (and some others, I'm sure) can be a bit unsure what to answer when it's used with the word "gender." Even better would be to provide an "other" option. I'd be interested to see if the heteronormative tendencies of the kpop fandom extend to the question of gender identity.

You are so right, I figured that having gender as male or female would cover trans* people as well but I'm so sorry for not including genderqueer people. I've just added an 'Other' option to gender for everyone else. Sorry, I'm still learning about this stuff :x

I think "esports" would be a better indicator than "starcraft". I lot of people hear about kpop from other video games like League of Legends.

Yeah, you're right. I think I'll go back and edit that question now real quick. I forgot about how K-pop is infiltrating LoL as well.

Wait, just western or eastern Europe? I prefer to say I'm from Northern Europe.

Sorry, that was my bad, I should have included a Scandanavia option... so many people have already put it under 'other' that I'll just let you guys do that and go back and count it up later if you like

I'm surprised you have a ton of options for sexuality, but only 2 for gender. :P
Great survey either way! Spent forever trying to figure out who to pick as my favorite artist.

I'm really sorry, that's my mistake, I must have not included them accidentally :( as I said to another commenter, I'll go back and add up groups that were typed in the 'other' category.

The survey instantly made me feel old. It was my birthday earlier in the week, and that has pushed me into the 25-34 bracket.

JessiTee are you from teamliquid?

u/JessiTee Oct 21 '12
No, not at all - I don't play Starcraft. I've just heard of the KMD from people discussing it on the r/kpop IRC.
